Description
Skeletal reconstruction of the recently described (2010), short-armed dromaeosaurid Tianyuraptor ostromi. I started as usual, by tracing the individual bones from photographs of the speciemen, then rearranged, decompacted, and reassembled them into life position. The skull in particular is blown apart, so I did the best I could using the available resources, but it is likely to change when further information is made available. Unlike other Liaoning dromaeosaurids (microraptorines), Tianyuraptor had very short arms and some features that might unite it with Gondwanan unenlagiines. It's either a basal microraptorine, a basal unenelagiine, or basal to all other dromaeosaurids more derived than microraptorines. A unique addition to the family regardless.Related content

I really like the spiky feathers on your raptor reconstructions. I often see flightless raptors with way-too-sleek, smooth, aerodynamic feathers.

Thanks. I look to kiwis, cassowaries, ostriches and other ground birds for ideas and see that they're much shaggier and fuzzier than many people would assume. I try to stylize that in my reconstructions a bit.
