Description I've been wanting to make an antler handled knife for a while but was always planning on making the blade myself, I finally decided to give it a go with a bought blade and if I liked it I'd start making the blades. I ended up not loving the premade blade and had to make a few changes to it, guess I need to start getting my supplies together and just make the entire thing myself next time. I will admit starting with a basic blank and just doing my own alterations to the metal did save me a ton of time.
I wanted a little something for the antler base and decided on a simple wolf paw print. almost inlayed a stone or a metal conch but I really like the simple sturdiness of it all. Maybe I'll do something more flashy on the next one.
It didn't take long to make but I liked carving on the antler and I am already doing a few other small projects using antler. Next comes the sheath, still deciding what style I want to make.
Finished with several coats of mineral oil.

Really 'Eye catching '. I like everything about this work ! I like the forward tilt to the ricasso and that small fuller, stops just in the right place ,going to the tip of the blade, to my eye at least ! Can't wait to see the sheath !Β Β  By the way ..That 'File to knife' was interesting ...So thanks for that !

Nice bit of work!

If you carefully brush the antler with the flame of a torch, you can bring out browns and yellows in the material. Just be careful.Β

Exceptional work and the blank looks to have worked out well even though you personally find it to be less than desirable. Β  Wanting to make your own blades, I'd say that comes from being appreciative of your own skills.Β Β Β

I ended up liking the blank, I just had to reshape it a bit. But it's good steel and saved me TONS of time in shaping, firing and hardening.
Really I want to make my own blade because it's something I haven't done yet. I'm always looking for a new skill or something new to learn. If you look at my gallery there isn't a lot of repetition. I try something till I have a handle on it then move on to something else and what I learned before helps in so many other areas on later projects.
Thanks for the comments.

My ex-father in-law was a cop who made custom blades from old bastard cut files he bought at the flea markets. Β His work was extraordinary using just a table grinder he could shape a blade with multiple angles and his knowledge of treating the steel to assure maximum strength with just the right amount of temper produced a piece that garnered a three year waiting list of clients. Β Some of the most beautiful hand made works I've ever seen. Β And I've said nothing about the bolster and the grips often made with exotic wood or antler. Β I've thought of attempting one myself but need a work-space I no longer have, renting a trailer looking for a house with a garage to allow me to get my shop set up for expanding my hobbies.Β

Old files are fantastic for that, but you can't use modern ones. Old ones were made with good carbon steel and modern ones are just cast and molded. Only the very outer layer are good steel the rest is cheap filler.

I found an instructable on how to do what we were talking about, it even has a section on how to tell if the file is good enough metal to make a knife with. All I ask is if you actually do it send me a few pics.

Hope it helps.

Wow, thanks for the link. Β If I get my adult play-pen (Shop) I'll definitely give making a custom knife a shot and I'll be sure to keep you in the loop.
