Saw-whet owl, gray and rufous morph screech owls, hawk owl, barn owl, barred owl, snowy owl, great grey owl, and eagle owl; birds of the order strigiformes!

Owls are my favorite birds, they are all absolutely amazing. I love listening to them call in the evening, and catching rare glimpses of them winging through the woods.

I was inspired to do these stacks because of harris hawks - who stack themselves naturally when hunting! The idea of stacked birds makes me happy, it's so silly and fun.

I agree, stacked birds are hilarious. The Jungle Book is a fine example.

Beautiful work! I love owls, too, especially the adorable screech owls. Also, I did not know that Harris Hawks stack themselves, but that's neat.

WHOA!!! I hope this isn't a dumb question, but is that really the order they go size-wise?!!? I thought Great Grays were the biggest but if there's seriously a horned owl out there that's this big, I'm going to shit my pants.

They are in correct order, size-wise - it's not a dumb question. The owl on the bottom is an eagle owl, the largest owl in the world - they get huge! Look them up online, they are gorgeous. Many have really striking deep orange eyes. There is some variation in different populations (and between male and female and largest to smallest within a range for a species) but I used average size to 'stack' them. Ironically that poor great grey is supporting a snowy owl - which despite being shorter overall length is about three times its weight. So size is taken into account, but not gravity.

WHOOOOAAAA.... Now THAT'S cool. Very fascinating to know as well. I've been delving into the "Owls of Ga'Hoole" book series and I'm completely fascinated by owls now. I was proud to recognize most of these, but thee's always more to learn! Very nice.

And thank you for explaining it to me so neatly

I work with a lot of Britain-native owls and have come to love them, too. Tawny owls are just so compliant (most of the time) when you're trying to help them. Barn owls have such a beautiful mystique and are fabulous for fund-raising as they are so well behaved on the glove and just pull the crowds in with their beauty. Unfortunately, both these species are far too commonly brought into the sanctuary because of RTC injuries.

Love the piece of artwork. Owls are one of those animals that are difficult to really capture well in a drawing but this is fabulous.
