Description
I studied alligators, crocodiles, eagles, horned toads, iguanas (lots of iguanas), snapping turtles and turkeys to construct this piece. It ends up looking like the chicken messiah, come to avenge countless nuggets. I may or may not try again.Related content

Wow this is beautiful. It's great that you studied so many different animals to make this drawing. IT really makes this drawing unique. This is beutiful! It really does look lik every animal you studied. One suggestion, though. THe torso and body are a little small compared to the head size. Otherwise, this is beautiful and I love all of the details you put in, they really add to the drawing. Great job!

hail to the turkey and snapping turtle inspiration! I definately see the snapper in him, but the turkey seems rather subliminal...could it be his dulap? but that could also be the iguana in him. Anyway, his frill looks a bit like a turkey tail (and a little bit like a styracosaurus ^^) and his pectorals even look like turkey breasts XD

The detail in this is very impressive. It actually looks quite cheeky for a dragon. I think its the eye. Reminds me of a dog that might just turn around and lick you at any moment.

nice hybrid of ur observations and studies~good looking drake i must say...i can see the amount of detail u put into it...but i guess wat stop me from giving it full stars is the lack of depth and the rather flatness in the colours...if there were some stronger planes of highlights(esp in the drake's body of plates) this would def have stood out more in its own right....but still,very good piece of work..i must now take a look at your other pieces!~

at first it just looked like a really cool looking dragon. I didn't even knowtise the chiken beak. It just fits in so naturally.

a) this reply/comment isn't so much for you as it is for young artists in general. In no way am I being critical of you, your opinion, or your abilities.
b) Detail "density" or "concentration" is a design element that establishes visual "rhythm" in a piece, and is an important compositional element. Young artist often feel a piece isn't "finished" if the detail level of a piece of art isn't constant throughout. The prevalence of this misconception is evident in the work of even the most popular artists on this very site. The fact is this: high relative detail draws the eye to a point, while the viewer moves through lower detail areas. This visual interaction generates "flow" through a piece, and is one of the foundations of good composition.
Is "Drake" a good and complete example of this compositional truth? No, not really. Does the creature's body need to have the same level of detail as the face? No, it should not. Lower detail in the neck allows the viewer's eye to move through that whiplash curve without over stimulation, and the scales set a visual rhythm as you move through that space.

Well put, I'm glad to hear that at least it was intentional. I know I'm not really much of an artist but with the amount of work put into the face of this picture, it's almost anti-climatic to look at the rest of it. Still it's a great piece, and well deserved DD, and I know I wouldn't want this guy to avenge the amount of nuggets I've eaten.

I love the malicious look in it's eye! The only thing I can find to critique is the shoulder-- it looks a bit plain or rushed when taken in with the incredible detail and texture of the rest of the image. Amazing, though.
