Description
So I was talking with about the virtues and shortcomings of the Arrow TV series, and it got me thinking about how I would handle these characters if I were designing them...so I did. In animated form. For Oliver, I was clearly influenced by one of my all-time favorite movies, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (fun fact: when Kenner produced its line of Robin Hood POT action figures, it used the Green Arrow body from its Super Powers line as a base for Robin!). In Canary's case, I started with the fishnets and worked outward. I wanted something that was based on her classic look, but that looked a little less...ridiculous? I decided to go with a heavy metal/ biker look for her, so that the corset and fishnets would look more like a style choice than a circus outfit.EDIT: Oliver's civilan look and the villainous Merlyn are new additions! Also, brief explanations of some of the design choices....

Merlyn should maybe just be a nickname Oliver uses due to his long, greying beard.

Thanks. Random thought, but it would have given the Arrowverse some much needed humor.

And it would be great to see Ollie regain some of the defiant quips that he's known for!

If they ever made this hopefully it will be closer to the comics than the live action show.

If they made an animated series, Bruce Timm would be an Executive Producer, so they probably wouldn't have a choice lol. Let's face it: DC's animated properties are lightyears ahead of its live action, both in TV and movies. In fact, I would put Young Justice up against any live action show on any of the main broadcast networks.

OK first of all I just want to point out that for all their problems DC live action have some great qualities, and when I say DC I mean Warner Brothers as they make all the creative decisions and own DC, Marvel are their own studio at this point.
I liked the first two Chris Reeves Superman films, I think the Tim Burton Batman films are very imaginative (but to be honest there really wasn't much to compare them to at the time) I liked, Christopher Nolan's first two Batman films (none of the Batman films have been a straight up adaptation each one is like an Elseworlds story, Nolan got the character and history correct but in a real world setting, Burton created a mood and atmosphere for a fantasy world which is kind of appropriate since Gotham is a fake city). But most of these films are in the past and the good ones are few and far between.
As for TV shows Arrow is the worst and DC's Legends of Tomorrow has squandered what potential it had BUT Supergirl is surprisingly good (mostly because it's Supergirl and the best version of Martian Manhunter we've ever seen and the Flash is incredible, yes they do take creative liberties and they redesign costumes and kill villains on a whim but Flash has become my new favourite show. Aside from the above everything DC has done in live action is a joke.
That said DC's animated universe all a spinoff on the absolutely perfect Batman the Animated Series has been excellent across the board including the direct to DVD movies and of course Young Justice, the only thing I think is silly is Teen Titans Go but it was designed for young kids.
On the other hand with the exception of Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Spectacular Spider-Man (both of which were made by Greg Weisman) all of Marvel's animated shows are lame, I think that the '90s Hulk, Spider-Man and X-Men are terrible, Silver Surfer imitated the art of Jack Kirby but wasn't very good. But Marvel's live action movies are so far ahead of any other film franchise (including, in my opinion, Star Wars) that DC is a joke by comparison, but this is a long subject we could spend weeks talking about. Marvel Studios is like a chess grand master and Warner Bros. is like a checkers expert who thinks he's playing the same game as Marvel, they're on such different levels but DC seems oblivious, I almost feel sorry for them.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes was a fantastic show...too bad Disney scrapped it for the crappier Avengers Assemble I enjoyed Spectacular, but I had to check that out because I love Cheeks Galloway's character designs. But man, you didn't like X-men? X-men Evolution? Wolverine and the X-men? (that last one is excellent, btw...Nickelodeon killed it after only one season, unfortunately)
As far as DC's live action shows go, Supergirls is actually my least favorite. I mean, it's exceptional at times, and of course I have to watch it because Superman is in it...but man, Season 2 has been a huge disappointment. Alex's "surprise, I'm a lesbian" arc is about as contrived as any I've seen, and Jimmy Olsen being Guardian is just awful. Guardian having no connection to Cadmus is awful, Cadmus being led by Lex Luthor's dad is awful...just awful. Of course, I'm probably harder on Supergirl than Arrow because I have such a strong affection for the Superman lore, but I definitely feel like there are serious missteps that need to be fixed.

To be honest I hated the '90s X-Men and Spider-Man, I forgot about X-Men Evolution which I thought was quite good but didn't like Wolverine and the X-Men because I thought it was trying too hard and failing to be Evolution but the idea I was trying to express was that Marvel generally does bad animation and good live action and the opposite is true for DC.
Both Marvel and DC movies are bad or good (but different from the comics when good) when made by Fox, Universal, Warners or anyone else, but Marvel movies are superb when made by Marvel Studios themselves (and distributed to cinemas and other formats by Disney). But DC has no equivalent of Marvel Studios, there is no DC Studios, the closest we have is Legendary Pictures (whose works are distributed to cinemas and other formats by Warners). DC also has no Kevin Feige, the closest they have is Zack Snyder who is a gifted cinematographer but can't tell a story to save his life.
I watch Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow for no other reason than to be prepared for when they cross over with Flash and I was watching Supergirl at first for the same reason, but then it got good midway through season one walking the fine line between an Ally McBeal style chick show and a sci-fi comic book show. Just as season one had it's ups and downs season two is at it's low point and I'm hoping it's about to get better, you are right about the whole lesbian subplot that shit was shoehorned in there at the last minute to make the show "topical."
In life I'll take my victories wherever I can find them and at the moment I'm just happy to see Barry run.

Hahaha that last sentence perfectly sums up what it is to be a comic fan watching these shows. When the oval on Barry's chest went from red to white, I cheered. Little victories.
