Description Yay, I managed to find myself some time to draw lately, so I got to finish my entry for =radioaktiveRaven 's contest much earlier than expected. ^^

The general idea of the contest was to draw one of her OC's interacting with one of our own. As you can see I chose Amnis (on the left), and Spirix (on the right).

Spirix lives in and near the sea, and is stronger at night, so I figured a nighttime underwater scene would be a great idea. Since Amnis is a sea creature as well, I thought the two would go great together (have you noticed? Amnis' trident and Spirix' horns are very similar, too).

Both characters are rather curious, too, even so far that it could get them into trouble. Here, they have found a glowy object near the ocean's surface, and both are eager to check it out. Whether it's safe or not is a different story, but it looks like they're both enjoying their discovery.

Just like in a real underwater scene, I made all light edges a bit glowy. I used to go scubadiving quite often, so I know what it looks like under water.

Used: black paper, coloured pencils (including white ones), white gel pen, Photoshop Elements 8.0 for finishing touches.

Heehee, seeing from the other entries I knew you were going to say that.

Managed to get it done before 2014, how awesome is that? xD

Anyway, I really wonder what kind of entries you're going to get. ^^

Glad you like the water too, it was quite a challenge to get it look like an underwater scene. ^^

Glad you think so! Perhaps it's because of the darkness that surrounds the characters and the faded lines?

silver-lati In reply to Foxofwonders [2013-12-17 20:17:13 +0000 UTC]

I suppose so, it gives off a nice effect, altough using it too much might cause some lines to become less visable, it's not in this piece, but from experience, it happens sometimes xD

Foxofwonders In reply to silver-lati [2013-12-17 20:38:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed, I usually dislike faded lines, but in this case it helped to make it more realistic and mysterious at the same time.

Do you know what I especially like in this work? It has a color scheme. You have used various shades of blue and of nearby hues, yet I can see the lines being really precise.

I think you have done a fantastic job Fox.

If you want an opinionated tip, you could apply shaded edges on more lines, maybe on the fins and scales of the characters. So that the edges would smoothly disappear by shades of color to transparency, or strongly reflect white or black on other edges.

Thank you

I'm afraid I don't really understand what you meant by the shaded edges though.

VisionCrow In reply to Foxofwonders [2013-12-16 17:05:54 +0000 UTC]

It's ok. I'll try to reword:

You could practice drawing two kinds of edges:

on where the sides of the edges disappear like a gradient
and on where the sides have have strong shade, both dark and light colors (you have done a lot of white already though )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Foxofwonders In reply to VisionCrow [2013-12-16 17:13:51 +0000 UTC]

So, you mean in the first case the edge wouldn't look like a line, but more like... an extreme of a certain shade?

I'm still not sure what you meant with the second one though. What did you mean by the dark colours? (Sorry if I sound dumb)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VisionCrow In reply to Foxofwonders [2013-12-16 17:21:08 +0000 UTC]

Not necessarily. It can and perhaps should still look as a line. The shades would accentuate the line, making it more pleasing for an eye. That would be my opinion.

About the dark colors, I originally meant to say "black" and "white" lines (which is great as a practice), but switched those to "dark" and "light" because a great shading can also be colored. Sorry, I was a bit confusing.

You could see it like this... if a light source, even if really small, would hit and disperse on a line, how would it look like? In your drawing, it's on the ball on the center, and I think you have drawn the lighting really well. How I saw is that the shading of lightning could continue further more on the characters, going all the way to the backs of the creatures. The light hitting all the details of the fins and scales. And then the last edges, on the back of the characters, would feature darker shades, which make these lines stand out strongly as well, but in a positively different way.
