Description
Purple-throated Sunbird (Nectarinia sperata or Leptocoma sperata), also known as Van Hasselt's Sunbird, is a species of bird in the Nectariniidae family. It is found in Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. These tiny birds are really gorgeous creatures and extremely active. The male (pictured here) has extremely striking iridescent plumage, emerald green head, dark violet wing feathers and crimson breast and the shiny purple throat which gives it its name.
It was quite tough shooting these buggers, partly because their plumage was quite dark and the camera tended to underexpose for them against bright backgrounds like the one above.
