Description Morning on the seasonally dry lake where a Troodon nesting colony is situated in what will become northwestern Montana. A male Troodon tends to his clutch as newly hatched chicks stay close. It's been hypothesized that males tended the nests like modern ratites since a skeleton collected in situ on a nest showed no evidence of calcium depletion during shell formation. The lake will expand during the rainy season and flood this shallow flat, but for now it is dry with wasps and other insects burrowing into the limey mud in which the dinosaurs construct their nests. The nest rim is based on the famous specimen partially collected at Egg Mountain, just outside of Choteau, Montana. A great place to visit and to see grizzly bears where they still come out onto the plains to eat berries. Thanks for looking!

Actually research suggests Troodons didn't take care of their young; neither did most paravians: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/ab…

The Two Medicine environment seems to be quite a popular nesting site, with Maiasaura, Hypacrosaurus, and Troodon all laying eggs there. I wonder why that would be?

Probably because it combined well-drained, non-acidic soils, rivers with stable banks, and plenty of cover. It might just be that nests are better preserved in these rocks than in more acidic soils and the tops of sandbars too.

That is amazing! I was nuts about dinosaurs when I was a kid, and I still do find them quite interesting The terrain is very well done too!

Very cool. I especially like the juveniles scurrying around between their likely father.
