Description
Hello everyone! So since activity in regards to making maps has been rather low, I've decided to do a fun Alternate History scenario. It involves a set of points of divergence:1. Max Stirner's philosophy known as Egoism becomes more popular and thus it becomes just as popular as Marxism, creating a rivalry between the two radical ideologies.
2. The CSA wins the American Civil War, but ends the slave economy out of necessity, though this results in racial segregation on the one hand and the rise of the KKK on the other, albeit with an anti-elitist flavor added to its white supremacist views. Since the South's victory, it wasted no time in rapidly industrializing itself in order to maintain its newly gained independence.
3. The Fashoda incident on July 1898 turns violent, resulting in a bitter colonial conflict in Africa between Britain and France, forcing the former to side with Germany; and although the incident swiftly comes to an end with German and US intervention, this sours the relationship between Britain and France, pressuring the latter to further militarize itself and, in the process, become more increasingly authoritarian, anti-British, and anti-German.
4. WW I erupts between the Entente (France, Italy, CSA, Russia, Serbia, Romania, Sweden, Greece) and the Central Powers (USA, Britain, Germany, Denmark, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, the Ottomans, Japan) with the latter eventually winning in the bloody conflict in 1917.
5. The Russian Civil War still occurs and despite Anglo-German intervention in favor of the otherwise disorganized Whites, the Bolsheviks still maintain power thanks to rising Socialist, Marxist and Egoist rebellions occuring across Europe with the suprising exception of Germany, France, and Austria-Hungary.
6. Britain is forced to trade away a few of its African colonies to Germany in exchange for aid in helping them crush socialist rebels that have arisen as a result of mass coal mining strikes and street riots. Italy reluctantly gets help too, though they still long for revenge on the Austrians.
7. Utah, under Mormon influence, votes to secede from the union around 1931, by the US is to busy trying to recover from the Great Depression. Also, the US now has three dominant parties that would ultimately define its political makeup in the years that follow it: the conservative of the Democrats, the liberals of the Republicans, and the Socialist Party of America.
8. Stalin seizes power like in OTL whereas the ideology of National Corporatism (aka: Fascism) emerges across the 1920's and 1930's with the rise of charismatic dictators such as Benito Mussolini, Marcel Bucard, Birger Furugård, and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu. But among them is Herbert W. Armstrong, who seizes power through rousing speeches, theistic evolution, social Darwinism, anti-black sentiment, antisemitism, and the promotion of the pseudohistorical theory known as British Israelism, transforming the CSA into this timeline's equivalent of Nazi Germany, albiet with a more strongly Christian nationalist flavor. He establishes the Holy Israelite Church of Saint Charles Darwin once he gains power in 1924 and declares it the official state religion, proclaiming himself as “God’s chosen prophet” destined to bring about the evolutionary ascension of the Anglo-Saxon “race.” By June 6th, 1926, he declares all other Christian denominations are “heretical followers of Satan” and therefore deems them enemies of the state. In the eyes of the Pope, Herbert W. Armstrong is the biblical Antichrist long feared by many across Christendom.
9. Ireland still gains its independence as it did in OTL, except under a non-Marxist, authoritarian socialist regime based on a radical interpretation of Christianity.
10. The Ottoman Empire, no longer the Sick Man of Europe, begins to modernize itself rapidly while modifying its Islamic traditions to keep up with the times. Plus, Armenia is an ultranationalist state that seeks revenge on the Turks for the Armenian Genocide, but is too weak to do anything as its oppressors hold a tight leash on it.
11. Despite its victory in WW I, a rabid antisemite and civil engineer named Gottfried Feder gains a large following and forms the German National Freedom Party and conspires with Prince August Wilhelm of Prussia to influence the dying Kaiser Wilhelm II into granting emergency powers and declare the latter of the two as his heir, thus paving a way for the two to fulfill their insane, pan-German dreams of world domination. However, they are met in competition with other extremist groups occurring Germany as a result of the 1929 London Stock Market Crash, including Marxists, Egoists, and National Bolsheviks (Basically, Marxist-Leninists with more ultranationalist tendencies). This leads Crown Prince Wilhelm to suspect that there is a conspiracy and urges his father of his brother’s plans. With this in mind, he makes a secret coalition with Alfred Hugenberg, Gustav Stresemann, and Kuno von Westarp to form a coalition in the future.
12. Relations between Britain and Germany have soured with the former struggling to keep its empire together. Rhodesia, after a few disputes with the Westminster government and a growing fear of creeping German influence its decisions, declares independence and forms a republican form of government run by a wealthy white elite.
13. There exists an international, underground Egoist movement that seeks to ignite the revolution in order to rid the world of “spooks” (ex. religion, the state, Marxism, hierarchy, nationalism, capitalism) and establish a worldwide Union of Egoists, a voluntary and non-systematic association based on a relation between egoists which is continually renewed by all parties' support through an act of will. The Union requires that all parties participate out of a conscious egoism. If one party silently finds themselves to be suffering, but puts up and keeps the appearance, the union has degenerated into something else. In terms of economics, this would involve a free-market economy of sorts, but without either a capitalist or working class to seize the means of production.
14. In terms of culture, the United States is influenced by British and Prussian traditions and custom, along with an increasingly Catholic outlook due to immigration from Ireland and Southern Europe whereas the CSA becomes a predominately Anglo-Saxon society with some influences of French culture. For example, the US army adopts the German-styled stahlhelm whereas the CS army adopts the same style as the Adrian helmet from France. Both, however, have adopted the Pickelhaube from Germany for their ceremonial and police uniforms. Furthermore, Prohibition in the North, making it much difficult for the US government to establish law and order. There also exists public paranoia over the growing spread of Marxist and Egoist thinking that sometimes results in government-sponsored witch hunts. Even the Socialist Party of America has distanced itself from Marxism and instead promotes a free-market socialist economy.
15. Winston Churchill is more ultranationalist and authoritarian than in OTL, but is just as hostile towards Fascism as he is with Communism, Egoism, and Socialism. Seeing that the British Empire is on the brink of collapse, he forms the United British Revival Party in 1927, dedicated to restoring her to her former glory and maintain the already fragile balance of power with an anti-German policy. He also promotes economic liberalism while pushing for a stronger military, a renewed faith in traditional values, and, if necessary, a full embargo on both Germany and France, the latter of which he sees as Britain’s traditional enemy.
16. Oswald Moseley never gets involved into Fascism and remains a member of the Labor Party. On the other hand, Rotha Lintorn-Orman and her British Fascists become a major political force, much to Churchill’s distress, and stress for a war against Germany, Japan, Austria-Hungary, the Soviet Union, and the United States and form an unholy alliance with France. On the left side of the political turmoil, Charles Sabini and his mobsters, influenced by the illegalist interpretation of Egoist ideology, establish a secret revolutionary group known as the British Sons of Liberty with the intent on assassinating the royal family, commit terrorist bombings on Westminster, and spark a civil war to take over the island nation.
17. Austria-Hungary faces a crisis within itself as many of the Czechs, Slovaks, Romanians, Italians, Poles, Hungarians, and Croats threaten to split the Habsburg empire, further intensified by growing numbers of Marxists, Fascists, and Egoists in its ranks. Engelburt Dollfuss criticizes the predominately Social Democratic government and accuses it of being too spinelessly incompetent to deal with the crisis. In Vienna, a lone veteran by the name of Adolf Hitler is killed five days after publishing his war memoir in 1926, which becomes a bestseller across Europe. The killer is revealed to be a member of the Austrian Egoist Brotherhood, leading to government crackdowns across the realm, though these attempts only increase the number of egoists.
18. Albert Einstein flees to the Ottoman Empire as Europe walks closer towards the brink of another war. There, the sultan, impressed by Einstein’s research, calls upon a secret project that could potentially change the world forever. Meanwhile, Mongolia, led by Roman von Ungern-Sternberg, becomes a safe haven for the remnants of the White Army, though this leads to ethnic tensions between the Mongols and ethnic Russians, especially over matters of religion.
19. Mussolini forms closer ties with Bucard as both of the two share great resentment towards Germany and Britain. Mussolini dreams of restoring the ancient Roman Empire whereas Bucard looks into the lives and achievements of Charlemange and Napoleon in order to reclaim what he perceives as France’s rightful clay (Alsace-Lorraine, Luxembourg, Belgium, Rhineland). Within France, its ruling party, the Mouvement franciste, had absorbed the Ligue des Patriotes and the pro-monarchist Action française and proclaimed Prince Jean, Duke of Guise as the new ruling monarch, though he is merely a puppet to the dictator’s whim. Furthermore, antisemitic laws are enforced across France and its remaining colonial holdings, along with a racial eugenics program to preserve the “Gallo-Roman master race.”
20. By 1932, very few Mormons, Catholics, atheists, and Evangelicals remain within the South either because they fled or, for the most part, have been seduced and converted by the state religion of Armstrong’s twisted version of Christianity. The Jews, Slavic immigrants, Native Americans, and blacks who remained are rounded up and sent into death camps in a way that is shockingly similar to the Holocaust of OTL. Armstrong justified these atrocities by citing verses from the Bible while insisting that since Jews were the “hybrid descendants” of Neanderthal and other archaic humans who make up the “Pre-Adamics,” they are to be seen as “soulless subhumans” at the bottom of the evolutionary hierarchy of the “races.” To the outside world’s horror, an overwhelming majority of the South’s white population cheered on in praise for what was obviously a cruel excuse for genocide. Even Bucard and Mussolini are deeply disturbed by this and the only people in Europe who seem to agree with Armstrong are the Romanian Iron Guard, who waste no time in persecution the Jews and gypsies in their own country. The Irish are deemed “fellow Anglo-Saxons,” but can only have the same privileges if they recant their Catholic beliefs.
21. To make matters worse, Herbet W. Armstrong, backed by his Propaganda Minister Robert Henry Best, had decreed that the mentally disabled are forever cursed by God as punishment for the sin of their parents and the only way for them to make amends are to have their “cursed” children sacrificed by sending them to euthanasia centers as a test of faith, using the story of Abraham’s attempted sacrifice of Isaac as a twisted inspiration. Eventually, this leads to the rise of “biblical eugenics” with the purpose of ensuring the purity of the Anglo-Saxon “race.”
22. Franklin D. Roosevelt succumbs to his polio and Upton Sinclair of the Socialists wins the election of 1932, becoming the first member of the Socialist Party of America to be voted into the office of President of the United States. Much like Prime Minister Chamberlain of OTL, he wishes to use appeasement as a means to dissuade the Armstrongist South from going down the path to war. However, this move is heavily criticized by exiled Governor of Louisiana, Huey Long, who accuses him of being too soft towards the Confederates, fearing that war between the two Americas is inevitable. The Wisconsin-born Gerald L. K. Smith, a sympathizer to Armstrong’s regime, forms the American Redemption League in an attempt to persuade people within the states of Kentucky, West Virginia, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona to secede and incorporate themselves into the CSA before the conflict would occur. While it failed to obtain its main goal, it did cripple people’s faith in the already corrupt, incompetent, crippled US government.
23. Factions within the British Isles begins to emerge as the incompetence of the Westminster government begins to show cracks across the dying Empire. Churchill's Revivalists gain popularity and are the most likely to gain control of the government as Communists, Fascists, Egoists, and Scottish independence movements threaten to destroy the last vestiges of imperial glory within the British Isles. Led by the intellectual Philip Spratt, the British Communist Party seeks to overthrow the royal family and establish a people's socialist republic across the island and end the British Empire's existence, leading to a wave of decolonization.
The top map shows the colonies and puppet states given their own colors, the second incorporates them into the very empires they belong to (ex. Canada is under British rule), and the third shows the different ideologies that all the countries of the world belong to as of the year 1935.
Hope you enjoy it.
