Description
I'm sure there will be a bunch of these popping up around here, but I'm submitting this anyway. I want to validate the 3 hours I spent sitting in a field freezing last night, and I was definitely not helping my cold.Anyway, while the moon was fully eclipsed I had to use a longer exposure, which made it blur a little. Plus I think my lens was fogging up without me realizing it. Overall, not too bad for my first attempt at astro-photography though.

Marvelous capture, and I admire your patience and fortitude. If anything, stopping at the halfway point is of itself a way of making a shot like this stand out.

Thanks! I figured if I wasn't going to make it all the way, I might as well at least go half way

That is a beautifully caught shot! I love how you caught all the stages of it becoming eclipsed!

Thank you. I wanted to get all of the stages of the entire eclipse, but I was freezing by the mid point.

hello. Great sequence please !
I read on fogging etc.
I was into astrophotography some time ago by chance and love actually....
Once I read on an article on a magazine stating one specialised photographer in the astrophoto issue called the lens maker and after got some technical info etc. he managed to make a quick patent made of a ring (wide enough not to vignete on lens) with very tiny resistance metals around which were heating up via battery during his exposures without overheating the lens and its barrel.
The voltage was quite low just enough to make the metallic resistance to heat and dry all the area around lens so fogging was almost disappeared when using very long exposures.
Maybe this of any help to you so I wrote it as it came to my mind.

Thank you for providing me with some information on lens fogging. It was very interesting to read about.

how the hell did you do this
Btw where do you live because I think I've seen the same eclipse, but I don't know if it was in august... but if you live on the same side of the earth as i do it probably is
great picture btw

Thank you so much! I live on the west coast of the usa. Oh, and I did this by sticking my camera on a tripod and then taking a shot every 10 minutes or so. Then I merged them all in photoshop.

this is great. I've seen so many of these photos done and they're never all that beautiful... they're always lacking focus or something..
This one actually works well!!

Awesome job, Love how yours came out with the red shadow. Wish I would have gotten the red moon here, but I also love the way you put yours together.
I understand what you mean about sitting around for hours just to snap some shots every couple moments though. Makes for a long night.

yeah me to... Any way maybe next time. A thing about astrophotography, the moon is really easy to take pictures of, you don't even need a tripod (just a fast shutter and a long range telephoto lens). Still 200mm on a DX sensor does the job reasonably well, I was wondering why did u use 100mm on the Canon...?

futureplug In reply to SantiBilly [2007-10-04 20:27:03 +0000 UTC]
Because that's the highest lens I have. It's actually the 100mm macro lens I just don't have the money to buy a telephoto lens...yet.

SantiBilly In reply to futureplug [2007-10-04 20:31:49 +0000 UTC]
Buy a cheap zoom, nowadays quality is far beyond that of the early years! (the zoom I've got is a 55-200mm) 250$ (expensive but cheap in a way)...
But using a macro lens to photograph a moon... focusing would be eternal.
Considering that fact now this pic gets even greater credit!
and I'll be you!

Haha...yeah. Using a macro lens to take photos of the moon does seem a little ridiculous doesn't it? I actually use it as a "telephoto" lens quite a bit since the only other lens I have is the kit 18-55. An actual zoom lens would be so nice though.

Didn't even know there was an eclipse recently. The process of the light going and the red shadow emerging looks really interesting! How did you arrange the moons in that line... was the camera mounted on a tripod and it shows the moon moving through the frame? Or you just put them this way?

futureplug In reply to Ratafluke [2007-10-02 03:51:03 +0000 UTC]
I had my camera on a tripod and this is the path of the moon through the sky. I wanted to include some of the ground to give some orientation, I didn't think the moon would stand out much. I was basically torn between a wide angle shot, and this. It's too bad I only have one camera and had to choose

Looks cool this way, I think any ground would only have distracted from the minimalist composition :]

Using photoshop. I just added each shot as a layer set to screen. Simple really. The hard part was making sure I had the exposure set right every each time I took a shot and making sure that each shot was the same interval apart. If you have any other questions just let me know.

Haha! I was planning on staying up until 6 or so, when the moon went below the horizon and having a shot of the entire process. But around 3 I started to get tired, plus my feet and hands were getting numb, so by 3:30 I decided it was time to leave.
