Description And here we have yet another half-baked attempt to color an impressive piece of concept art from Tri-Star's aborted 1994 Godzilla film. For more information regarding that ill-fated project, I must once again recommend ( [link] ) and ( [link] ).

Two aspects of this photo-edit may seem especially off: (a) the portion of hide between each row of dorsal fins, which I hastily added an extra layer of charcoal gray to, and (b) the outer border of Big G's body. For no sane reason, I'd originally filled that blank white space with a hideous neon-green shade, which bled somewhat into the lineart after I saved the image. Going back in to undo that garish effect was fairly aggravating.

EDIT: Recently noticed I'd missed a patch o' green here & there (especially on the image's lower-right corner); went back in & rectified that bit o' slop.

Once again, proper props:

Godzilla (C) Toho Co. Ltd.

Original concept artwork (C) Ricardo Delgado.

Quick & dirty recolor (C) me.

Seems your more of the fan type than thought than just only your avatar showed Geek, damn don't care what you say but this is hands down is one kick ass of a drawing with the Gman in it. o0o

Props and more props think should go to your wicked handling of some great coloring lad, think for sure to get this good as you've managed on this pic you really must have taken some manner of art class to know the way the skin literally looks that of the to the original with such realism done on the scales!

Bold work around the eyes for the obvious part, to be true they were the first thing that caught my attention and like that familiar kind of glow this guy always has, much better than the cartoon type eyes and definitely showing a level of badass and some serious power within kind of deal.

Additional credit should mention goes to how amazingly rounded and perfect the claws look. They seem to have that smooth and refined look that you capture so well with the lighting or shining on edges and they arch just ideally how they dig themselves into the ground or give off that nice high arch, damn.

Give you credit to have taken alot more time than seen some people achieve with the fins and even the way you try and show their familiar and almost crystallized method really do like and heck even reminds me a bit of Space Godzilla, thumbs up man.

Last but not least a cheers again to the way the scales and skin is done. While the lines of the pic itself show an incredible perspective from Godzilla trying to pounce your ass, your varied shades of the charcoal grey to lighten up around the mouth or dark on the edges of the joints, back, etc show a great level of professionalism and Godzilla help if you say no to that, lol.

Long story short this is just out and out badass Geek, here's hoping your might try and go for a few more colored pieces in the coming years and if so can only expect them to be just as astonishing as this one.

Tim, the enthusiasm's much appreciated, but trust me when I say that most of the 'shading' effect is due to the original artist. This was originally a black-and-white piece, but he'd laid down such an elaborate level of dark scale detail that coating it in charcoal grey was a snap once I worked out how to color it in with the (relatively) ancient program at my disposal. Ditto with the talons: I just laid on an extra layer of flat black while taking care to leave the original 'glossy' bits untouched.

Anyhoo, I'm very much satisfied with the eyes; while I'm not at all averse to Big G playing the hero now & again, he oughta look imposing by default, and that crimson/yellow 'glow' forms a nifty contrast with dem dark & bony skin/fin-tones.

Apologies to any offense might have laid down with the comment there Geekspace and anything sorry to hear you didn't play as big a part in this piece as this crab would had hoped. Will say at least you seem more than intelligent enough to figure this out and curious as to what pieces you have fully worked on from A to Z.

Oh yes, always thank the role of the ominous glow of yellow to play a spooky role, heck that's the one color that seems to pop up whenever think about the Little Sisters, lol.

And your into the idea of the G being a hero too eh? Awesome!

No worries, man-I just wanted to make it clear that the linework here is leaps & bounds beyond my own level. Outside the odd coloration & a high-school art class, all I've ever produced art-wise is the odd pen/pencil doodle, as demonstrated in my Scraps section here.

And yeah, what Big G's (anti-)heroic stints may lack in metaphorical gravitas, they more than make up in blistering action. Big G's character has proven mutable (and flexible) enough that not every series entry need be dark, dire SRS BSNS.

Well even then you at least have a detailed eye and mind to describe and pick it apart, that's definitely something of an artists stirring inside, not kidding. Besides wasn't anything close to right now when first picked up a pencil, sure nobody here was. ^o^

Dude your just awesome, especially on that last part. Still wish we could see more of the guy and heck this long with a good Godzilla movie to cheer on, seriously am in demand for more of that model destroying badass, lol.

Opps meant to correct the mistake but posted it instead!!! Doh!

The pose Its almost reminiscent of a cat playing with a toy, and yet it still has that sense of gigantic even though there is no other items to gauge scale from. Just looking at the image you can see that it works and does the job its meant to , depict Godzilla in a pose, and i love how much attention to detail and how knowledgable you are about the smallest thing, i didnt even notice or care about the extra bumps on his back yet its picked upon.
I loved finding the fossil photographs in your gallery i was drawing a dino skeleton and your photos helped me work out some of the bone placements and joints, cheers for that.
Brief emailing on the go.

I'm just glad to know anything posted hereabouts was of use to actual artists-though keep in mind, all I did to this particular image was color it. And hey, we all mis-post from time to time.

Yeah, you don't see perspective like this too often with Big G. For more excruciatingly-detailed work by the actual artist, look up Ricardo Delgado's dino-centric "Age of Reptiles" series.

Could be an armored division, could be a napping Gamera, could be Devlin & Emmerich (the dudes behind the '98 film). Your guess is as good as mine.

Well, as noted elsewhere, all I did was color these...subsequent tweaking aside, I believe they took roughly a day or two apiece. Trust me-when it comes to monstrous art (and artists) on this site, you ain't seen nuthin' yet.

We have a word for things like that. What was it again? Tip of my tongue.... oh, yeah! Badass!! Nicely done color. Would've loved to see that design used.

Shame to think about what we got instead... -.-

Is it just me or does Godzilla's neck have two humps in it?

I'm fairly sure those are supposed to be his shoulders...that perspective & limb placement sort of warps the visual profile they would normally present. Unorthodox pose, but I believe it conveys a fine sense of flexibility.

I have to agree with TT here-aside from the little bits you mentioned, this is another really good color job.

Well, thanks again, Scatha. Not sure what I'll put up here next, although I do have a ton of kaiju-profiles from an old forum-based collaborative project. However, I'm somewhat wary of posting 'em due to a lack of precise memory regarding the board members who contributed to each profile (and would therefore deserve credit).

Aside from the few flaws you noted in the comments, this is still a damn solid coloring job. The eyes are particularly well done in this one - they almost seem to glow. I also really like the shiny look you gave to his claws - which is a really good detail to have considering they're one of the main focuses in this drawing. Good job!

geekspace In reply to TyrantisTerror [2009-02-22 04:51:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, those glossy cuticles were part of Delgado's original piece; all I did was try to work around the gleaming bits when adding solid black to the talons. As for the eyes, they are rather accidentally cool-I tried to minimize the red cornea for some perspective, and it apparently blended into the golden bit when I saved.

Thanks for the accolades, Ty.
