"I heard it's your birthday and you know what that means, we're gonna have a big PARTY with all your friends and there's gonna music and streamers and balloons and punch and dancing and ..." [insert random Pinkie Pie rambling here]Man, Pinkie Pie is too damn cute. I regret nothing. I was pleasantly surprised at how this turned out, but finding a category for it took a while.
My favorite frame is the third one, which incidentally is also the preview image. I can't stop giggling like an idiot. I can almost hear the bouncing sound. All of the animations in the newest Desktop Ponies release only reinforce my belief that Pinkie is the cutest and most adorable of the bunch.

I really miss the old style of animation they had for pinkie. It's kinda hard to tell but in recent episodes she looks a bit off. They're also not coming up with as many good lines. But this is a great example of the old animation style they had! Even something as simple as just bouncing brings back nostalgia!

I gotta admit, this is amazing. I've also tried my hand and traditional animation, and, though hard, it's really fun and can end with pleasing results (if enough devotion is given).

... Okay, Google translate says so, at least what sense I can make of the translation. I don't want to go through the trouble of making a DMCA claim about this. It's got one vote and comments from maybe 7 different people. And I'm sure there are other stolen versions of this out there that I don't know about.
Also, I doubt that many people actually care about who made this. I've seen this and other popular stuff used quite a lot around pony sites and almost never saw anyone interested in the artist who made it. Thanks for telling me about this though.

This goes in my favorites for the sheer amount of work, dedication, and passion put into its completion. Then because of the quality and impressive execution of concept so skillfully enacted. And finally because ponies.
I'm in awe of how well this is made; every frame is so saturated with Pinkie Pie that the only way to write something of justice for this was to put 'Smile' on a loop as I crafted these praises. And that every frame (18, did you say there were?) ultimately contributes and culminates into a so much greater whole that it deserves nothing less than applause. This is so much up Pinkie's alley that I can only imagine her bouncing up and down and chirping ecstatically about something or other, whether it be about the next event she capriciously decided to throw a party over, or some sporadic whimsey that she just has to share with somepony, or she heard that she's a star of a TV show in another plane of the multiverse that spreads as much joy as she does.
The one thing off about this though is that the shading isn't consistent, but then I'll be damned if anyone but an anal-retentive prodigy would be capable of keeping something like that consistent.
I never got this far in my graphics training, so I hope you don't mind if I ever so inquisitively inquire of you (read: pester) you about the proper procedures required to make animations as good as this. Okay? (Doesn't wait for answer.) Splendid! First question I have is how do you plan out something like this? Determining where a character sound be by each individual frame, how much movement there should be in between each frame, etc. Also, and this is what gets me even more, how do you make each frame hold such uniform similarity across the entire animation? Or in layman's terms, how do you maintain consistency so that the character drawn in each frame looks similar enough to each other frame, so the character isn't going through wild anamorphic shifts? Because as tricky as drawing things can be from time to time, drawing something repeatedly and making it look like the same thing every time is hard as hell. And finally, the one that escapes me the most, how do you draw everything out in an expedient, efficient fashion? Because even as easy as ponies are to draw, it still takes me an hour or more per on just one sketch to make everything look absolutely perfect. (Which, as you might've guessed, means deadlines absolutely murder me.)
Some thorough advice and guidance would be infinitely appreciated, so when I inevitably tank these trying tasks in my own coursework I don't get my balls rocked harder than trying to do a speed-run through Castlevania. Regardless, I offer my lavish praises and unrestrained commendations for this fantastic accomplishment.

But thank you. Thank you very much. I admit, I got a bit more aggressive with the shading in the later frames. I even tend to do that in single drawings where later shadows get darker than the ones I drew first.
But ... proper procedure? Sorry, but I'm just a guy with pencils. I never had any graphics or animation training. And I even only had one useful pencil at the time. Once I had the first frame of Pinkie, I improvised a light table or whatever that's called in the animation business by opening a new, white document in Photoshop in fullscreen mode and turned up my screen's brightness to max. Sketches don't have to look perfect at first. Sketch lightly and, after you're done, go over the good lines with a darker pencil. My scanner usually doesn't even catch the light sketching lines. With the "light table" I can then hold one empty piece of paper over the one with the previous frame and keep the body shape, proportions and positions consistent. Well, somewhat. I'm sure that if I spent more time on it then I would have gotten rid of that wobble of her belly when she's on the ground. But things like the positions of her eyes and nose, ear shape and hair line don't change and can be basically copied across all frames.
The most annoying parts were the lines inside her mane and tail. I added them after I had each frame and didn't use the "light screen" for them. Same for the cutie mark. I don't think I can help you much if you want to talk jargon, but I know that ~JustDayside also loves animation. You should ask him for advice rather than me. I didn't really plan anything for this. This only has 18 frames, because I often thought, "Eh, one more inbetween." The neck stretch was fun, though.

Lol, sorry. If there's one thing I'm not, it's concise. But that vast volume of valuing verbiage is just my way of praising a grand accomplishment, which you have certainly done here.

Shading animations with pencils isn't really something that you see in animation, in for nothing else that keeping the gray-scale gradients consistent throughout the entirety of the film would b nothing short of a Herculean task. Probably why painting was generally the best choice for coloring frames before software became efficient enough to replace everything else, and henceforth Photoshop dominated the landscape.
Ah, improvised light board tables... funny thing is I've actually used those before, years ago. For deviations I've made in the past that had a lot of characters on a single image (most notably 'KP+dA: Follow The Leader' [link] and 'Gruntball' [link] ), I would draw them all separately and then trace them all onto a single sheet of paper for the final image that I would color. I'm actually working on a new piece that has more characters than I've drawn for a single piece before, but this time around I plan to go up to the community college here and copypasta them into one image after I've colored them all via photoshop.
In all actually, the way do described how you made this sounds spot on to how I had always theorized is was made, or at least speculated was the easy way out. I always thought the key to animating professionally required some inhuman level of talent to be able to draw countless images purely from memory and have them all look alike; the kind of flabbergasting ability you'd only expect to see from proteges. But with your recollection (thanks for that, btw) of the process, I've probably already known how to make these all along and didn't even know it! It's like those times I'm looking up how to play a particular song on guitar only to find it was made up of simple chords that I already knew.
But thanks for relaying that information to me and for the referral to JustDayside, I'll be sure to look him up. I didn't even realize that her neck stretches at the end of the animation, but this entire piece still has awesome pulsing through it's every vein. Perhaps now I could try my hand (my hoof?) at animations, but I'm presently plowing through a plethora of future posts pertaining to ponies (two album art parodies, a mass ensemble of no less than sixteen characters, my own ponysona, and a massive fan fiction I'm working on with my youngest brother plus the promotional artwork for it, as well as two other non-pony related album art parodies), so for the moment, I'm completely swamped.
