Description
I studied alligators, crocodiles, eagles, horned toads, iguanas (lots of iguanas), snapping turtles and turkeys to construct this piece. It ends up looking like the chicken messiah, come to avenge countless nuggets. I may or may not try again.Related content

All hail the Chicken Messiah.

Wow thats really really cool! Great piece!
n00b question here but by "Wacom" do you mean you used a graphics tablet/pen to create this?

Beautiful piece of art, I realy like dragons, and this reminds me of the best like the ones in D&D 3ed, handbooks.

great painting, great creature, very realistic. but I think the fullview size is too big. I know you want to show the details... nice pic overall.

I have to know what program and settings you used on this -
Usually digital art (mine anyway) ends up getting a blurriness to it (sometimes useful, but often undesired).
Also - When I first saw it it reminded me of the Skekis too
(a good thing)

The piece was done in Photoshop 7.0 with a Wacom tablet. My technique, in a nutshell, is a b&w tonal layer/a color multiply layer/and a color normal layer. This piece started as a scribbled sketch using largely hard-edged brushes to give it crispness, followed by soft brushes to round the forms.
The only technique for non-blurriness I know is using very small brushes and being very patient. Most of this piece was done with a 3-pixel brush running at about 50% opacity.

The curve of the neck and the way the scales curve over it is fantastic. The most ideal thing about this piece is the glimmer off some of the more metallic spikes but not on the ones closer to his neck. It gives it a totally three dimensional feel. personally I get tired of dragons that look the same over and over again. I love what you've done with the face giving it bird and lizard traits makes it more believable...like some weird hybrid.
The only critic I have is to make the light sources more believeable and stick to just one it seems you have more in this image.

"news just in... experts warn that the bird flu virus has mutated into a far more deadly form..."
just kidding i don't think it looks like a killer chicken spirit, a killer something tho
love the detail, & how the highlights pick them all out. what medium did you use, & how big was the original?
2 small critisisms, for constructive purposes of course
i think the background is a bit formless, while the blue & green tints contrast nicely the lack of detail kinda lets down the piece as a whole i think. of course too musch detail in the background can distract from the main subject, but evidently you're a skilled artist, perhaps you could pay a little more attention to the background here to make it more complete looking.
the other critisism is a minor one - some of the airbrushwork on the shoulder is a little rough.
apart from that i think it's a really good work, a great example of how important it is to prepare pieces by doing lots of research.

Medium: this piece is wholey digital; I'm playing with my girlfriend's Wacom.
Criticisms: you are correct on both counts. I'm tired of this piece (hence my tonge-in-cheek presentation) and need to move on. I've invested too many hours in the chicken.
Thanks for the criticism. It's greatly appreciated.

Yay for dragon research! Why don't more people do that? I don't even do it, so I'm a hypocrit and suck, but I still think people should do it.
The textures rock. Looking at it, it's almost like I can feel it's scales and horns and skin and everything.
I like the pose. It gives a feeling of heavyness to it's head, as if there's a lot of dense skull in there (for avenging nuggets, of course.)
I like the color and texture of the tongue.
I'd love to see what the rest of it's wing looks like.

Reminds me of the Skeksies from the Dark Crystal ([link] ) which is in no way a bad thing. Very nice and a very different way of looking at a drake than most.

a) Dark Crystal is one of my favorite movies; I'm glad you see the influence.
b) Have you ever wondered what the Skeksies would have looked like earlier in their existance/reign? Hmmm... I may have to work on that.

Awesome piece, I'm sorry that I didn't see it until it was picked as a Daily Deviation. I really admire the amount of research put into the piece, it really shows in the detail.
My first thought when I saw this in Full View: "Looks like a Froud."
