Description
Reverse MacroSome people have never even heard about this technique. Others know what it is, but don't know how to do it. I made this tutorial this afternoon in hopes to answer any questions.
Hope it helps!
[edit]
For maximum magnification, use your minimum focal length (i.e. 18mm, if your lens is 18-55mm). Incredible results!
You can also pick up something called a "reversin ring" to make shooting a whole lot easier! Basically a filter that screws onto the end of your lens and allows you to mount it to your camera body [link] Super cheap and it makes things much easier

Thank you so much for filling me in, whenever you mentioned it on your photos I was always like "What the heck is this reverse macro thingy?"
Now I know.

Sorry to hear that
I would keep experimenting though. From what I've seen online, there are ways to overcome that.

AHAHAH I thought I need a 50mm and some adapters to do this!
If you only need to do that, I am going to do it right away!
Thanks so much for that! My D60 doesnt have a DOF preview button...
Anyways, what focal lenght did you used? And what focus? infinity or macro?

FramedByNature In reply to AndrePais [2009-08-11 19:35:54 +0000 UTC]
Usually, I end up using something mid-range (like 28mm) since that's the point at which the lens is physically shortest (I grasp it against the cam body pretty tightly).
Had to go do a little experimenting to answer your question I found that macro focus and minimal focal length will get you the closest

AndrePais In reply to FramedByNature [2009-08-11 20:37:02 +0000 UTC]
Yup! And at 18mm the last element is more retracted to the lens barrel itself! Rear Lens hood!
I tried and it worked perfectly! The view gets a bit dark and I need exposures around 1 to 2 seconds to have a well exposed shot...
I think there are some adapters that mount between the camera body and the filter circle of the lens...
I'll search for them!
With Luck I might not need a macro lens anymore!

Thanks a bunch. I actually knew how this worked before (because after you said you used that technique, I obviously had to google it... )
The bonus tip is very new to me though... I have to try this later. ^^ Is there any specific way you have to set your focus/zoom before you flip the lens to get better results?

FramedByNature In reply to Theme3 [2009-08-11 19:20:18 +0000 UTC]
No problem!
I don't do anything specific before flipping it. Focal length usually ends up being mid-range since that's when the lens is physically the shortest (due to bracing it against the body). Experimentation is recommended though

Hey man! I tried it out and took this picture: [link]
I must say the technique works pretty damn good O.o
But that bonus trick of yours didn't work with my cam (Canon EOS 400D). When the lens was detached it just set the aperture to F.00... Weird stuff, but I'm still satisfied.
I found out that when my lens is shortest it's halfway zoomed in so I had to stick my index finger between to keep the zoom at it's minimum to get a good shot though.
Thanks a lot for the guide

Don't trust what it says. It'll still saf "f00" but the aperture has changed.
Take a more stationary subject and set it on the table. Take some shots at different apertures and see what you get

I tried it today, but i found out, that when you take the lense of my camera, it doesnt let you take any pictures and displays on the screen "LENS NOT ATTATCHED" >_> do you have any hints on how i can fool it?

Mmm I'm really not sure, I haven't encountered that problem. Definitely research it. There's gotta be some way around it...

Make sure you've got a good subject. Moreover, make sure the subject is actually in frame. It can be tough to spot due to the shallow depth

Hey, I've got a question: I tried this, but the aperture number read 00, no focus at all... So is this trick for more recent camera models? (I have the oldest of the Rebel cameras)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
FramedByNature In reply to AzureEcho [2009-08-18 21:59:28 +0000 UTC]
Should still work.
The aperture reads 00 no matter what, even on mine. When trying to find the focus, take a small stationary object (like a coin) and slide the camera closer until you see it come into focus

Ah, I see! It works perfectly fine, just a bit tricky, especially when (trying to) shooting butterflies and the likes
