Description
The new blog entry about the violin in America’s storage room reminded me of my musical headcanon for Hetalia characters.Canada was taught the fiddle by Scotland, who had been sent to help defend him from America’s invasion, during the siege of Quebec. In a fit of passive-aggression, he probably played the British anthem near the city gates for the American troops. A few years later, his playing technique nearly gave France and Austria conniptions the first time they heard it, much to England’s delight. Canada’s sucky posture here was entirely intentional, I swear.
In modern times, Scotland still meets up to jam a bit occasionally, with Canada’s creativity and flamboyancy being directly proportional to the amount of alcohol ingested.
I meant to wait for an official Scotland design before drawing this, but screw it. He's dressed as a member of the Royal Highland Emigrants, and yes, they did wear kilts in the Canadian winter, because they were badass like that. Canada's in his Quebec militia uniform, minus the coat and hat.

I have to say I loved the sketch of this on Tumblr!
Little Canada playing the fiddle is the cutest thing ever. Posture is for squares anyways.

I really like this piece, the historically accurate clothing particularly. Nice finger work by the way, it really conveys the instructional nature of the moment with Scotland directing him. Maybe Canada is just in that awkward gangly stage of growing up but his body seems a bit too long in comparison to his leg length. Canada's expression is quite amusing with its uncertainty or perhaps its pain at having to listen to his own work.
I like the violin, its very realistic and authentic looking.
Maybe Canada would have an easier time if Scotland's legs weren't spread quite so wide while wearing a kilt. The other possible explanation for his difficulty concentrating perhaps.
I like this piece, it's very nice and authentic looking. You did a terrific job in transferring the fashion to the characters here.

Thanks for your lengthy comment. It's always fun to see what people think about my work. One of the charm points of the series is applying historical elements to the characters imo. Technically-speaking, Canada's proportions should be just about right for his physical age, but it does come across as awkward (as I think it should be; everything about growing up is awkward as heck).
Ahahaha, thanks for pointing that out, the newly uploaded version should have him less distracting now.
Glad you like this, and thanks again for your comment.

Aw...this is cute! And I can see Matthew knowing how to play the violin (even though in my head-canon, it's Francis who wanted him to learn). I think he looks really adorable in this picture - as someone who plays classical piano, I can definitely relate to that, "Euh...are you sure this is right?" expression

Originally my headcanon had France teaching him as well, but the strips made it look as if Canada was just a toddler when handed over to England (that, and there was the fiddle playing tradition in Nova Scotia that I'd wanted to get across).
Oooh, you play the piano? I never got the hang of it.

KitakLaw In reply to freefallcrash [2011-06-27 01:26:59 +0000 UTC]
Yeah - but that's because my head-canon throws that whole chibi thing out the window *shot* So it has Francis making arrangements for Matthew to be taught (I never decided for sure if he'd teach him personally) as part of some sort of gentlemanly education.
And I've been playing piano for most of my life now. So it's definitely one of my hobbies at this point. By the way, do you play any instruments?

freefallcrash In reply to KitakLaw [2011-06-27 01:45:54 +0000 UTC]
Ah yes, some parts of the canon really do need some alterations *coughfem!Prussiacough* In that case, it would make perfect sense for France to teach him. He'd probably have him sing as a choirboy too.
My neighbour's young daughter plays the piano too, and her practicing can be heard through the wall. It's very relaxing. I don't play an instruments, but I used to play the cello before having to give up. I'm thinking about teaching myself the violin one day; there's currently a borrowed instrument in my possession.

Ah...you have a preference for fem!Prussia, I assume? Or am I totally reading your hint wrong? And I hadn't thought of the choirboy thing - okay...scratch that, it's come to my head maybe once or twice, but that's a cute idea actually
And the violin is one of those instruments that, if time and money weren't issues, I'd love to learn it now.

Rather, I can't really agree with her miniskirt outfit OTL She's more of the kind to wear a man's uniform altered to fit imo. Fem!Austria was pretty much spot-on for me though. France would probably squee at Canada wearing those cutesy choirboy robes.
It's a beautiful instrument, yes? If all else fails, it can serve as a nice still-life prop.

Whoops...my bad, then. But I get what you mean - if you're going to do a female version of the uniform, at least make it one that's actually practical, eh? And that WOULD be cute, seeing Matthew in the choirboy robes...like what people draw Feli in for the Romaheta pictures.
lol - you've got yourself a point there.

I'm confused...why would he have played it out of being passive aggressive...?
Just curious, the art is beautiful, by the way <3
Personally, I do think both the boys would have played the violin.

For one, it clearly shows them which side he's on. It can also be a demoralising move to play the fiddle leisurely while the siegers were freezing their rears off in the bitter cold and while being unable to launch an effective offensive.
Blog entry aside, I'd personally pegged Alfred as a guitarist and singer, but him as a Cajun-styled fiddler paints a nice image too.
Thanks for the fave!

It makes perfect sense as to why he'd do it, I was just curious as to why being passive aggressive would have had something to do with it, I'm passive aggressive myself so I wasn't trying to be rude or anything.
Why he would do it does make perfect sense, though and definitely seems like something he would have done.
Cajun styled fiddler does paint a nice image indeed, but Alfred as a child playing it is a very sweet image.
I do see him more of a guitarist today, especially with an acoustic.

Because he comes across as passive-aggressive, especially in fandom, and the act of playing the enemy's anthem to the siegers would count as such as well? Sorry, but I'm not quite sure what you're asking here.
The bit about him playing the harmonica's nice too.

I just don't think being passive aggressive would have influenced that much, is all I'm saying. I mean, in that time period, it just seems like the thing to do.
But maybe that's just me and being passive aggressive I just don't see you're point...
The image of Alfred with a harmonica really is quite lovely.
