I must have an affinity for sea Kaiju.Adding to my ever-growing gallery of favorite Toho monsters, Dagarla, or Dagarah, or however you like to call him, is another admired design. He, like Varan, gets very little love. Barely any vinyl figures exist of this guy, save for a few tiny, rare ones.
He's the best thing about "Rebirth of Mothra 2", which isn't saying much, but this bastard was loaded with offensive attributes, and had a pretty cool growl too.
One of the things that I wanted to do, was to play up the fact that he was created to eat pollution. I guess if it were Dagarla, not Godzilla, who would be the first to fight Hedorah, then that fight would be over quick. The only issue after is who's going to clean up all the Berem?

Funny that you added those Hedorahs in water form swimming near Daghara and the fact that he eats pollution. Do you think that Daghara is capable of.....eating Hedorah??

If he is, I'd hate to see the amount of Berem's he'd produce digesting Hedorah.
But seriously, I think it'd be easier for him to consume the small tadpole stage than taking on his huge final form.

Dagarla's design is one of those that looks great on paper, but winds up looking clunky and clumsy in a suit. That said, he looks quite impressive here, and nice connection between this guy and Hedorah! Kudos!

I agree, Dagarla gets alot of shit for being in a Rebirth of Mothra movie, but he is still a awesome kaiju. Plus, pitting him against Godzilla and Hedorah would be interesting.
Awesome artwork, by the way. I like how the Hedorah's are swimming away from a known pollution eater.

Ok, first off..that's just awesome! I mean, I would have never have thought of that. It makes a perfect and logical pairing!!! Poor little tadpoles doesn't stand a chance!
So the background looks good. It's a stock ship background, but it is so blurred and overtaken by the main characters...you barely even notice it. It's a good complimentary thing to include. It doesn't distract at all, dispite it not being a hand drawn element. With your drawing and coloring style, you can get away with that easy. I'm jealous lol. Your have such a good grunge like look. The shading and inking work so well with using some manipulated stock images. Really, it's a fantastic style.
As for the monsters, they both look fantastic. Dagarla looks just great here. He looks like he hunting and about to pounce on the poor little Hedorah. Maybe they will be like a school of fish and swarm together in one massive shoaling, in order to make them look bigger than they are and fool the reptile.....mmmmph.....
Of course I like the swarm drawing too. It's great to see that many Hedorahs. I mean the monster is often time just depicted in it's final form. So it is nice to see it not be the world destroying menace that everyone makes him out to be.

Hahaha! Thanks! I wanted a source for the Hedorahs to be there in the first place. That stock image of the boat is actually an old rusty oil tanker. So, you see the connection there!
I'm glad that my hand-drawn work blends fairly well with the various elements I include to create these. I can never tell if I make good decisions when it comes to how much is too much.

Well he does have my favorite monster theme. The music reminds me a little bit of Jaws, because it has that slow build up.
But yeah, with your style you can easily fit all those pieces together. I think it is cause of your color swatches. They are more earthy tones and they end up complimenting your stock images...rather than sticking out and seeming was too awkwardly juxtaposed against them. At least that is my opinion and theory of why I think it works.
Man your fast though. Not complaining mind you lol. It is great to see some fantastic Kaiju art like that whenever I go to this site. It just makes me feel like a turtle with my pace haha.

Like I said before - I'm an impatient artist. It's not that I like being fast, but I am such a "I-need-to-see-the-end-results-ASAP" person, that I sacrifice patience and attention to details. Don't feel bad about the pace you work in. The end result is always whats important.

I like Dagarla too, cool design, would love to see him fight Godzilla someday (especially since Mothra can't beat Dag without resorting to deus ex machina bullshit XD). I often thought Dagarla would be a rather tough foe for Hedorah to face, lol
