Description
Pastel on a sandpaper. Rhodies are so different in texture one from another. We had close to 400 different rhododendrons. The leaves on some are slick and glossy, on others rough like old weathered leather. Hopefully I can get the different textures right, to give the flowers their justice.Related content

I should go through and favour a bunch of your fine work, and may do that down the line. What do I say that someone already hasn't said? I like your work. Alot!
"I'll be back!"

Your flower pictures inspire me. They're so realistic! I can feel the soft folds of the petals, the smoothness of the leaves... Everything is so detailed, so alive. Just... wow.

You are too kind, sir. Let's both just inspire each other to create better and better art.

I for one am inspired. I need more time behind the pencil. This kind of beautifully rendered work inspires me to learn more about the medium I have chosen, and to try to convey the tangible (texture, color and form) and intangible (light, depth and movement) as you have so perfectly done.
I'm not impressed by much; but sir, I am impressed by your work and your humility. You are a rarity

I really do appreciate your kind words. You know, I have to stay humble. The reason for that is (you'll understand this because I can see it in your work also) that I refuse to stay in the comfort zone. I'm always trying to push my medium of choice in new and different ways that scare me a little, but it's how I grow. I look at your work and I learn a lot from your approach and skills. Art, and DA in particular, is such a great opportunity to share creative ideas and that excites me.

Me as well. With DA I have the once impossible opportunity or looking at some exceptional work such as yours and communicating with people from all over the world. From Brighton England to Perth Australia; it simply amazes me how much I am learning.
...and to me, that's what he artistic experience is all about. Learning how to see from other points of reality (other artistsβ perceptions of the world around us). It amazes me to see how similar and how utterly unique we are as a civilization (and I use the term loosely). This place and the people of exceptional ability in it are the better aspects of humanity to me, because we all still seek to grow.
Thus ends my sermon for today.

That was beautifully stated. As artists, we have an opportunity to improve the planet, even though it may be in a small way. We have a level field in which we can experience our differences and similarities, and appreciate them for what they are. I thank you for your sermon, it makes me better.

It's amazing. It's like...looking at a photograph. It's so real; it's as though you can reach out and touch the petals and feel the velvet texture of them. I love it.

You did more than do them justice, these look absolutely wonderful. The veiny texture of the petals contrast so well with the waxy smoothness of the leaves.

Outstanding The colours are so rich and "alive". and the texture of the whole thing is perfect. How big was the original?
This is so good you can almost smell it

Thank you. The flower was probably about inches across. My wife and I had somewhere around 300+ rhodies and azaleas before we moved. My hard drive crashed and I lost all the picture I had of them. Oh well, Now I have insentive to find new flowers to draw. thanks for coming to my sight.

When I say sandpaper, I mean, the texture is much like sandpaper. I buy it at art stores. It costs anywhere between $7.00 and $10.00 US dollars a piece. It works great as it just rips the pastel off the stick or pencil. Hopefully that will help you. Bob

Oh! I've seen that stuff. But we've been working with wood so when I hear 'sandpaper' my mind automatically jumps there. I'll have to try it, but I think I'll get better with pastels first. No use wasting $10 USD on a practice piece Maybe I'll practice on actual sandpaper first.

Incredible work, the detail is awesome. The flowers have a fleshy aspect from the colours and how plumped up they look. I'm stunned
