Description
I'm hoping that the folks at DC are going to do something concerning the obvious similarity between these two costumes...but I'm not holding my breatAnd yes, I played up the similarities by giving Nightwing that belt and Batman the lines around his neck and wrists. Don't judge me.

You know, when the New 52 first came out, I totally agreed with you. I'm a huge fan of Chuck Dixon and Scott McDaniel's run on the character, so it just looked strange and unnatural to see Dick in red. But not long after, I was watching Batman Beyond. Terry had his mask off, and he looked almost exactly like the new Nighwing. Then it kinda clicked for me. I doubt it will ever be part of the storyline that Nightwing's suit evolves into the Batman Beyond suit, but it's cool to think about.

Man this would be such a great style for an animated Nightwing cartoon.

Oh, you don't even know what I would give for an animated Nightwing toon! I'll take Nightwing over Beware the Batman any day!

Same here! I've been hoping to see a Nightwing toon forever. The DC direct to video animated features have been great, I've been crossing my fingers hoping they'll do one about him. Or at least an Outsiders one or something.

I'd even settle for a short, like they did for Green Arrow and The Specter. Those were cool.

You know, I actually hated Nightwing's red suit until I noticed the similarity, but now I love it It's all about context, right? But Dick and Terry are definitely my two favorite Bat-characters, even more so than Bruce!

Never made that connection until now, but it works. Ironically the two have the coolest costumes in the Batman family.
Art comment: I like the unrealistc/stylized proportions on this one.

I actually try to use those proportions all the time. It's just that the more I struggle with a drawing, the more the proportions even out. Fortunately, this one came pretty easily, so the stylization stayed intact.

I understand, my pictures usually become less stylized after I "fix" them. It's probably because I'm changing "style" for "realistic," oh well "practice makes perfect." Still a neat drawing.

Wow, those are rather similar costume designs. Did they both hire the same fashion designer? Even taking into account the tweaks you said you did, you'd think Batman would have something against a look-a-like...

Way to go, this is the best rendition of Nightwing I have ever seen, & I love the overshadowing bat. It would make my decade to see an entire cartoon modeled around this style, you can see every bit of Grayson's personality in his body language & facial expression! If you don't mind the speculation, it looks like you designed him so that one can tell just by looking at this that he has overcome a lot at this point & he is finally making peace with his past. If the timing is right, it could also be a hint of "I'm glad Batman is back & I'm back on my old beat!"
Now, I have not gotten my hands on any of the new 52 yet, so I am trying to make the connection here; which batman is behind him? Terry McGinnis? Or a transitioning Bruce Wayne? Or perhaps Dick Grayson, foreshadowing if this Nightwing hasn't taken on the cowl yet, or as a ghostly remembrance if he's' already been Batman & returned to his Nightwing persona.
Still... Art has always been a big part of my life, & I brush past pages & pages of all kinds of art on a daily basis. Nightwing is my favorite DC character, so I know what he is supposed to look like & the empathy you are supposed to feel towards him when you know his history... & of all the mediums I have seen him in (which there simply aren't enough of, he needs his own TV show & live action movie already), comics, cartoons, video games, & fan-art, this is seriously the best, topping the version from Arkham City which was my previous favorite. This piece came alive the moment I saw it & it provokes all of those thoughts at once!
Sorry this turned out so long but I could not resist commenting on this!

Wow, your favorite?! I have to say, man, I'm kinda speechless. There have been so many versions of Nightwing drawn by so many great artists, and I'm truly honored that you would put me in their company. Scott McDaniel's version is probably my favorite, and I try to imitate it in a way every time I draw the character. At one time, I was obsessed with the Dixon/McDaniel run on Nightwing.
To be totally honest, I actually wasn't trying to give these guys any connection or narrative. I haven't read any of the new Nightwings (Batman and Detective are awesome, though). It's just that any time I see either of them, I instantly think of the other one. I just got done watching Batman Beyond in it's entirety (shameful, I know), and every time Terry took his mask off, all I could think was "Damn, that looks just like Nightwing's new costume!" And the fact that no one else seems to notice just drives me nuts! I guess I just feel like there's a rich narrative there, hiding, just waiting to be exploited. And the fact that Dick never showed up in Batman Beyond only makes it worse.

Batman Beyond was great as far as character design & story, though the dialogue was cheesy at times, the tone was kiddy (I guess it is a cartoon right) & the gadgets were a little too convenient, but then again it is the future. I think what struck me about this the most was the similarity to the "Tomorrow Knight," & if only Nightwing could have ever been in that series, this is exactly how I would picture it! Thanks for sharing your work with the world, we all aim to inspire each other in some way. Also, it's awesome that you reply so quickly! Would be amazing to see these two in motion, fighting side by side; the Dark Knight is fast, but so burly that he is clunky... these two's practiced abilities would compliment each other so well, you'd think it would be a no-brainer to team them up!

That's what they nicknamed the Batman-Beyond Batman, so we have the Dark Knight, the Tomorrow Knight, etc. I just found that out the other day, I thought it was interesting

You can always tell when I have a hard time with a drawing, because it comes out more realistic I love cartooning and animation, so that cartoony look is what I'm shooting for.
