Description
KM - 'General Winter fighting alongside Canada'The Battle of Quebec in 1775, in which American soldiers and the Canadian regiment they'd raised attempted to take on the larger and much more warmly dressed Canadian militia and British regulars during a snowstorm. Undeterred by the subsequent massacre, they then tried to siege the town while a General Winter and Smallpox tagteam made its rounds through the camps. Yep, that probably wasn't a good idea.
Headcanon says Canada would be physically around 13-14 at the time. He's wearing a mix between the Quebec militia uniform, the regular's cap and torque, and a makeshift cloak many of the really ill-equipped American fighters (and their Canadian supporters) had to resort to wearing. Talk about conflicted.
It made no sense for General Winter to wear a Russian uniform that won't exist for another half a century or so, so he gets a British grenadier's uniform. You do not screw with someone wearing a foot-tall bearskin cap.
EDIT: The process steps can now be found here for the curious.

I agree, but by then I just wanted to be done and over with this. The research took out my energy quota OTL
It's rare to see fanwork of General Winter not with Russia, so I thought I'd do my part XD

The coloring here is fantastic. I love the blue tones and how they set both the darkness of the nighttime, and the coldness of winter all at once. It's such a beautiful job. The darkness and light is a wonderful mix seeing as the only light is coming from General Winter. Hello, the reason why white is the color of death.
Maybe I'm just too much of a fan of General Winter helping people out in various wars. It always surprises me that people seem to forget about the winter even if they are from climates where it gets massively cold (Hi, Sweden. What's this, you say? Invasion of Russia is in your travel plans this evening? Oh, Russia, you think Finland is a nice place to visit in the middle of the worst winter of the century. Well, um, good for you?).
Also thanks for the historical note. While I'm getting better with my early North American history, it still tends to stick to the colonies, rather than explore Canadian history. Lovely to see your age head cannon. Given the timing, and the need for defense, Canada probably would have aged quite a bit for this experience.

Oh hi, fancy seeing you here. I'm celadonite on LJ. Very glad you like it! I'd thought having General Winter in pure white rather than the canon dark colours would add an unearthly and frosty look to the mood. Someone pointed out the (entirely unintentional) similarities with the Quebec flag.
The fun thing about this battle is that the rebels had already lost about half their men trekking through the wilderness to even get there. The battle itself had them beaten to the tune of a 25:1 loss ratio, including two of their leaders. Mother Nature sure wasn't on their side. (I know right? Especially with Russia sending ill-equipped soldiers from the south, many of whom probably had never seen snow before. What were they thinking? Were they thinking at all?)
Glad you found the notes useful, this battle didn't seem to be very well-known. Age headcanon-wise, I was partially inspired by that heartbreaking doujinshi where Canada went from having the body of a child at the brink of the revolution to that of a young man to deal with America's invasion. I personally think he'd physically come of age only after Balfour or in the trenches of WW1 though.
Thanks for your comment!

Ooh! I'm happy to have found you (and I feel very silly for not recognizing your style. I do shyly stalk the people who comment on me, and I know I went through the fan art that you posted on LJ). The similarities to the flag might have been more obvious if you had done frost ferns or the like. As is, General Winter might as well be representing the Scots for his color combination plus his tendency toward the diagonal, lol. Still, that was really fortuitous that you got the flag colors without meaning to.
I actually know a little bit about the trek (I think. It sounds suspiciously close to a poem we read in elementary school about a farmer from Connecticut who refused to listen to the sage advice of a woman and ended up trudging both to and from Canada, always defeated). I'm from the mountains that constitute some of that wilderness. This would have gone differently if the American troops hasn't been so keen to see the Vermonters return to New York. Obviously. Anyway, you know what I love that I missed before thanks to changing screen sizes? The fact that the blue coat hasn't shaved for nearly a week. His frozen stubble is a beautiful testament to how much it sucks to fight Canadians.
To be fair, it does snow in the Ukraine (Poor Ukrainian farm boys made up most of the Soviet troops in the initial assaults, according to Finnish sources I've read). -40 degrees C without wind chill, however, is a little harsh.
Finland and Russia: It's so warm!
Personally, it's not the initial decision that seems bone headed to me. It is the repeated decision to continue invading with more troops from the south after the second week of -40 that has me scratching my head. And the subsequent execution of the Generals who were not winning the war on that strategy. A no-prze if you can guess whose strategy it was.
I have headcannon that states he went into WW1 at around 17~18 but had already aged to 25 by the end of the Somme. My real question is what age was he when the Boer War broke out, because England drafted pretty much everyone to fight the Dutch, and some of the crap that went down would definitely have matured /Matthew/, but I am not certain that it would have had much of an effect on the nation.

You know, I was sorely tempted to have Pixiv!Scotland as one of the Royal Highland Emigrants sniping from a window in the background. If you didn't know already, yes, they fought in that battle. (oh man, you looked at those XD? And well, it's not as if the vast majority of my Hetalia art is posted on my LJ)
So you're from around Maine? And you're the first one to notice the frozen stubble The bluecoat was originally supposed to be Alfred himself, but given how many Canadians were fighting on the Americans' side, having a random soldier instead would have been better imo.
And purging the previous military higher-ups before the invasion sure helped too OTL
Do they ever state Matthew's age? (But really, I personally think it would make more sense for England and France to be middle-aged) My own headcanon has physical age determined by a mix of economical/military/political/cultural development and national identity, so Matthew only hits the 19-20 mark in the 80s with his full independence. Finland probably stayed in his mid-late teens until the Romantic Nationalism movement as a Grand Duchy imo.

If someone gives me a link to their profile it's rude not to check it out, right? XD. I actually loved your abilities with colors. I'm so akwardly novicey about it. I don't really know any of your other fandoms, though, and so I didn't know how to comment. 'Rar, rar, I <3 how you color, keep it up!' isn't a very useful comment
Further west, but yeah, I am made of New England! *Poses with maple syrup* I will take on the world in the name of rocks, forests, snow, and more rocks!
I really like little details. The more twiddly bits that I can exclaim over, the happier I am. And I like it better as a human, but mainly because I like pictures showing that nations interact (sometimes in bloody and violent ways) with humans on occasion.
Oh, Stalin. You silly goose.
I would tack onto this statement 'personal self image' stuff. Mainly because if we just went by 'economical/military/political/cultural development and national identity' the Nordics would all be old men, sitting back and chatting over a game of backgammon. Not that it's an unrealistic interpretation of the countries, but it's not cannon.
By the 1600s I would put Finland at 21, myself. Certainly by the time Gustavus Adolphus reformats the military. His creation of the (and I'm going to spell it wrong OTL) Hakkapelliaat cavalry was a huge boost along the lines of a purely Finnish identity. Also, we have to remember that until 1918 most countries did not work on the current nation model that we have today. The concept of fealty to a sovereign was around for a longer time than nationhood. For Finland, the Finns were Finns who had sworn allegiance to the Swedish king. So they had a lot of the national identity thing down, and the Swedes expected the Finns to pull their weight like any other section of the Swedish nation, unlike South Italy and Spain's relationship, which had clear aspects of paternalism about it.
Yar. Anyway, I also think that the age has a lot to do with the individual personality of the nation involved. It's an x-factor that really can't be accounted for. In cannon, for example, I find England looks like a stressed out late twenties, or a normal mid thirties, while France seems to look about youthful enough for l'amour de la une nuit stand, but also seems to carry his age and experience more than England. I think this is because just personality wise, England has an immaturity streak a mile deep, which would fit with him looking generally younger than France.
But, honestly, age with nations is kinda inconsequential. Unless you're Sealand.

Tell me about it. Whenever I'd wanted to comment on Eight Men, all that came out was 'I like your writing \o/, derpderp'.
So erm, New Hampshire or Vermont then XD? I've never really gotten around trying good maple syrup, come to think of it.
The same goes with drawing the little details too. One of my WIPs has a troublesome military uniform in it, but it's pretty satisfying to see all the small details come together.
Hm, haven't really thought it that way. But wasn't the Finnish language and literature (and 'high culture' in general) relatively underdeveloped before then? Wouldn't that counted for something? Then again, I doubt Hetalia's author was expecting his series to be thought about deeply when he made those profiles. I remember seeing fic of nations reverting to a younger age to reflect their people's new mindset.
Poor Sealand, nobody takes him seriously.

Then I would call you my Denmark - King of Derp!
YOU ACTUALLY KNOW WHICH STATES ARE ON THE CANADIAN BORDER?!
You should have a real maple experience. Yes. Especially someone cool enough to know that Vermont is not the capital of New Hampshire or (and this one is my favorite 'so where is New England?' mistakes) the capital of Montreal. Americans know their geogramaphy
Oh military clothes. Why is the ranking system so weird for every uniform system? I look forward to the finished product.
True about Finnish art, since it was Swedish art at the time. It isn't that Finnish people didn't produce art, but it was considered a subset of Swedish art. However, I don't necessarily believe that the development of high culture is an act of maturity. I like the idea, but, Germany's great flourishing of high culture started happened after the Thirty Years' War, when militarily, and geographically, and by pretty much every measure, 'Germany'* was spending its time trying not to get completely wiped off the map, rather than doing anything that would count as growing. Really, 'Germany's' philosophical development was a century ahead of its growth. Italy, too, should have grown mightily during the Renaissance, and we all love our Chibitalia, don't we? XD
*and I'm using 'Germany' in quotes because on maps, it was still the HRE, but the reality was that the area of central Europe was just a mess, and had broken into unofficially independent, but definitely Germanic kingdoms and principalities. Yay for the Thirty Years' War!
Maybe if he didn't end every sentence with 'desyo!' ;D

Do I get a silly tiny hat and a giant axe?
Well, I spent a semester in Amherst (that was interesting, the bank clerk there asked if they rode bicycles on the highways back home. I'm from Hong Kong) and I've been living in Ontario for the past three years now, so I figured some basic geography was in order as a courtesy. But man, Americans not knowing their own country is kinda sad.
It's fortunate that getting the rank right isn't important in this case (given the theme, the character could be left unranked or with some inaccuracies too), but dear god why do they have to have so many different variations for the same military force?
Ah, that's true too. I was surprised to see Italy so tiny during the Renaissance, but then remembered that it wasn't unified yet. I'm guessing there are a bunch of factors determining age.
*German history was pretty much "It was a total mess, even by European history standards" XD I'm wondering how canon is going to tackle it, now that it's hinted in the teasers.
