Description KM - 'General Winter fighting alongside Canada'

The Battle of Quebec in 1775, in which American soldiers and the Canadian regiment they'd raised attempted to take on the larger and much more warmly dressed Canadian militia and British regulars during a snowstorm. Undeterred by the subsequent massacre, they then tried to siege the town while a General Winter and Smallpox tagteam made its rounds through the camps. Yep, that probably wasn't a good idea.

Headcanon says Canada would be physically around 13-14 at the time. He's wearing a mix between the Quebec militia uniform, the regular's cap and torque, and a makeshift cloak many of the really ill-equipped American fighters (and their Canadian supporters) had to resort to wearing. Talk about conflicted.

It made no sense for General Winter to wear a Russian uniform that won't exist for another half a century or so, so he gets a British grenadier's uniform. You do not screw with someone wearing a foot-tall bearskin cap.

EDIT: The process steps can now be found here for the curious.

Ooooh, wow, this is incredible. Not only is the picture absolutely wonderful, but you actually put time and effort into the historical research for this. It really enriches it. Also, as a history person it makes me very happy that you care about that. Very happy indeed.

As to the picture, the colours are gorgeous... all the blues and whites and purples go together so well. And I am in love with the way you made America look frozen. It's creepy and very effectively done.

Also, any picture of Canada kicking ass as he rightfully should gives me joy.

Glad you like it! Doing the research was a pain at times (what do you mean, 'Higher resolution not available'? orz), but it looks it paid off? I haven't been in the fandom for long, but I heard apparently historical fanart is pretty rare?

Funny you mentioned that because while that was originally supposed to be America, he was later changed into a random soldier. Guess I didn't make the changes obvious enough OTL Part of the reason was because so many Canadians supported and fought for the invading Americans, Matthew could very well be about to kill one of his own people who probably wanted nothing more than to free Canada from British rule. Ouch. *rambles on*

Thanks!

deepwoodwayfinder In reply to freefallcrash [2011-03-24 00:15:47 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! I totally understand that frustration with research... I do so much surfing for old fashion pictures, and sometimes I find a great one but it's only like... 200 pixels to a side. And then I scream "NOOOO" and dissolve into a puddle of unhappy historian crytears. But anyway, your research totally payed off. And also you heard pretty correctly. There is a lot of historical fanart, this being a historical fandom, but a lot if it is poorly researched and many liberties are taken with clothes and language and setting and so on. It's usually still perfectly good art, but it's a real joy to find something like this, which was most obviously obsessively researched. As a history nerd, I appreciate it.

Oh, I'm sorry! My mistake! It does resemble him. I like your reason for having it not be him, though. It bothers me that so many Americans have such a poor understanding of the American Revolutionary War, and if they do know something, it's usually an idillic view. Even in school I was taught that it was Us, the brave, selfless American patriots, fighting for our liberty against Them, the evil empire of the British. Really it was mostly a ragtag team of American, Canadian, and French Patriots and British-backed American and Canadian Loyalists shooting at each other about land and taxes and nobody really knew what the hell was going on or who was on who's side. It was actually more of a civil war than a revolutionary one. At least that's my college-history-class steeped view of it. So anyway, the fact that you made it a random soldier, that you made it ambiguous as to who Canada is actually fighting, is really cool.

You can ramble, it's fine. I just did... you are among friends.

It doesn't help that there are anachronisms in canon too OTL And er, I've been guilty of some research fail in another piece of Hetalia fanart >.>;; I'm glad this one got your approval though, my history is rather lacking. But Hetalia pretty much rekindled my interest in the subject with the limitless potential for reinterpretation. I wish there was an official Scotland to fight back to back with Canada as a member of the Royal Highland immigrant (and maybe teach him to play the fiddle during off hours).

Oh man, imagine my dismay while going through my American system-educated sister's textbooks. I suppose every country is guilty of inserting bias in history education, but it's dangerous to simplify and twist things to such a degree OTL

Awesome. Some tea?

deepwoodwayfinder In reply to freefallcrash [2011-08-05 01:59:16 +0000 UTC]

Such a late reply, I'm so sorry!

I don't mind history errors in Hetalia art almost at all (especially as I am also guilty of history fail on several pictures), but it makes me so happy to see people like you drawing well researched, historically accurate pieces. You are the kind of Hetalia artist that gives me hope for the fandom.

The American education system is nuts, really. We are so damn egocentric as a nation and our schools don't trust kids to understand the complexities of history. When I do my research papers for classes I try to find articles and papers that do not take an America-centric position, but sometimes it's hard to do, especially for info about any of the wars we have fought in. Our particular brand of patriotism is really annoying.

Why yes, I would very much enjoy some tea! Cream and sugar?

freefallcrash In reply to deepwoodwayfinder [2011-08-06 03:50:00 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I try XD And I can't really blame artists for not wanting to do the research involved in making something accurate though, sometimes I just want to draw something pretty without going through the hassle.

The quality of the university education is still high though, from what I understand. And given how huge the US is with all its different set of laws and regional culture in each state, I suppose it's understandable to a degree to dedicate a sizable part of the curriculum just to cover the country. My own history education was heavily Western Euro-centric.

Please. I'll get some muffins and cookies!

This is a thing of beauty...dammit, now I have the Grenadier's March stuck in my head, but General Winter looks freaking awesome. I'd say your headcanon is pretty accurate for Canada's age on this one. The blues and whites in this (aside from being echoes of the colours Quebec flies, which is an interesting irony) are so vivid, it's a beautiful composition. Excellent work on this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

freefallcrash In reply to Florville [2011-03-23 03:58:18 +0000 UTC]

I had to Youtube that tune, and now it's stuck in my head too XD But yep, I figured Canada would be just barely old enough to defend himself at this point in time. The Quebecois colours were entirely unintentional, but glad you pointed that out. Now all we need is an official Scotland to watch Canada's back as a member of the Royal Highland Emigrants.

BTW, aren't you the one who wrote a series on Canada and Russia that involved your icon as a gift? I *coughs* quite like that fic.

Thanks for commenting!

And I hear you on General Winter. That, and the Canadian wilderness sure did a number on the expedition. Scary.
