Description
KM - 'General Winter fighting alongside Canada'The Battle of Quebec in 1775, in which American soldiers and the Canadian regiment they'd raised attempted to take on the larger and much more warmly dressed Canadian militia and British regulars during a snowstorm. Undeterred by the subsequent massacre, they then tried to siege the town while a General Winter and Smallpox tagteam made its rounds through the camps. Yep, that probably wasn't a good idea.
Headcanon says Canada would be physically around 13-14 at the time. He's wearing a mix between the Quebec militia uniform, the regular's cap and torque, and a makeshift cloak many of the really ill-equipped American fighters (and their Canadian supporters) had to resort to wearing. Talk about conflicted.
It made no sense for General Winter to wear a Russian uniform that won't exist for another half a century or so, so he gets a British grenadier's uniform. You do not screw with someone wearing a foot-tall bearskin cap.
EDIT: The process steps can now be found here for the curious.

I shall remember to think of you in that get up from now on, if you would like. Given the fact that I see you in my head as your icons, both the polar bear and the puffer fish in Denmark's outfit are hilarious.
Yes, it is very sad. Generally people are fairly good, but you'll run across the ones who believe that New Mexico is just Old Mexico's marketing ploy, and stuff like that. It makes you exasperated, it really does.
Still, I'm flattered. Almost no one who isn't part of New England knows about the New England states. On most people's mental maps we get marked as 'Yar, here be wolves and polar bears' and then forgotten about. u.u Or, 'Yar, here be wolves, polar bears, and crazy liberals.'
Because you should be able to tell their job and where they're from by sight. What century are you looking at? I might have some references in my MASSIVE FILE OF HISTORY folder.
And one of the biggest factors is simply that Himaruya likes to play with his fandom. Just look at how Prussia ages between different versions of Grunwald.
I'm hoping that it will be Germany is the HRE after the 30 Years' War. I have my own complicated answer for how that all works out, given my opinions on confederated nations. But I should get back to wrestling with fanfic. -.-;

Only if I get to return the favour. So far, the only mental image I have of you is your red writing icon, but with the hand making stabby motions with the quill while screaming 'Hakkaa päälleeeeeee' for some reason. Probably has something to do with that scene with Finland attacking Russia's men.
Tell me about it. My sister has American classmates saying Canada isn't a real country and should be absorbed by the US. I don't even.
The problem about it is how using multiple reference pics often result in the character wearing elements patched together from different divisions and ranks OTL I'm pretty good for the time being, thanks (I think Finland ended up as a field officer of some sort, I'm not going to specify what collar badges he's going to wear. Another idea set during the Hundred Years War should be fine because no one had standardised uniforms back then), although my Googlefu is currently failing to provide good images of Canadian shock troopers for some reason.
The changing art style is interesting in general. England looks more and more delicate in the newer pics. I'm wondering if a character could de-age too.
With the recent teasers, that could very much be the case. Didn't Prussia say that Saxony and the rest also exist in that crack cleaning game too? (Best of luck with your writing btw. Goodness knows that level of complexity looks daunting.)

Of course you may return the favor XD. That's an interesting image. Hmm, maybe I should do something like that for my deviant ID. I haven't been able to think of one yet.
Oh dear. I wonder where your sister goes to school (personal info not needed. I just have certain stereotypes of certain parts of the country and sometimes I wonder). That's kind of funny, because my state has a disturbingly high percentage of people who want to secede from the Union and join Canada. Sometimes, I think that the only reason that they haven't got more support is because they're split between the people who just want to make the state it's own republic again, and those who think that Canada is the best option. Not that it's actually a high percentage over all, but if you think that around 20% (I think it's somewhere between 16-18% that are in the Secessionist Party, but don't quote me on that) of your population is /that/ dissatisfied about the country, there is clearly something going wrong. On the other hand, Vermont has a looooooooooooong history of trying to join Canada, and it hasn't happened yet.
Yeah. Multiple ref pictures often end up getting confused. Still, if you can find it, you should try looking into "Battledress" by Wilhelm von Halem that used to create this: [link] It appears to be decently historically accurate.
Really? I've been seeing England as just getting rangier and more towards an ectomorphic body type than more delicate. Meh. Maybe I just get the wrong image with the word 'delicate.' I'm losing my patience with artists who make the Hetalia men look like 12 year old girls, and poor England is one of the most abused in this manner .
Anyway, it seems as though Himaruya is actually aging them up as his style progresses. Again, see Prussia. In the first Battle of Tannenberg strip he looked about 12-14, and in Finland's memory of Tannenberg, he was definitely closer to 18. I actually prefer Prussia being much younger (8-12) in 1410, because the Teutonic Knights were only just (for a given value of 'just.' Life gets confusing when you think in terms of decades and centuries only being a very short space of time for certain beings) starting to consider themselves a separate entity from the Holy Roman Empire. In my head cannon, Prussia did not appear until Hungary invited the Teutonic Knights into her house after 1000. But he appeared in the form of a five year old boy sleeping on some flour sacks. The Quartermaster was not impressed.
And Saxony, Bavaria and the rest not only have been mentioned in the cleaning game, but they have been pictured in the strips explaining the "Kleinduestland" solution from Austria's point of view [link] (you have to scroll a bit for this one, I'm afraid ), and the "War of Austrian" succession strips [link] At least, that's how I interpret the unnamed characters, given how the narrator is talking about them. Saxony and Bavaria even have lines to say.
Anyway, the way I've worked this out is that for confederated nations, like Germany (where pretty much everything was it's own kingdom before joining into the nation), the US, Canada, and the UK, you have the confederated representative of the land (i.e. Ludwig, Alfred, Matthew, and Arthur), and then you have the individual representatives of the pieces of the nation that have their own personality (oh hai thar, Prussia). This is very important for me when it comes to Canada and America, in particular, because I really dislike the idea that there was nothing on the American continent before the European settlers came. That just eliminates the whole of early new world history. If there are states and representatives for the Native Americans, then I can be much more comfortable with the concept of Hetalia (and it makes the colony of Massachusetts Bay, and New Netherland a lot easier and more interesting to talk about).
My biggest problem actually has been that I'm currently enrolled in a seminar that eats my brains and my free time.

Are animated GIFs allowed as IDs? That would look like a pretty literal illustration of 'the pen is mightier'.
Well, she goes to an international school that follows the American system, so there are quite a few students from the US. She wanted to enroll there because it's religious. The textbooks are lopsided to say the least, but least she's happy I suppose. I've heard in passing about Vermont, but didn't know it was that high O_o;;
Thanks for the reference rec (I remember seeing that fanpic, Prussia's pose is hilarious and I couldn't take Austria seriously). So far, I figured that given how the idea basically has both characters covered in mud anyway, I should be fine as long as I get the helmets more or less right. It's the flowers that matter the most anyway.
Hm? I thought ectomorphic was delicate in terms of bone structure? The cover of the 3rd volume has him as pretty thin and short compared to his old drawings. Anyways, yeah, poor England often gets a really bad case of weepy uke in fanart, along with Finland. Good god, poor Finland. Really people, they're male and they've had their fair share of brutal fights for crying out loud.
Hey, that would make sense. I bet said Quartermaster wished he stayed sleeping after he started talking non-stop and waving his sword around chasing the cattle. I wonder if his unusual albino colouring comes from the 'army with a country' saying about him.
Ah yes, I'd forgotten about them in those strips. And, judging from fanworks out there, so has most of the fandom. Confederation shenanigans are going to be interesting if they ever cover them in the comic.
Wasn't there a fanartist who made OCs of Canada's provinces and territories? That was an interesting read. And I hear you on the Native Americans/First Nations. A number of fics I've read had Alfred and Matthew shifting physical features to match the new European settlers', but that hardly represents the different native cultures properly.
Oh man, good luck with that. If I can ask, what do you study?

Hmm. I will look into it! *Valiant pose!*
Mostly it's crack pots who no one takes seriously, but we're a state with a disproportionately high number of crack pots. I'm rather proud of that. Rah-rah! Try imagining my normal avatar with pom-poms XD.
Yay for mud! It solves all problems of detail! Not really, but, um, it could.
And I love how impractical the uniforms of the early 1800s are. It took the Napoleonic Wars to make people decide that pretty soldiers aren't as nice as effective soldiers. Poor Fritz. He liked his pretty soldier men.
Yeah, ectomorphic means the slimmer body types that are built for flexibility and running, but not so much for excessive strength or endurance. I think my problem came from the weepy uke associations of the word 'delicate.' Argh. Weepy ukes make me want to bite my keyboard in half.
Actually the one who I've seen having it worst is Canada. I can't count the number of "Canada's face on the body of what is clearly a breast-less girl" arts that I've seen. If people can only draw that, then they should draw Leichtenstein... Or maybe not, considering he's usually drawn that way when someone is doing something scandalous to him, and Vash would Not Approve.
I want a big rubber stamp with a red ink pad that reads 'Vash Would Not Approve.' Living your life by the example of Switzerland sounds like a good thing.
At some point I'm going to have to either write or draw the formation of the Order of Teutonic Knights, because he is just too hilarious when young. Especially about knighthood. "Oooh, these tenants are AWESOME! Waiiiiit, no girls allowed? What's a girl?"
There are several theories about his coloring.
1. He just is that Awesome!
2. It's meant to represent the weakness of Prussia as albinos tend to have some health problems besides the skin and eyes.
3. It's because he's a 'transitional state' between the HRE and Germany (the amount of history!FAIL that has been caused by and is involved in this explanation nearly makes me not list it, but it's a legit fan theory)
4. The Prussian anthem opens with the line 'I am Prussian. Do you know my colors?' Here's the song. It's actually really awesome, but has a pretty complex amount of associations nowadays. Because East Germans (all from the Prussian territories) were forcibly expelled from a good portion of the Prussian territory after the second world war to rebuild the Polish state, it's associated with a lot of refugee organizations (even with some Zionist organizations!). But because it's the song of a strong Germany at the height of it's power, it's also associated with far right political views and really nasty forms of nationalism. Given the complexity of Prussia's character and history, I think it's perfect XD.
Ich bin ein Preuße, kennt ihr meine Farben?
Die Fahne schwebt mir schwarz und weiß voran;
daß für die Freiheit unsre Väter starben,
das deuten, merkt es, meine Farben an.
Wie werd ich bang verzagen,
wie jene will ich's wagen
sei's trüber Tag, sei's heitrer Sonnenschein,
ich bin ein Preuße, will ein Preuße sein.
Mit Lieb und Treue nah ich mich dem Throne,
von welchem mild zu mir ein Vater spricht;
Nicht jeder Tag kann glühn im Sonnenlichte;
ein Wölkchen und ein Schauer kommt zur Zeit.
Drum lese keiner mir es im Gesichte,
daß nicht der Wünsche jeder mir gedeiht.
Wohl tauschten nah und ferne
mit mir gar viele gerne;
ich werde nicht erzittern;
I am a Prussian, do you know my colors?
the flag floats black and white before me;
that for freedom's sake my fathers died,
that means, remember this, those are my colors.
I never will give up hope,
for them that have risked it [for this flag].
Be it a rainy day, be it cheerful sunshine,
I am a Prussian, and I /want/ to be a Prussian.
With affection and loyalty I approach the throne,
from which a Father gently speaks to me;
and as the Father is faithful to his son,
as will I be faithful to him and falter not.
The bonds of affection are firm.
Hail my Fatherland!
The king's call penetrates my heart so deep:
I am a Prussian, and /will/ be a Prussian.
Not every day may gleam with sunshine;
from time to time a cloud and shower nears.
But no one can read on my face
That I fear those clouds.
Although near and far
quite many would like to change places with me;
Their happiness is deceit and their freedom is illusion:
I am a Prussian, and /desire/ to be a Prussian.
And when the evil storm storms around me,
the night alight in lightnings glow;
even so, it has stormed worse in the world already,
and what didn't tremble was the Prussian courage.
May rock and oak tree shatter,
I will not tremble.
It storms, it thunders, lightning may strike wildly:
I am a Prussian, and /love/ to be a Prussian.
Where love and faithfulness devote themselves to the king in such way,
where King and People give each other a hand,
there has to prosper the people's true happiness,
there blooms and prospers the beautiful Fatherland.
And thus we swear anew;
Love and loyalty to the King!
Firm be that bond! yes, bravely join the bond:
For we are Prussians, let's be Prussians.
And we in the east and North Sea shore,
when we are awoken by rock and wind,
we chaff and march through this bloody band.
We are chained to the throne of Prussia and the people.
We will not backwards look,
No, we look forward with confidence!
We yell at the world:
Really we're Prussians, and /will/ Prussian be!
The Prussian star shines clear from afar,
the Prussian eagle floats on clouds,
the Prussian standard is wreathed in laurels,
and the Prussian sword will crush the path to victory.
High on the throne of Prussia
in the glory of Frederick's crown
controlling us is a king gentle and strong
and every Prussian chest is a shield for him!
Wiki's translation with my clarification edits and re-translation. There's a lot of antiquated (from my biased view with my craptastic street German) language in this song, and the original Wiki translation was, um, strange and different in some areas. Anyway, yay Prussia!
Oh confederation shenanigans. I bet Prussia stole the cake that Germany made to celebrate. XD.
Orangepencils has created a really detailed family for Canada. It's impressive, but I don't think that Orangepencils is the artist, just the character creator. There are bunches of Quebec OCs, running around, as well, and you'll find the occasional Alberta and Saskatchewan
Yeah, them 'becoming' white doesn't cover it for me. Just not enough representation of all of the various I kind of lucked out in the history department for some of the states, because when the colonists landed in Massachusetts, for example, they ended up in the territory of a people that had died from the diseases brought by Dutch and French traders further to the north and west. Yay for plague movement -.- But it means that I can talk about the fact that the Colony of Massachusetts was once a representation for native people, and just adopted new people because his had all died. In the New Netherland Colony the Dutch mixed much more freely with the natives than the English ever would (although the English mixed fairly freely at first--the Massachusetts Colony started to change that among the English), but that is another avenue to talk about the changes that took place in ownership of the land. And then there is the Colony of Pennsylvania, which was originally based around Quaker ideals of fair dealing, but was extremely European, and then when William Penn died the colony was converted out of its religious mind set in exchange for profit motives, but they kept the toleration ideals sort of intact as long as they didn't interfere with the acquisition of power. Yay for personification and allegory! *waves tiny flags*
I study English, btw. I thought about doing a history major, but I like English much better than history. Although I hate academic writing. OTL.

Sanity is overrated anyway. So you want me to picture your writing avatar stabbing a pompom?
That, and intentionally leaving out details with messy brushstrokes. Artistic license, I has it.
Bright colours! Elaborate details and embroidery! Magnificent hats! Francis must have approved of such fabulousness.
Yeah, trust yaoi stereotypes to ruin a perfectly good adjective OTL And I /like/ waify men. With, you know, a functioning spine.
Ah, Canada. And it makes no sense whatsoever since he's often mistaken as America. That would imply a similar height and build. It's kinda bizarre seeing artists make him shorter than America, France or England.
Switzerland's frugality is admirable, but his temper can't possibly be good for blood pressure levels, yes? And sadly, his all purpose solution of very literally troubleshooting wouldn't apply well to my drawing problems, as much as it is tempting to blow up my laptop or canvases at times.
A hyperactive, megalomaniac religious fanatic of a kid with a sword is a failproof recipe for hilarity indeed *nods*
I haven't been around the fandom for long, so those theories aren't familiar. Let's see...
1. Nope, can't argue about that.
2. Prussia's weakness? But technically speaking, unless he went albino after being dissolved, he was as strong or weak as any other country. Singling him out with the obvious health problems doesn't quite make sense. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something OTL
3. Oh, that's a cool way to see it. But given the general messiness of Germanic history, I can see how this theory can go really, really wrong.
4. Ah, I remember seeing references to this anthem. Thanks for the translation, I can't German (I'm assuming you speak it then?). The energy and pride does really suit Gilbo, and why am I not surprised at the Fritz reference?
Prussia and Bavaria probably ended up fighting over said cake too. With such a crazy family, it's a miracle Germany turned out sane. Well, saner than much of the cast at any rate.
The OC provinces I was talking about are from here , but I don't know if the artist designed them herself.
*head swims a bit* With all the regional differences running around, a single, all-encompassing personification would probably mean some epic multiple personality disorder @_@ I think I've seen fic of that before
I was going to ask about the possibility of a minor or even double major, but then I realised that English+History= dead library book withdrawal limit, dead wrist, dead vision, dead brain, and many, many, dead trees.

Sanity tastes good on eggs and toast. I will nom on it on occasion.
Canada will always be the cool older brother in my heart (I still find it weird that America is generally considered the elder of the two by fans), but if moving in with him means becoming part of Quebec I'd rather stick to being part of America. At least then the arrogant people with funny accents are concentrated in parts of the country that I don't often visit XD. Although I suppose they think that my accent is the funny one. Ah well.
Own that artistic license! It is entirely worth it! Plus, it isn't as though you were commissioned to do the uniforms accurately or anything. Add as much mud and strokiness as needed!
It was Francis' fashion sense that powered about four centuries of Western European culture XD. He's still all together too proud of that. I'll stick to my bare feet, hoodie and yoga pants, though. No bling bling uniforms for this troglodyte.
It's the functioning spine thing that is such a problem. Like Norway should be a wonderful ectomorph. A very tall man made of whip-cordiness, and not a spare inch on him. Instead he gets depicted as a twelve year old girl. -.- Shorter than Denmark does not mean that he is short, for crying out loud. It just means that he's not as tall as one of the Hetalian giants. And no weepy uke eyes, plz!
Wrar. I will rant about this one for a long time, I feel. Especially after I reread some of my Viking history books where it goes into how much the Scots feared the Norwegians. It's hard to get more gar than sending a quaking terror into those guys who went into battle without undies because undies were for sissies.
I sometimes have seen pictures with Canada actually given America's mesomorph height and build and just hunching over. So in character. I live for that stuff. It makes up for all of the weepy ukes when I stumble across it.
I need more Schweitz in my life, frankly. I don't see enough of him running around and being awesome on dA. It's odd, because a lot of the Polish artists will try to render Poland as freaking awesome (which as you might have guessed from my writing, I completely support), but you don't get a lot of the Swiss artists doing anything with Switzerland, and everyone tends to picture him in the furious uke category. -.-
Anyway, think of Swiss' love for his little sis. Don't you think you could that example of good affection in your heart?
It would need a lot of research, but I can imagine it being totally worth it. Oh Prussia, you tiny ball of adorable horror.
What I meant by number two wasn't so much his physical weakness, as it was his emotional fragility--the theory is for all that he was strong as a country, he wasn't emotionally prepared to be out in the wide world, or something to that degree. Mr. It's So Fun to Be Alone has very few things to recommend himself with as a friend.
I think what I dislike about the third theory is that Prussia wasn't a transitional anything. Prussia was the knightly arm of the HRE that ended up lost in the middle of Poland and settled down. Then he was half way incorporated into the HRE again when Prussia united with Brandenburg. Then he broke away after the 30 Year's War, and worked on becoming his own Kingdom. He only was incorporated into Germany after a lot of tricky political maneuvering, and he remained on top of the political heap in Germany through a lot of clever dealing until 1931 when he was dissolved. There's no transition there. Just a lot of f-ed up German history.
It sounds wonderful when sung chorally in German. And the interesting thing is that there have been so many leaders named Frederich in Prussia that it kind of just works for any given ruler, and it harkens back to Frederich Barbarossa, the first Holy Roman Emperor and the creator of the Teutonic knights. XD. Prussia has all bases covered at all times, even if it doesn't look like it.
Poor Lutzchen. And the real problem is that Saxony couldn't stand Prussia. Bavaria could at least agree that joining forces with Austria would be a bad thing, while Saxony seems to have had a serious grudge against Prussia. With all of that mess all around him, it's amazing that a confederated idea of Germany ever formed. Basically it was only the idea of the HRE that enabled the various principalities to agree on confederation. More fuel to the Germany = the HRE fire.
Ooh, those are NIIIIIIIICE provinces. I love seeing various OCs that people have created. I just wish that there wasn't so much OC hate swimming around u.u. More OCs! For the sanity of Alfred! Please, think of the nations, and how much they need to have the regions within them take the burden from their shoulders.
Certainly, though our library has no withdrawl limit XD. I'm such a happy camper.

It makes sense though... Canada is just as cold as Russia and has won battles using winter (as dipicted in your beautiful picture) Why does noone understand the awesomness!?~

Canada to me is someone who usually works best behind the scenes and out of the spotlight, but taking an equally important role. An unsung hero perhaps?

Ha, I was thoroughly confused for a second when I mixed this battle with the others ones in Quebec during the Seven Year's War. Glad I got that straightened out.
Wonderfully painted, I loved the dynamics (even if the perspective is a bit awkward) and the expression

Haha, yeah, I was hoping the date in the notes would clear that out XD
Thank you (by the time I noticed the angle inconsistencies it was bit to late to change it OTL)!

Unfortunately, the dates are so close, you really would have to be a history buff to get it RIGHT AWAY. But the little bit after it clears it up nicely!
Nonetheless, it's a very beautifully done piece of artwork <3

Just like a fairytale (or a cover for the series Fables!). I admire the use of an alternate costume.

The Fables artbook is one of my most prized possessions! I was pretty sad to hear the original cover artist quit though.

Wow! This picture is so striking! I love how you depicted the subject matter. It's shows the horror of the battle, without being overly gruesome. The expression on Canada's face reflects how torn he must have felt. The colors also add to the mood. Wonderful image!
