Description The new blog entry about the violin in America’s storage room reminded me of my musical headcanon for Hetalia characters.

Canada was taught the fiddle by Scotland, who had been sent to help defend him from America’s invasion, during the siege of Quebec. In a fit of passive-aggression, he probably played the British anthem near the city gates for the American troops. A few years later, his playing technique nearly gave France and Austria conniptions the first time they heard it, much to England’s delight. Canada’s sucky posture here was entirely intentional, I swear.

In modern times, Scotland still meets up to jam a bit occasionally, with Canada’s creativity and flamboyancy being directly proportional to the amount of alcohol ingested.

I meant to wait for an official Scotland design before drawing this, but screw it. He's dressed as a member of the Royal Highland Emigrants, and yes, they did wear kilts in the Canadian winter, because they were badass like that. Canada's in his Quebec militia uniform, minus the coat and hat.

Thank you! And yes, picking up an instrument is definitely something everyone should try if they get the chance to.

I feel like Scotland is telling this to Canada in this picture . . .
Scotland: "Practise until you get it right and then practise until you can never get it wrong,"
[[A free llama badge to whoever can tell me that reference]]

You mean "Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong," ? Right? Because that's a quote that nobody knows where is came from... But the quote, "Practice makes perfect," comes from it. :3

Wow! Somebody actually replied to that after a year . . . just wow.
Actually, the line that I quoted comes from a particular animated show. Ik, I gave away a hint, but it's been a while since anyone had commented me on that.

Conniptions... excellent use of the word XD For some reason this picture reminds me, did you know that the bagpipes were the only musical instrument to be banned? It was forbidden in Scotland when England took over because of its use as a tool of war for the very reasons you described Lovely picture, love the French Canadian style of playing myself with the stomp boards and tap shoes... Just so much win in this!

freefallcrash In reply to EhCanuck [2012-01-12 04:33:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I didn't know that, no wonder why there were so many bagpipes being played at the Highland Games XD And glad you like this! I only know the French Canadian-styled fiddle playing through Le vent du nord, but what little I've heard was lovely.

EhCanuck In reply to freefallcrash [2012-01-12 04:53:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah in Scotland bagpipes were used like the snare drum was to organize the army, give orders and inspire fighters. I think the ban became a bit of a source of pride really
La Bottine Souriante, André Brunet, Jean-François Branchaud do some nice stuff, they're fairly traditional in their playing. I also like J. O. LaMadeleine and Jean Carignan is a bit of a legend really (had over 7000 songs in his repertoire my tante told me when she introduced me to his music) The east coast stuff is great too, I'd recommend Leahy, Rankin Family, Nellie MacMaster and Ashley MacIssac.

And I suppose the ban would had encouraged even more underground playing too XD

Yay for Uncle Scotland. :3 I love this so much. I've always thought that Scotland was the one that taught Canada many things. I mean, a lot of what Canada is today is based on Scotland's involvement. * I got a book called 'How the Scots invented Canada' * Scotland is so much love. Why isn't he in Hetalia yet!?
