Ok, not sure if this is the right category, but I can't find one for "virtual art" so I figured 3d art>sci-fi and futuristic was about as close as possible...what this is... well, on SecondLife, there are working Stargates, but they look like regular stargates from the movie/TV show... but the creator of one type of them (there are four competing ones) allows people to modify his brand of gate with new textures or themes... so I made this special texture set... it is a stargate if the Borg (from Star Trek) had stargates... the dialing ring features borg characters and its done in an evil greenish color scheme, and I made an animated "Iris" object that looks like the plasma thing in a borg regeneration alcove.
Ok, so its not all that great, and maybe not really art, but I wanted to post some stuff that I have made for SL... I'll probably post pics of my other gate themes too in the near future.

hmm, I'm not sure if it would actually be available right now, I have not been on SL much myself, and no longer have a home there, and therefore my Magic Boxes are not rezzed so nothing in my Store on XL Street (or whatever it's being called now) is available

hmmm, his name on Second Life is Doran Zjemla I think, I may have spelled it wrong.
You can find it free on Second Life by searching for OpenGate, that is if you have a Second Life account.

cool! The OpenGates are free and can be set up on any land you own or allowed to rez on, I believe there is a website where you can look up all the other working gates... should be included in the help files

cool. I got a few gates myself, but I don't know if I have OpenGates, I'll have to look later today. Can the opengate be found on the marketplace? Or do I have to go to the sim? If you can, maybe you can send a copy to my accont. I'm riru Alex, spelled just like that.

I think you should be able to find it on the marketplace, or probably if its not there just search for OpenGate and I'm sure you'll find links to it

When my class is done, I'll get on and find it. Then I will make a stargate made of wood and try to see if I can put it on one of the sims I go to.

Ah, so you're the one that made that particular SL Stargate variant.
It may just be me, but it seems like it'd make a whole lot more sense to have the event horizon texture look like a Borg transwarp portal. Other than that, it's frigging awesome.

well, its not the SL bandwidth issue, its because I'm on a spotty wireless connection... I need to upgrade my wireless adapter to N band... as soon as I can afford to...

I wish I could afford cable for myself... but I'm leaching wireless from my bro-in-law, who has cable... but I'm close to 300 meters from the router, just about on the effective edge of the signal... so it likes to cut out constantly.

I just think it isn't really a "game screenshot" in the way dA meant it... its not like I copied something someone else made from a game, I made the textures for that stargate myself, so it really IS my art...

not really... I made a Borg inspired cover plate for the standard SecondLife OpenGate DHD... it was just a cover that covered the normal DHD.
Not sure if I have the teture for the normal DHD or not, Ill have to search my hard drives...
I can't get a good enough connection to log in to SecondLife right now, so if I don't have the texture, I won't be able to get another copy... But I'll see if I can find one.

Ofcourse, the borg plasma regeneration thingies are just electric disk things that anyone can get at Spencer's Gifts. They pop up in sci-fi shows every so often, and every single time, I shake my head at the screen and wonder just who the props people think they're fooling.

I suppose to some degree at least, I can take some credit... as i said in the comment on the egyptian one, it takes a ton of intricate wirk to put the symbols on the dialing ring... the original symbols are from the movie/TV show, and were done by someone else, but to replace them with borg or egyptian or any other characters is a tedious process in Photoshop, because you have to typew in each character seperately, rotate and position it... and then, if you want to add any effects to just the characters, you have to create a new layer above the backgreound, and merge all 30 some character layers down to that new layer, and finally, add the effects, and you can't use text effects because PS doesn't call it text anymore...
But for the Borg one at least, I didn't really change the other textures except to make them a bit darker and give them a bit of a greenish tint.
I don't know... I wouldn't really call it art, but I guess i deserve a little credit for the sheer amount of work.
