Anyway. One of the methods I use for backgrounds.

Sorry about the massive file size. Hope it helps someone.

Whoa! I had no idea just how much work was behind the finished piece. It is a gift to all digital artists and a tribute to your hard work and well-earned skill.

Except that on the step where you begin working on the road, you leave out the last word in the sentence. "Shade it according to the main lightsource in the".

But really, this is gonna help people. I learned from it too, but I can't be helped besides.

Cosmiksquirel [2006-12-02 21:23:27 +0000 UTC]

this is seriuosly awesome. what kind of brush did you use for the buildings and the shadings next to the curb? it looks some kind of grainy and i love it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GearOtter In reply to Cosmiksquirel [2006-12-03 07:07:56 +0000 UTC]

It's just your standard brush, set to an opacity of about 50-60% and with the noise filter applied to it after its colored.

For the curb its the same deal, only I lightly ran the sharpen tool over it to pick out the details and give it a rougher feel.

Thanks for the comment!

Tex777 [2006-12-02 16:17:34 +0000 UTC]

That is awesome. I'm going to have to try this. Question: On the fourth panel I think it is, the buildings have some grain, do you add noise to your brushes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GearOtter In reply to Tex777 [2006-12-03 07:36:10 +0000 UTC]

Naw, I just use the standard brush, set so it's a touch transparent and then use the noise filter. Afterwards, depending on how fuzzy the layer still is, I'll lightly touch it up with the sharpen tool.

And thank-ye! I hope it helps you.

I'm terrible with making backgrounds at the last minute, which inevitably means I'll churn out something simple and well... Simple.

And I'm glad you find it useful!

That's really nice of you to upload this, and brave, methinks. I'd love to make tutorials but I'm so scared of people stealing from me. As silly as it sounds, it'd feel as though I'm handing my skill out to everyone. I can't get over the anxiety of that happening.

For some reason only half of this is loading at the moment. o.O Maybe my internet is being stubborn again.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GearOtter In reply to AmzarahGunn [2006-12-03 07:39:32 +0000 UTC]

I figure I might aswell give back into the community what I've taken; tutorials, brushes, etcetc.

But I completely understand where you're coming from too.

And that's odd it isn't fully loading for you... It could be DevArt aswell.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AmzarahGunn In reply to GearOtter [2006-12-03 07:41:38 +0000 UTC]

It loaded eventually, actually. I think it was my computer being slow.

I really admire how much detail you put into your backgrounds...it's so...time consuming, eep. Well done.
