It's not a dumb question at all ^^ Ball jointed dolls are dolls created by artists (generally in Asia, mostly South Korea but there are some artists in Europe and the US who've done quite well) or small companies that are cast in resin (a kind of plastic) and strung together with elastic. They're hand made to order and generally will come naked, bald and blank. A large part of collecting them is the customization aspect since they're intended to basically become what ever you want them to be. With that in mind most of use them to shell our original characters.
For me the draw of them is as subjects for my photography, I just love shooting with them.

The FAQ
Please bare in mind that this FAQ is intended to answer questions that I get asked regularly about my own dolls. While I have been in the hobby for a few years now I can't claim to know everything there is to know about BJDs, especially when it comes to companies I have little to no personal interest in. If you do have general questions about BJDs rather than ones specific to my photography or my dolls please do a search over on DOA ( http://www.denofangels.com/forums/index.php ) first. I will attempt to answer any questions I can but please understand I never intended this as a question and answer about the hobby or doll buying in general.
If the below doesn't answer your question then please feel  that explains it all in more detail ^^

Thank you so much! I had seen a lot of BJD photographers around Deviantart, and it seemed like something I'd be interested in- I understand it now, thank you!
Ah, resin, I see! I actually collect Breyer horse models, which are realistic resin models handcrafted and handpainted. A lot of people customize them by repainting them and adding things like wings, horns, etc. I am just beginning to customize myself

I'll have to look into this further, it seems to be something I may enjoy getting into- I have some OCs that would work really well for this kind of thing......... ^^
