Very cool and cute! I'm not Muslim, but I know many non-Muslims can learn from this.

I have a question though. It's okay for women not to wear hijab, correct? All the Muslims I've talked to have told me that hijab is between God and whoever decides to do it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FullWhiteMoon In reply to yeahgirl11 [2010-03-07 00:00:24 +0000 UTC]

thanks.

the woman who follows Islam well has to wear it because it's God's order. it's not just between God and the woman. first, it makes the woman look modest, protects her honor and also makes her look different from the non-believing women. also, if all women around are wearing Hijab, it will certainly reduce the lust of men and so rape rates and molestation are reduced in society.

of course, there is no compulsion in Islam, a woman shouldn't be forced by anyone. people around her have the duty to explain why she should wear it and leave the decision to her.

since it's God's order, a woman wearing veil will be rewarded for doing so. a woman who doesn't wear it is sinning whenever a man* looks at her. in the day of the last judgement, we believe a person will go to paradise if his/her good points weight more than the bad points. that's why a real muslim has to try his/her best to sin less and do more good deeds.

*the woman doesn't have to wear the scarf in front of her husband or the men who aren't allowed to marry her (such as father, brother, uncle, son...) and covers in front of all other men.

I hope this answers to your question. feel free to ask if you have other questions.

yeahgirl11 In reply to FullWhiteMoon [2010-03-07 01:56:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the answer!

However, I have another question. Why would it be the woman's fault if a man looked at her when she isn't wearing hijab? Just because a woman doesn't wear hijab doesn't mean she can't dress modestly. I had a Muslim female doctor, and she didn't wear hijab, she just dressed modestly. So why would a woman be sinning even though she dressed modestly and a man still looked at her? I can see if she was dressed skimpy, and I agree that it'd be a sin then, but a woman can only do so much to protect herself even if she does dress modestly.

FullWhiteMoon In reply to yeahgirl11 [2010-03-07 02:18:53 +0000 UTC]

who said the man won't be at fault if he looked at the woman? men and women are both ordered to lower their gaze and not to think bad and behave modestly. if a man looks at a woman and starts lusting, he is certainly sinning.
now for the sins of the eye, some muslim scholars say you sin when you look and think bad and lust. so it depends on what's in your heart. a woman is not responsable for others' sins. she is only responsable for hers. the man also.

as I mentioned before, Hijab is, beside modesty, to make the believing women different from the non-believing women. in fact, even in Christianity and Judaism, women were ordered to wear the veil. the difference is that women following Islam are maybe taking it more serously than other religions' followers. for example, if you go several hundreds years ago, you will find more christian women wearing veil or cover all the body except the face and the hands (some show a little hair, but cover most)

with time, more people started thinking differently and inventing new fashions and stuff. so if the woman wants to follow the new fashions, she is free. if she decides to follow the religion she is also free. no one can say "that woman is going to hell because she is not wearing veil!" because only God knows this... or "that woman is oppressed because she is wearing it".. it's her right. no one can complain about the woman's decision. but people can give advices or remind her. and the last word will be for the woman now and for God in the hereafter.

I agree with you, there are so many women who wear respectful clothes without veil. I respect everyone's decision. and if you like to know, I know girls wearing veil but they behave in bad manners. what can we say when they are forced to wear it because of strict traditions. this makes them go against it in the first opportunity. that's why islam is against oppression. sadly so many close-minded people interpret it in a wrong way.

yeahgirl11 In reply to FullWhiteMoon [2010-03-07 05:17:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for clarifying that.

Ah, well you have a point. However, I think that was a cultural thing; some people believe that the Old Testament is a path for Jews, while the New Testament is for non-Jews. Even in the bible, it doesn't say that a woman has to cover her head, because her hair is described as being her cover. There are various interpretations on that though, and I still have some research to do on it.

Yeah, I had someone tell me that she lives in a community that has Muslims in it, and she said the girls wear hijabs, but they curse and wear profane shirts (like shirts that have curse words on it). I agree with you though, and it would make sense that less Muslim women would be wearing hijab if they was forced to.

Thanks a lot for answering my questions, I really appreciate it!

FullWhiteMoon In reply to yeahgirl11 [2010-03-07 19:40:50 +0000 UTC]

"...she said the girls wear hijabs, but they curse and wear profane shirts..." this is why I stated that so many people understand hijab as the clothes while it's more than that. it's also behavior and good manners.

it's true there are women who might have been forced to wear the hijab. but there are far more than them those who wear it willingly. forcing the hijab is a traditional issue and not religious. Islam is not to blame but some bad strict traditions are.

yeahgirl11 In reply to FullWhiteMoon [2010-03-12 03:24:43 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. I figured it was some traditions, because I've noticed that other Islamic countries, they don't really care if women wear hijab or not.
Besides that, it's totally ignorant to assume that Islam forces women to wear hijab anyways. Most people don't ask Muslims about Islam, they just assume they already know about it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FullWhiteMoon In reply to yeahgirl11 [2010-03-12 03:55:36 +0000 UTC]

"Islamic countries" that you see today are not litterally following Islam correctly. they are trying to mix between Islam and the western laws and this doesn't make them "ISLAMIC countries"
we call Islamic country a country that follows only Islamic laws.

in my opinion, there are muslims, but no islamic countries.

I agree with you in "it's totally ignorant to assume that Islam forces women to wear hijab anyways" all those who bring up this topic are not muslim women, but non-muslims who have very little knowledge about Islam and want to force their way of life on muslims.

but it's nice to meet someone with open-mind such as you who tries to understand before to make conclusions.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

yeahgirl11 In reply to FullWhiteMoon [2010-03-12 04:44:01 +0000 UTC]

That's very true. I didn't think about that. In that case, I supposed it'd be more accurate to call them Muslim countries.

Exactly! I just follow the philosophy to just ask instead of assume. And besides that, it's stupid to think that the Western way of life works for everyone; I live in the West and even I know that the Western way of life is very sinful. I'm also against people losing their culture anyhow.
I'm for people following and believing in what they believe in, because in the end, it's God who does the final judgment.

Of course! Thanks for taking the time out explain it to me! I've studied Islam and I was thinking of converting, but I don't think it's for me. At least at this point in my life.

FullWhiteMoon In reply to yeahgirl11 [2010-03-12 05:13:49 +0000 UTC]

"I just follow the philosophy to just ask instead of assume." this is the right way of the true seekers of knowledge. I respect you for this.

"I was thinking of converting, but I don't think it's for me." it's nice to know this. the fact that you took time to lear about Islam is already great. anyway, May God help you in finding the truth you are looking for.

if you want to ask/discuss anything about Islam, feel free to ask me. I am not a scholar, but I may be able to help... even a little.
