New Avatar_Mode_XY found here.I wanted to make a new challenge mode for Pokemon and I like the show Avatar the last Airbender so I came up with this.
Most types have reasoning to why they are in the Nation they are assigned.
Air:
Flying because air and flying go hand in hand.
Psychic because monks are very spiritual.
Ghost because once again, spiritual.
Bug because it was the last type not assigned anywhere.
Water:
Water because, well water.
Ice because water benders are known to control ice too.
Grass because of the swamp benders.
Poison due to blood bending, makes sense in my mind...
Fire:
Fire because.... do I have to say it?
Dark because they get overpowered by the solar eclipse.
Electric because of lightning benders.
Dragon because they taught the original fire benders.
Earth:
Ground because it's what the earth is made of.
Rocks, seriously, same as ground.
Steel because of metal bending.
Fighting because they are skilled fighters, aggressive.
A lot of people have said "Oh well you can't be [insert nation here] and have a starter!" and my response to that is, catch a normal type on the first route since there usually IS one and box the starter never to be used again. It's that simple.
Please try it out, should be a fun new experience in Pokemon for any and all players. Show it to your friends! Draw up the Avatar Mode run that you did! If you make a comic based on this please send it to me!

If you catch an Arceus, can you make it any type if you obtain the corresponding plate? Or do you have to make it a type that goes with your nation?

I feel like you'd have to use one of the types that's with your team.
Protean and Color Change and Conversion seem like clever work arounds but the plates feel like a stretch.

I know fairy type probably wasn't a thing when you first made this so I suppose you could add that the rules for Normal type apply to Fairy type.
And here's one for ya. If you wanna go Team Republic City, or Chi Blockers, The Equalists or something. Than I would limit it to Normal, Fighting, Steel, & Dark type. Normal for none benders, Fighting for chi blocking, Steel for Sato industries, & Dark type for Amon.

I made a version including Fairy back in 2013. Basically swaps Bug to be treated like Normal types are and puts Fairy where in Air.

So since Steel and Dark types don't exist in gen 1, I thought of a small change to these rules that makes it work for gen 1.
Like in the XY version of this, Bug goes from Air toΒ general/unsorted/misc/whatever-you-call-it
Poison goes from Water toΒ general/unsorted/misc/whatever-you-call-it
Dark is removed
Steel is removed

Dude. This is awesome. I just finished the run on LeafGreen as Air Nation with Charmander as the starter. You have no idea how tough it was beating the Elite Four without a proper elemental diversity. XD
Anyway, I was wondering writing a fanfiction based around your idea instead of simply making a comic of my run. Thought I'd let you know since it's your idea. Credit belongs where it's due.

This could be use for turnys as well. Foe example doing a Fire nation turny and only those in that nation can be used.

I decided to do it again, but in LeafGreen Version. This time, I'm a Firebender.
By the way, I thought of another reason for Dark-types to be usable by Firebender players: they're pretty good physical fighters, too, and Dark-type Pokemon tend to have a higher Attack stat than they do Special Attack.

Just started one on Sapphire. I'm of the Water Tribe, which means once my Mudkip becomes a Swampert, I'll not be allowed Ground-type moves, right?
Also, for "mud" moves (i.e. Mud Slap and Mud Shot), since both Earthbenders and Waterbenders can bend mud (and slurry), are those moves allowed to be used by a Waterbender?

It doesn't really apply to Gen 1, generally speaking
people just play the remakes when playing that generation.
In other words, there isn't really a version that would work with Gen 1.

Just realized that if you play the "nice mode" (both first and secondary type counts), Earth Kingdom players can choose ANY starter in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum

You're the origin of this? Nice! I see you even did the XY upgrade. I'm using a Beedrill in Silver right now 
I've realized Earthbenders in Johto have it rough. Only version exclusive Gligar and Skarmory can fly them around, a lot of good Pokemon like Larvitar and Slugma aren't available until the second half, and the Steel type is still underdeveloped.
I'm getting interested in reading/writing about the challenges each discipline faces, especially in early gens.

what about generation 1 games? the fire and earth nation would become less powerful since steel and dark didn't exist

Earth nation would have to fly around on Aerodactyls, while firebenders need to catch Moltres or Zapdos and they'd both have to surf on Snorlaxes. Or the Earthbender could use Poliwrath.Β
In Gen II, even with their new types, things have actually gotten worse for them. Firebenders need to fish for a Chinchou to fight the elite four, and lack any way to fly until they can catch a Dratini. And evolve it to a level HIGHER THAN THE ELITE FOUR. I gotta do a fire run next, because THAT is a challenge. Earthbenders have it better, being able to get around on top of a Quagsire and fly on a Skarmory (which is still pretty late).Β
As for Gen I, an ideal fire team would be:
Charizard
Zapdos
Dragonite
Jolteon/Magneton
Ninetales/Moltres
Snorlax
Earth would be:
Rhydon
Nidoking/Nidoqueen

Hi, a group of us are doing this challenge (we credited/are crediting you in the descriptions)Β for our YouTube channels and are all taking different approaches in terms of games. A quick question I don't understand is the starter. I'm choosing Fire nation, so the starter I can choose is Torchic and I'm confused as to whether or not I am allowed evolve it since it gains Fighting type, which is only for the Earth nation; the same goes for other PokΓ©mon since I can't get a Flying type becauseΒ I am not Air nation either, so I am not sure if I can have a Flygon learning Fly since it is a duel Dragon/ground type, so I am confused as to whether I can use PokΓ©mon like Blaziken since it has Fire type, but also Fighting type.

It depends how difficult you want the challenge to be for yourself. If you want it to be EXTREMELY challenging then by all means use only those four types and not dual types, other wise as long as it has at least 1 of it's 2 types in your nation then you're good to go.

I think you can still use Torchic, since Combusken and Blaziken have Fire-Fighting, not Fighting-Fire. Fire is their main type, with fighting as their secondary, so I believe that it would still work out.
From what I see, there are no restrictions regarding moves, so you can teach a winged PokΓ©mon fly.
Flygon is Ground-Dragon, and Trapinch is initially a Ground, so perhaps you should catch a Bagon later on deep in Meteor Falls instead since you can only get Vibrava if you evolve Trapinch, get it from a friend, or somehow hack your game (which would be cheating <_<). You can also get a Flygon from a friend (if one has a Flygon in the first place that they're willing to part with).
You should count not just on the PokΓ©mon's primary types, but both and what type they'll be when evolved fully (if allowed; it gets you more variety to work with). You should probably wait for funnyman2416 's reply, though.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing that if it has its primary type as the one assigned to my nation, then I can still use it because I'll be honest, Torchic will have a few problems with the first gym. I have found a substitute for Flygon since its primary type is Ground and not Dragon and have gone for Swablu, I can still use Swablu as it loses its Normal typing and gains Dragon as its primary so can still use a winged PokΓ©mon.

If on one route I found a Wurmple, but since I'm Fire nation I can't catch it, so would it be against the rules if I ran from it and caught something like a Poochyena on the same route in place of the Wurmple?

Were you trying to do Nuzlocke and this at the same time? I don't think that's a very wise move. It just means you won't be able to use any Pokemon and your game will collapse from lack of HMs.
I think that the point is you can have any type of Pokemon, as long as either its type OR subtype belongs to your nation.
