Description Sex: Male, female

Species: Mutated parasitic wasp

Location of Origin: Phosphora Exclusion Zone

Date Encountered: February 10th, 1980

Height: 4 meters (13ft)

Weight: 45 metric tons

Threat level: Medium

Aggression level: Low

Known mutations:

- Parasitic sting able to inject larva into victims. After a short period of time, the larva will hatch inside the victim and begin literally eating them from the inside out. Once fully mature, the adult will burst out of the dead victim's abdomen. Only the females possess the ability to parasitize victims, but males can still use their stingers as offensive weapons.

- Sharp claws on each leg that can firmly grasp victims or be used as slashing weapons.

- Serrated mandibles can be used to bite and hold prey.

History:

The creatures that would come to be known as "The Flying Terror" were first identified in the Phosphora Exclusion Zone not by their physical appearance, but by the trail of bodies they left behind. Such desiccated cadavers would begin cropping up on November 16th. Recon teams sent into the EZ found dead mutated wildlife hollowed out and with ruptured abdomens. Evidence suggested that something literally ate it's way out of the animal's body and is now out in the wilderness. A total of 13 corpses with this cause of death were found throughout the EZ, leading to concern that a large-scale mutant maybe on the loose. This news resulted in the Soviet Army bringing their robotic superweapon, Tsar-1, to alert status yellow. It wouldn't be until four months later when the next sighting would occur, and this time there was an actual creature reported. Sightings by recon teams described a large insect-like mutant with long legs and a stinger-tipped abdomen, but the height at which the creature flew made it difficult to make out any specific detail. Tsar-1 was brought up to alert status red days later and was deployed to deal with the creatures before they could escape the EZ. In truth however, these new mutants were already dwindling in number due to a larger super-predator in the area that was feeding on them. This beast, known eventually as "The Tunneler" was a gigantic mutant mole that developed a hunting strategy similar to an antlion: it would dig a large pit and wait at the bottom with it's mouth open. It's tongue would act as a decoy and move as if it were a struggling animal. One of these Flying Terrors would fly down in an attempt to parasitize the would-be victim, only to be immediately seized by The Tunneler's jaws and pulled underground.

Constant predation by The Tunneler had reduced the population of these mutants from around 13 to only 3. All 3 of these surviving mutants would eventually relocate to the abandoned city of Volodarsk in order to avoid The Tunneler. However their days were numbered, as shortly after relocating to this refuge, Tsar-1 was deployed into the desolate city to exterminate the mutants. The mutant wasps went about their daily business until one of them detected a herd of mutated deer taking refuge in a crumbling warehouse. Swooping in the for the kill, the herd was suddenly spooked by the arrival of Tsar-1, causing them to scatter. The mutant managed to snatch one of the creatures in it's clawed limbs and impale it with it's stinger. The grotesque appendage flexed and contracted as it injected it's larva into the still-struggling deer before finally releasing it from it's grasp to flee. The insect circled around and landed on the roof of another warehouse facing the combat robot. The hideous creature's antennae twitched with the influx of new sensory information. The being standing before it was cold and lifeless like the buildings around it, yet it was clearly "alive" as it was moving mere moments ago. The being moved again, raising one of it's arms and pointing it directly at the insect. The creature still did not know how to respond to such a bizarre entity, and it would never get the chance: with a thundering roar and rapid flashes of light, the creature's entire body as well as the building it was standing on came apart under a volley of explosive projectiles.

The creature was so thoroughly annihilated that what little remained of it was almost indistinguishable from the rubble. However upon death, the insect's body released pheromones that alerted to other nearby members of it's kind. The remaining two sprung into action immediately. In unison, the mutants swooped in and grabbed the metallic entity by the shoulders and used their strength and momentum to pull it to the ground. The unliving being attempted to fight back, but the sudden and violent attack caused it's shots to go wide. The metallic entity hit the ground with a quaking thud that shook the snow off of any nearby objects. One of the creatures which was shaded yellow and black, landed on the robot's chest and readied it's stinger. Yet when it struck, the insect found it's stinger could not penetrate the skin of it's enemy. In fact, it seemed that it couldn't even inflict anything other than very superficial damage. The creature then attempted to use it's claws to tear and slash at the robot's head but found these weapons similarly ineffective against this enemy's seemingly impenetrable skin. The robot rose to it's feet, forcing the mutant insect off of it, but the abomination re-engaged immediately. With it's legs spread wide to grab ahold of the mech once more, the robot swung on of it's large cannon arms and batted the insect away. The blow send the creature spiraling through the air, the world around it spinning violently as it attempted to regain control of it's flight. It did so just in the nick of time, as it was on a collision course with the side of a building that would have surely crippled it. Instead, this one got away with merely grazing the edge of the roof.

Suddenly a third insect, colored a dazzling metallic blue, attached itself to the robot's back and clamped down on one of the mech's neck pistons with it's pointed mandibles. The creature's mouthparts, which were capable of holding down struggling prey larger than it, found themselves powerless to harm the metallic being as they could inflict but mere scratches on the military-grade metal. In tandem, the wasp also attempted to use it's stinger to repeatedly stab the robot in the spine but found it too was unable to hurt it. The yellow mutant circled back around and once again latched itself onto the robot's front, positioning itself upside down so it could use it's stinger to repeatedly stab the robot in it's narrow red visor. Each strike succeeded in causing the video feed from the robot to flicker, but was otherwise unable to damage the thick protective glass covering the robot's optics. The mutants continued their assault: if they couldn't force the creature to carry their young, they could at least kill it. The metallic being's body suddenly went limp and it's bright red visor turned a dim maroon. From within the robot's armored shell, the insects could feel the vibrations of something happening within their enemy. Without warning,  a powerful wave of electrical energy washed over the robot's metallic surface like flowing water. The voltage was so high that it caused the mutant's bodies to instantly burst into flames. The creatures were alive just long enough to feel the electric shock before they were charred to a crisp.

Once the ordeal was over, their steaming charred husks slipped off the robot's bodies and landed on the show covered ground. Tsar-1 had successfully exterminated it's first mutant threat, scoring 3 confirmed kills on it's first outing. However this was not to be the end of The Flying Terror: the mutated deer that one of the mutants parasitized earlier began to feel ill, it's strength quickly fading. The animal feel behind the rest of it's herd and took refuge below a large tree. The animal howled in pain as something visibly moved inside it's abdomen. Soon, The Flying Terror would be born again...
