Description
This is one of three final illustrations for my Intermediate II Illustration course. I chose to pick three different Native American coyote myths/folktales and make one illustration each. Each illustration was done in a flat color style with detailed linework. This illustration is of the Coyote and the Creator. In this folktale Coyote distracts the Creator while he is baking man out of clay. Because Creator is distracted by Coyote the people come out of the fire different colors, thus explaining different skin colors.

Love Coyote's stories, always take home the message that fire forges the chaos into order

Awesome piece!!! I've been learning more about the Native culture, and got to sit in on a drumming circle. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested.

though, just for the record, a breechclout would also have been acceptable for clothing, but I like his attire
Walk in balance

aarroof, play with me tunkashila (one of the name's for creator) play with me, come on tunkashila, play with me *bounding everywhere, then start jumping on tunkashila*
lol, lovely art my friend, it does us justice, the dimension's are not off by that much, and only nominal thing's (the pieces that have already been poined out, the arm, and head, you know what I mean) and can actually be knocked up to the fact that the Coyote is a trick'ster, and as such, would not be supprising to find him to be a little bit wonky in dimension's, all in all, beautifull
Much Love,
Howling Coyote.

Thank you. I was worried about getting the feel right and doing justice to Native American culture. I'm part Seneca myself, not enough for the government to recognize though, but I have always felt a strong connection to native lore and culture.
I am glad that you like it.

I've never heard that myth before. That's such an interesting concept of why different skin colors exist in people.
What makes this piece stand out to me is Coyote's expression of glee vs. The Creator's look of frustration.

Wonderful illustration. I love this story :3 Only problems I have with the image is the coyote is generally thinner then what you drew. Also, the back leg looks way to small for its body.

Makes since, and is a cute story at the same time :3.
The Art is wonderful.
Something I can most defiantly see this in a story book. :]

Wonderful job dear
My ONLY crits are this:
Coyote's left arm is pretty thick and spongy for an animal that is naturally quite thin and lanky. The paw/hand is also very flat and should be more triangular. Coyote also has a rather thick neck and large head, but in a way it fits.
I am especially proud of how you illustrated the Creator and Coyote interacting, if anything I'm ecstatic to see the person clothed, posed, and expressed as he is.
Well done :3

Thank you for such a wonderful critique. I thought such a practice was dead on this site, thank you Ahk!
I agree with the left arm, I struggled with getting it too look right for ages, but had to ink it up "as is" because of time running low. I do tend to always "bulk" up creatures when I draw them, must fix that. And now that you mention it, his head/neck is really big! I never noticed that until now. It doesn't seem quite so disproportionate in the other illustrations, but in this one its really big.
Thank you very much for taking note of the Creator. I spent days researching native Native American attire, which I found impossible to do. There is very little imagery of what Native Americans wore prior to settlers coming over. And even then the paintings have them typified or naked. I had to take in all the reference images I collected and sort out the "white man" elements, then combine what was left over into a viable costume. Figuring out how to dress the Creator took more time than completing the image.
