Description An elaborate golden compass made of Celtic knotwork, with silver and copper metallic accents on the face and corners as well. Degrees are marked off from 10-90 in each quadrant. Around the compass, all four cardinal points are labeled in engraved Irish-Gaelic on brass plates, subpoints are labeled in Irish-Gaelic, and twelve elemental points as well: earth, storm, lightning, metal, air, sun, wind, wood, water, fire, spirit, stone. Also, subtle, decorative rune work is engraved on an inner ring.

This looks amazingly cool!
I'm going to use this as a reference for a school project if you don't mind.

Very impressive. The fact that you actually used Gaelic and not just runes or something adds to the quality.

Beautiful work with amazing details (even runes, for which my wife squees ). How big is the original and how long did it take you to make it? And wow, you posted it almost exactly one year ago.

Again, thanks so much for your wondrous comments, and squees are always appreciated!! The original, I believe, is 20x20. I drew the components by hand and then 'assembled' them all digitally in one piece. I'm not really sure how long it took to make it - I can never remember after they're done - LOL!

hugs,

Kristen

Do the runes actually say anything? She was having trouble translating them but we weren't sure if they'd have to be translated to Gaelic, since that's what the other writing is in.

[GEEK]It's actually the alphabet, or as close as one can get in the Elder Futhark, repeated as needed. "O" is the first letter to the right of North. "C" is replaced by Kenaz (K), "Q" by Ingwaz (NG), "V" by Wunjo (W), "W" by Ingwaz, "X" by Thurisaz, “Y” by Eihwaz (EI).[/GEEK]

The runes are mostly for look, if I remember correctly. The only thing I might have done is spelled something out using the sound equivalent in English (sounds like something I would have done - LOL) and then copied the phrase over until it was a circle.)

The Gaelic around the edge is definitely cool stuff though, like fire, lightning, storm, water, stone, etc.

Well, if you ever want to include runes in your artwork as actual words/messages, check with *PurpleGoddess , my wife. She's gotten pretty good at them. (She also does beaded jewelry, if you have any interest in that.)

:-D Thanks! The outside points are directions, and the inside words are gaelic for "earth, storm, lightning, metal, air, sun, wind, wood, water, fire, spirit, stone"

Gorgeous as always I really love the layering and nesting of knots and compass points. It has a lot of deapth and a lot to look at!

Oh wow that's lovely. And I like the incorporation of the elements. I didn't realize there were so many, is that a specifically celtic thing?

foxvox In reply to lennan [2006-12-08 22:28:22 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the elements was more just something I added for this piece. But it was based on old compasses that had things like the name of the north wind in Greek, and other not-necessarily directional stuff. I love the old thinking that did this sort of thing though!
