Description Since the majority of you wanted to know how i create my macro photos without a macro lens i wrote a small information I personally love these filters and took all my macro photos with them.
With this "tutorial" i mainly want to make those filters more know since apparently almost nobody knows them.

I noticed the aperature in this text and here is one example :
I had to use a F-stop of 9 which is a really small aperature but it was necessary to get the whole drop n focus Just so you can see what i meant.

Here are some more information about closeup filter by *Ratabago :
Shallow depth of field is one of the big problems with any form of macro photography. And the closer you get to the subject the narrower the field of acceptably sharp focus becomes. At 50% magnification I'm often shooting at F/8.0 to F/11.0. At 100%, where the front of my lens is only 14cm from my subject, I'm often shooting at F/13.0 to F/16.0. At these apertures available light starts to be a problem, and an off camera flash or a reflector of some sort can be very useful.

There are a few problems to watch for with macro filters. They tend to soften the image towards the corners, and also often vignette. That square cropping you do helps a lot with these two problems. Macro filters also increase chromatic aberration (which tends to make the image less sharp), particularly if there is a strong light source. Stacking cheap filters makes all these problems much worse, especially chromatic aberration.

And here are some other photos i took with those closeup lenses/ filter :

Hi. I have a question... (It might be stupid but well... I can't find the answer anywhere.) What will happen If I use macro filter with macro lens. Is everything will be ok ? I don't want to spend my money on something that won't work.

I hate to ask a derpy question, but I also have four of these lenses (+1, +2, +4, and +10) and I can't seem to get my camera to focus at close range (I tried taking a picture of a nice and smooth rock I laid out in some nice light). It wouldn't focus, even with me adjusting the aperture and f-stop. Any ideas on how to help? I'm not sure if this is a stupid/easy question or not, just wanted to ask. XD Very nice tutorial, though, and your pictures are gorgeous. <3

I read this tutorial some months ago and I didn't know about these filters at all! I've bought them today, after long searching (nobody sells them here and they costed 50 euros), and I can't wait to try them, they seem great! (however I have just +1, +2 and +4, not the +10, but still )

Will these work with eos 550 d ? I am sorry the question might seem silly but I love macro photos and buying a lens is too expensive

I just bought a set of those close-up filters after reading this, can't wait to try this now! ... 25$ was less expensive than 800$ macro lens I was drooling about XD (although I still intend to buy it, but it will wait for xmas now ^^)

Thanks for all those precious informations!

of course the can't be compared to a 800$ Makro lens but for the money they are amazing !

For macro pictures I just flip the lens around with the face of the lens on the body, it's a bit tougher to do since it's a lot more manual process since there is no auto-focus but it works great.

Kara-a In reply to RTM16 [2012-08-06 09:14:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes this is the reverse lens technique, this is also a way to take makro photos

MouseMakesMess [2012-08-02 13:45:36 +0000 UTC]

I have some close-ups filters that I got before I bought my extension tubes and the results are nice, although with close-up filters the quality can suffer (but only a negligible amount).

I prefer my extension tubes because I find them more versatile. They're less expensive than a macro lens (they cost about £100) but more expensive than close-up filters! I might actually try using my extension tubes and close-up filters together!

Kara-a In reply to MouseMakesMess [2012-08-02 19:16:44 +0000 UTC]

I also thought about buying extension tubes but for now i am happy with those closeup filters
If that works you should be able to get REALLY close

No big mistakes. A couple of small ones, but they don't damage the message. "Write a short information" is a peculiar way to put it, but the meaning is still quite clear. Creat should be spelled create. Again, not a big problem. This is a nice introduction to macro filters.

Macro filters also increase chromatic aberration (which tends to make the image less sharp), particularly if there is a strong light source. Stacking cheap filters makes all these problems much worse, especially chromatic aberration. That's probably why you don't like the results when you stack your filters.

not always, if you have a good set. It makes them a bit more tricky to use but it can be done.

Kara-a In reply to Grimalur [2012-07-29 09:33:17 +0000 UTC]

yes that's true but mine were quite cheap so it doesn't work to well for me and most of the time the +10 closeup lens is more than enough. ^^

Awesome thank you for the info!!
I was just looking into them and unfortunately everywhere i live they are 150 - 250 bucks each, but i am going to get one anyway, as i too am a broke student/artist. This information is excellent and so is your work!!

I am so pleased to read this. Thank you for taking the time to submit this for the rest of us! I have admired your work and wondered to myself what exactly you use. I highly enjoy macro photography but I feel like the two lenses I have just don't cut it for getting close up.

You are very welcome !
well..what lenses do you use? I don't know how good the closeup lenses work for zoom lenses ~
but you should own the kit lens, right? At least with this lens you can get really close and i am sure that you will creat wonderful photos !

moonstruckbyshadow In reply to Kara-a [2012-07-28 17:30:49 +0000 UTC]

I have the kit lens 18-55mm IS and then I have a 55-250mm with IS. I'm a college student with no real art background and limited funds so I could use suggestions and pointers to work with what I've got.

Kara-a In reply to moonstruckbyshadow [2012-07-28 17:45:34 +0000 UTC]

same here...i am a student and don't have the money to buy a expensive macro lens
You can absolutley buy the closeup filters since they will work well with the 18-55mm Kit lens ( I use the same lens for all my macro photos )....for the other lens you just have to try out if it will work or not.
