Description

    An important early influence on 2-III-C-Delta-Gimmel was my grievances with the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

    I was playing the game briefly during the very beginning of the webcomic, left it away for a while, and then came back to it within the last year. It felt as if it didn't deserve the story which it was telling; the UI design was bland, the voice acting was cynical, the hordes of identical NPCs lacked the humanity which you find in a real crowd, the story didn't exactly resolve, and the execution of many of the parts of the game, its direction, art direction, and even motion capture, felt sentimental and trite rather than as truly provocative as the PSI original must have been.

    The setting of 2-III-C-Delta-Gimmel has parallels to Midgar in Final Fantasy VII; an exoplanet with a life of its own is continuously developed and exploited by an indifferent, despotic corporation who, as they go, manufacture poverty and hyperexploitation within the interiors of their cities to have a constant source of background orgone and upset which they can direct towards colonialism and wars. The largest difference, at present, would be that there's no Rebellion-type faction who are there to contest the massive forces of Technocapital present, just 10 or so alienated urbanites in constant interaction with eachother. A massive rebellion isn't happening because the impetus for that kind of mass movement is not there at present. Life under Postindustrial Capital is so wretched and depressive that, for most people, simply waking up each day is a herculean feat.

    I say all of that here because I modeled the train and the viaducts off of the ones in Final Fantasy. I sought to make the crowds more interesting, hence the salarymen, the Englishwoman, and the multiracial staff of the airport itself. The Modernisme airport is almost exactly as it was in my concept drawings, the main difference being that I had to gradiate the blocks of color in the sky much more using modes of expression more like painting than drawing.
