Hi There!
You have just earned yourself an O.D.D. feature ! congrats!
Today's theme was titled "Antique Devs". I hope to draw new audience and attention to the deviations of past
ODDS (oibyrd's daily deviations) are to honor the sometimes overlooked artists of dA that I personally think deserve some exposure (and ALSO, to show off people who I think are undeniably talented in their own genre of art, REGARDLESS of their #'s of fav's or pageviews. I like what I like and sometimes artwork isn't featured in the regular DDs because of sheer numbers. It's a shame, but the admins are only trying to be fair ). Please click the link below to see your work featured and to view other featured artists. If you prefer not to be a featured artist, just send me a note and I will remove you from the list. Cheers! xoxo Sandi

The detail is brilliant and the whole feel of the piece is very gothic. I keep thinking that it looks like some kind of curiosity in an 18th century museum. Brilliant.

Considered? yes. Sans macabre? probably no time soon.

my fantasy self-portraits are probably the nearest I come to cathartic art

"I love the place your mind was in when you created this."

I can't help but be made terribly curious by a line like that.

Tell me about, and why you love, that place.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyejcb In reply to garmr [2004-05-28 12:42:39 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's not simply because of the overall macabre aspect of the piece. I'm not really into the dark and dismal, if that's what you'd like to know. In the same place this darkness lives, there also lives a space filled with introspection and self-study. It's *that* which draws me. I do it a bit myself, though have never carried it to this level (perhaps I should).
The set of the one eye looking at us...but not quite looking at us, and the capture of the highlights on the skin of the lower lip, and how the upper lip just barely reflects it - are just brilliant. You were really noticing all possible elements. Some of us would do well to look this closely sometime. I don't think it was just the surface you were capturing.

Sometimes I like to go back and re-examine pieces I haven't looked at for a while. Today I chose this one. I love the place your mind was in when you created this. The execution is perfect, if anatomically off (the skull size, but you already know that). BUT, the point of this piece isn't anatomical study, but something much deeper. To me, it conveys the thinness of the veil between the living and the dead.
That little detail of the earring...how perfect and golden it is, even hiding in the shadows like that. Were it me, I might have overpowered it with too much color - but this is how it *should* be done.

Verrry realistic. This is so cool! You've laid the skin over quite nicely is this a study of anatomy?

p.s. I love oil on panel, it's one of my favorite mediums. Panel just gives the paint a cool look.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

garmr In reply to diamondscan [2004-03-05 05:19:21 +0000 UTC]

no, I actually did this before I took my indepth anatomy classes. If I'd done this later, I might have been tempted to make the skull-half a bit smaller (it would be, realistically). However, I think the size helps balance the piece better, and emphasizes the thinness of life over death.

PPS: yes, panel is definately the best for detail & control; there are some longevity issues if you use masonite, though.

yeah, canvas seems to work best for preserving things, but in 400 yrs will you really care what condition your work is in? Well maybe, but enjoying things while they last is fun.

take care

What sort of people live about here?asked Alice.
In that direction, the Cat said, waving its right paw round, lives a Hatter: and in that direction, waving the other paw, lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.
But I don't want to go among mad people, Alice remarked.
Oh, you can't help that, said the Cat we're all mad here..
