I look after my 92 year old mother and can relate to how the care taker feels. In the beginning I was a little resentful having to care for Mom. I never SAID it, but inside I felt it.

Now, it is a time of relative peace and it gives her such pleasure to feel the warm water on her bones, that it is almost a privilege to care for her in her last years. To give back for all she did for us. To make up for all the struggles we had during my youth.

This Grandfather's face is one of a man who knows he is safe and loved. The love he glows brought tears to my eyes. He looks to be a gentle soul.

As for the caretaker, that big brawny muscle-bound tattooed punk, the look on his face, the task he is performing show that all that ink is just something to hide behind perhaps to protect his softer essence from the harsh world he deals with.

He is, at heart, a caring loving grandson not the street hood many would judge him as being.

I don't comment on photos very often, but this one touches my heart as much as some of the work of the older camera artists for LOOK magazine, the quality and the emotions evoked are just that high.

Thank you very much for adding this to my day.

It's hilarious, because maybe 20-30 somethin' years ago it was the other way around. That's an emotional shot.

I think that has to be the sweetest picture I have ever seen and I know that the younger man must be a very good person because I can't think of many people that would do that for their elderly relatives. Simply beautiful!

this is beautiful you can tell that despite w/e ailments he has, he's happy and loved; and thats all that should matter when it comes to our older generation i've taken care of my great grandmother for the past 6 yrs, knowing that i've saved her an end in a nursing home and miserable is enough to keep me going, and my son enough to keep HER going She will be 90 in October, and i'm asked almost daily why i do this, or told i've thrown my life away... there really isnt a response to either, i love her too much to abandon her, and i dont consider my life wasted at all it's the way things are; our elderly spend their whole lives caring for their family, the least we can do is return the favor with love when it comes back around

This is so lovely. I used to work in a nursing home, and I can say that it certainly takes a special kind of love and determination to look after those who have trouble looking after themselves -- very rewarding in many ways for both parties involved. The elderly gent's smile upon his grandson tells me all I need to know about their relationship.

Congrats on the very well-deserved DD!

While not a technically brilliant photo, I think it still does what photography should do - capture a window into life, and connect with the viewer. And it's clearly connected with many viewers.

It's a beautiful moment, and one not many people would have the balls to post to the public.

this, whilst not being technical brilliant in any way, does what a photo should do, it tells a story and gives us a brief but informative glance into someone else life, and i think the subject of this is one that most people can relate to in some way or other. its this quality that i feel is lacking from a lot of photographs.
thanks for posting this.

I agree that that's what most photographs lack these days,. They don't tell stories any more but rather work to impress and be pretty. So yeah... I agree 100% with your comment.

Wow. It's nice to see a tough looking guy that that one paying such great respect to his grandfather by bathing him! It's sad and scary that the elderly are easily neglected or forgotten... because one day, we will all be there. I can only hope there's someone who will be there to take care of me.
Congrats on the DD!

I once had to help put my grandmother a new diaper on, when she was far much too gone to care about me (or anyone) seeing her that way. It was very hard.

This picture shows nothing but gentleness and love and even fun. Only thing that disturbs me slightly are the clinical gloves. But for the rest it's a emotional piece with a lot of deeper meaning behind, without loosing the 'grace' or 'dignity' of the old man.

This was rather heart warming. Especially after reading why it was chosen. I lost someone to cancer about 6 years ago and he looked a lot like the man in the tub. By the time my uncle passed away he was about 68 pounds. Only 48 years old.

Anyways, it's a HUGE act of loving kindness to bath a person you love in such a state. You really have to have the mental courage to do so. God Bless!

Kaz-D [2010-05-15 20:09:15 +0000 UTC]

I actually think that this is totally deserving of a daily deviation - I do of most of the pieces featured - but this in particular because of the fantastic display of laughter and just general trust and safety that the man in the tub has placed in the man caring for him. We don't know it because often people we care for can't say it - but it takes alot for them to trust us and despite them not being 'all there' mentally it's quite obvious that many of them feel immense fear. I know I would should I be in this situation - aswell as all the other multitude of feelings that will come raining down in the duration.

This shot depicts a very warm scene - whether the man is embarassed or not at having his picture taken - the light in his eyes and the smile on his face is certainly genuine. And content aside - the technicalities of this are wonderful - Very warm and colourful - love the casualness of it aswell. And great job for wearing gloves - most of the carers I work with need serious poking to do so

Congratulations Well deserved
