Description Mazel Tov!

Yeah, remember when I said the Spirit Mirror was a religious symbol ? I had no idea at the time just how accurate I may have been. It wasn't until I listened to this song that I realized the truth of the matter.

In all seriousness though, the hell is a Sephirot? I don't really dabble in religion all that much.

I don't dabble much in religion either, but it's this thing.

Since PC-98 spells were not named, perhaps her spells could be named after points on the sephirot.

For example the last spell could be named
Gevurah ~ Cleansing the Holy-land

Gevurah is 'the essence of judgment (DIN) and limitation, and corresponds to awe and the element of fire,'
Gevurah is understood as God's mode of punishing the wicked and judging humanity in general. (source)

I know this comic was originally intended as a joke, but I must say, I'm in full support of this idea!

You barely found out? I've known ever since I've decided to plunder into the PC-98 era.

I'm not a religious person, so unless religious symbolism is plainly obvious, then obviously it's going to go right over my head.

I'm not very religious either, but I have at least studied a few to actually decide whether I believed in a certain faith or not. And in the end, I made a silly choice to just believe in all of them.
And I would have no idea what to even call my religion so I guess just Polytheistic?

FullHitPoints In reply to thatrandomguyangel [2015-05-01 05:24:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was never raised religiously, never studied religion, and ultimately made the decision not to believe in the existence of deities until irrefutable proof is offered that says they do. As such, religion is a foreign concept to me.

It's pretty much all over the PC98 games, really. This is just another example of that.

There is clear indication that Zun is a fan of Shin Megami Tensei, and I kind of doubt that he went to primary sources, so he must have taken inspiration of SMT.

Well, Captainface was excited that there was Judiac symbolism in Touhou, and I was telling there's more than what I just mentioned here. Whether ZUN was inspired by SMT or decided to add the symbolism himself was not mentioned.

But addressing that: it's entirely possible that he was inspired by SMT to research the symbols and add them to his games, possibly because he thought they added a greater deal of depth to his setting and characters. Now, obviously I have nothing to back that statement up, but we don't know what went on during the development of the PC98 games. I've no idea if he used the symbolism because he wanted to add an additional layer of depth, or if he did it simply because SMT did.

Zun according to interviews, did based Touhou Alice on SMT Alice. Not only are they both based on the Alice in Wonderland, but Alice in Mystic square was more akin to a demon or possibly human turned demon and was called "The Girl of Death." SMT Alice was originally a normal girl who befriended two demons from the Ars Goetia, Belial and Nebrios. They wanted her to be with them forever but unfortunately died tragically, so they revived her into a body of a demon. It did NOT go well. She still has child like innocence butΒ Β has zero idea why she shouldn't kill or torture her friendsΒ SMT Alice has an ungodly amount of magic potentialΒ like Touhou Alice and has the ability to kill anyone with her "Die for Me!" spell. Belial and Nebiros still love her and taken her as their surrogate daughter.
This is also kind of funny in hindsight as people see Shinki as motherly to Alice akin to the other one.

It didn't stop there with the PC-98 games. It's clear from the references, music comments, and even a unofficial cameo that there was a ton of things ZUN drew inspiration from.

Funny because ZUN was inspired, yet inspired a lot of people with his first five PC-98 games. I'm certain it's because ZUN put his own charms in those game projects. ^^

Except none of the named antagonists in Mystic Square did anything particularly villainous. The closest thing we got to a villainous act was Alice's attempting to enact revenge on the protagonists, and even then, I believe she's justified in doing so.

That's just scratching the surface. The sephirot represents the several ways that God can "reveal" himself to mortals. The points that match up on the Spirit Mirror are as follows:

"Beauty" - Shinki is one of the most beautiful Touhou Characters in my opinion.
"Eternity" - It's never really stated how long Makai has been around, but considering that it still stands even in Modern Canon is certainly a sign that it still exists.
"Splendour" - Makai could be considered beautiful by some.
"Foundation" and "Kingship"- Shinki is the creator and ruler of Makai.

ZUN, you cunning little devil you!

DeityDiz93 In reply to FullHitPoints [2015-04-26 08:20:48 +0000 UTC]

My goodness ZUN, the fact the points on the Spirit Mirror retains a somewhat relevance to the Makai itself in this context is just something else.

It's things like this that make me really wish modern Touhou enemies had this level of awesome variety.Β This blows my mind just like it did yours.

I actually really appreciate Spirit Mirror for this now.

I have to agree. Knowing this makes the music that plays during it's (brief) appearance sound so much more regal and mystical. Almost as if the mirror truly was a significant part of Makai.

You can thank ZUN for his efforts to sync the stage and the music together for that one. I tell you, it really adds an amount of immersion to the stage, to the point where I am able to know when something is about to appear based on the music alone, more than the Windows games to be honest.

As I mentioned before, the enemy variety contributes a lot to why I love the PC-98 games, Spirit Mirror being a small part of it too. With the Windows era, we end up with fairies and color variations of them with a few other things thrown in, though that is used marvelously, I do want more than the standard enemies that keep getting reused all the time. I feel like the PC-98 games had a level of uniqueness to each game, and enough variety that it became quite memorable.

ZUN achieved a lot with what he had back in the days of FM and 16-Bit Graphics. And for you and me, I'm sure those games have made their eternal mark. I'm thankful for that. ^^
