Description on the picture below i show how is my documents folder look like. you ask me how i done it. its easy i think. you need a program to edit icon resources (i used icoFX).
follow this steps:

0. Very important!!! make sure you have untouched copy of edited files. this is safety reason you surely understand. i don't take any responsible for damages causes by editing system files.

1. find and copy somewhwre this file (i give you a path):
c:\windows\system32\imageres.dll

2. from icoFX menu chose tools -> resource editor...

3. from the new window just chose open... and find your imageres.dll file

4. after open, you will see icons included into this file. click right mouse on the icon you want to replace and chose change...

5. find a icon you want to have as a new icon in this place. you should heve ready icons to use.

6. when finished just save and exit icoFX program.

7. now rum system into save mode.

8. in the seve mode replace original imageres.dll file in your system32 folder with this edited by you.

9. restart and enjoy.

10. i did it. and it is works... !!!

you can always back to defaults setings doing steps below with original file (which you should always have somewhere).

in the back-right window you can see how looks my default system folders. i need to check the colours in them but this how windows do it right after i create a folder - withou manual customization!!!

in the front window you can see how My Computer looks like. for hard drives and usb devices you can just create a icons you want and create a autorun.inf file. this icon should be copied into drive (c:\ d:\ etc). you have to edit this file in notepad and write something like this:

[autorun]
icon=name of your icon.ico

just like that. put the properly name in it, and make sure, that ico extension is placed once only (sometimes it can be problem). you can also put a path to tour icon file just after = and before name (simply path like DOS path if enyone remember good old DOS). if the autorun.inf file is created without mistakes and your icon is in the right place (showed by path) you have to logout/on OR restart OR if you customize removable device just disconnect and connect again. you know what way will be good for you.

and one mor thing. icons for the empty dvd drive and maped drives (connected and disconnected as well) are made using the same method as showed below with the folders. you have edit your imaginere.dll file. i hope you will enjoy this.

why sucks???
i done it and it works in 100%
You can choose your icon whatever you like. Propably the final effect depend from quality of icons you try to put into the system.
And main problem (for me) s the system protection, but as i write in my tutorial it is possible to do wahtever you want under save mode.

besides if you want to say things like 'sucks', please give me more details.
