Description
Named for its awe-inspiring bioluminescence, the searchlight ray is one of the largest sea-dwelling creatures. While initially it was not understood why a creature would benefit from making its presence known, it was later established that it uses its impressive array of lights to attract mates. To this end, males and females have slightly different colouring, with males leaning toward blue, and females leaning toward green. These giants are generally tolerant of other creatures, feeding on plankton and the occasional fish that is in the wrong place at the wrong time. During full moon, these rays often swim toward the surface. This is thought to be because the moonlight resembles the light of another ray, but is popularised by poets as the idea that the rays have a deep longing to fly out of the ocean and challenge the moon and stars for the most beautiful display of light.
