Do your windows look like this in winter?

Thank you for the compliment, my friend! You probably get more raindrops on your windows, right?

Weeellll, actually I have only one window and it's the glass sliding door to the outside of my apartment - a ground floor cementy fenced garden.

It's overhung by the balcony above my so the rain rarely hits it. I do have a great view of the rain rain rain rain rain rain all day everyday lately though!

Can you tell I'm getting a bit fed up with not seeing the sun properly for a while!??!!

I can tell! I see no sun all winter long, it seems. On the occasional very rare day, I wake up in the morning and wonder, "Why is my bedroom so yellow??"

LOL! I thought it wasn't that cloudy in Ontario in winter! But wait, I went to uni there for two years and it was pretty cloudy snowy and awful! LOL! That was in Kitchener-Waterloo.

It's similarly yucky here! My apartment also faces north, so it's already dark in here.

Mine faces south - it's one of its only redeeming graces! Well that and the fenced garden!

Oh, nice! So you get some sunshine indoors? Do you like sitting in your garden? Do you have flowers or other plants out there?

LeonieZurakowsky In reply to fractal1 [2012-03-09 05:12:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's one big sliding glass door type thingie. Sitting in the sun is fine for me if it's not too hot out. Pretty weird for me hitting peri-menopause and that all changed! LOL! It started way back when I was living in Thailand in my mid-40's and suddenly I couldn't stop sweating! ARG! I had been a complete sun worshipper my entire life until then - now I can tolerate a few minutes and it's been great on some of these lovely sunny days we've had in the past few weeks.

Green things pretty much all year around here in Vancouver so I can usually get some fresh herbs all year. Almost everything is in containers though - it's really just a few fenced feet but seems amazing to me and there are quite a few trees around too. Lora the cat loves to watch the massive bird population come and go!

How about you and your situation?

You have a little piece of heaven, Leonie! I suppose I do too, though a very little piece and with several problems attached. I have a ground floor patio which I fenced in for my cats. One one side, there's a tiny shady garden, maybe 6 feet by six feet. There are so many people everywhere, though, and cars too! Not everyone is considerate. Still, I always try to think positively and see the beauty around me. If I see past the cars, there are huge old trees that make a fantastic roaring sound in the wind! I can put flower pots on my balcony. There's quite a lot of sun for them there. I really do have much to be thankful for!

That sounds great! I'm totally thankful for my tiny little backyard which isn't more than about 6x6 or so well maybe a little bigger! LOL!

That would be the worse thing to lose if I have to move!

Same here! I would miss having a little patch of real ground. We can't grow perennials in pots because they'd freeze in the winter. I've planted all kinds of things in my little square: flowers, herbs, and even a miniature tree!

Aw that's sooo cool! I have a volunteer tree in a little wooden bed area - I'm pretty sure it's an elm, lol! I should look it up I suppose. It seeded itself quite a few years ago and I just let it go. I try to cut it back every year or so cuz it's grown past the 2nd floor now! I had some hostas and a few other very hardly flowers as well as Solomon's seal and a lot of herbs. Not sure the flowers are going to make it this year cuz it was pretty cold. Not sure I can afford to throw any money into it this year either! Maybe I'll seek cuttings like others in the neighbourhood - there is even a garden or two around here that says cuttings are ok! I think I have a few old seeds left too. Late last spring my son came and planted some few things which mostly didn't do well but it seems the cilantro is back after looking totally dead last summer! I've been eating chives and lamb's quarters which grow on their own every spring. Well the chives grow pretty much all year though they die down in fall.

The so-called backyard is really a kind of climatic microcosm with a lot of it sheer desert and another large part almost always in shadow due to the way the fence was built - figures eh? What bugs me most is that there are empty lots just sitting around here in a heavily populated area with few parks that could be used for gardens of which we always need more!

I've heard there's a guerrilla gardening society that appropriates this kind of wasted land once in a while...if I had the extra money and was willing to take the risk for trespassing, I might do it! I suppose one could even trace the owner if so inclined! LOL!

All this is so interesting! Guerilla gardeners! I'm amazed that there are people who say that cuttings are okay. That's vey nice of them! I love chives! Comparing my "yard" to yours, I see some similarities. My "desert" is the patio. It's very hot and dry and the only living things that love it are ants - lots of ants! Other than the patio, everything is in shade from trees, fences, and the building itself. I find it hard to discover plants that grow well in shade, but I've been increasing their number gradually over the years.

I was trying to get the dc_image plugin to work tonight. I did produce one nice-looking picture - along with many bad-looking ones! Are you familiar with this plugin? I'm not sure what to call my finished work. Although it was made in Apophysis, it's not a fractal. It isn't even really my art!

LeonieZurakowsky In reply to fractal1 [2012-03-10 07:12:18 +0000 UTC]

Looks like the ones I heard about have faded out! Dang! I googled a bit...

Ants love my garden too! There's no outdoor tap near my apartment so I run the hose from the kitchen sink (I don't advise this!)! In summer they seem to think it's an ant highway and use it as an express route to the kitchen! Usually a blog of vaseline or something on the hose stops most of that traffic but sheesh! They sting too!

I was in Apo before plug-ins so I don't know about any of them - link me please so I don't miss your art!

Your ant highway is quite something! Those ants are just way too smart!

You won't miss the picture, Leonie, since you're watching me. It may be a while before it's ready to post, in any case. It's funny, but less than a year ago I couldn't make any art myself and was always borrowing other people's. Now I still admire other people's art, but I don't want to borrow it at all. If what I make isn't 100% mine, I'm not happy with it. This is a change for the better, though one I'm not quite used to yet.
