This picture may not be a technical wonder but I'm fascinated by the female spider's dedication.I found her sitting on the fleece that covers one of my planters. She's no more than maybe 10 mm long and has not stirred from her post on top of her eggs for the past two weeks, no matter how much I've moved the fleece around. Luckily she had a small fly with her as emergency rations but that's disappeared since I took the picture. I have no idea of how long she'll have to remain vigilant before her eggs hatch.

Recovering arachnophobe here, and I have to agree with Shakespira. Rather than cringing away when I saw the subject, I just sat and admired the beauty of it. I still wouldn't like Mama Spider to crawl on me, but she's got beautiful markings and her legs are actually pretty amazing!

That is such a great image. My son asked once If I thought I would be able to kill someone (I had probably held one of those 'violence is always a bad thing' speeches) so I had to admit that if someone seriously threatened him or his sister I would certainly do my best.Β
