I couldn't help it... so here's a fox stack.(The link also has a list of the species from top to bottom).
7"x14" Watercolor, acrylic, and ink.

They are puffy, but they aren't big foxes!

This piece is absolutely gorgeous, though I personally would have placed a raccoon dog in the place of the grey fox.

As you can see from this phylogenetic graph, the raccoon dog fits right in with the "true foxes", whereas the grey fox is even further removed from them than the South American "false foxes" are.

I had considered it, but in the end I went with what people more consider to be 'fox', as opposed to going with pure taxonomic relationships - there's such a big and varied family of canines called 'foxes' it's more a common use term than a real family term. Raccoon dogs are awesome, though - I love them!

Thanks for the info. I do pay attention to the genus and species of the major inhabitants of the North American biomes; but I totally missed just how extensive the "fox" group is. This is delightful, as always.
