A Dragon Age 2 fanart. Merrill is one of my favourite characters in DA series, she is such a sweetie
A bit sad that there isn't many fanart of her and fem Hawke. Anyway, I'm rambling again ain't I?

Well, when I said "androgynous", I meant that you can gender-flip any love interest in DA2 and their romance arc would play out pretty much the same way IMO. ^^

I think partly because Sebastian appears too late into the game to be considered "family", I find him pretty useless (but he looks good though). Sebastian reminds me of Anders pre-DA2 (he looks like a bum in the second game

Yeah, joining in Act II is his biggest flaw. But also... I dunno, he just isn't fitting in. Everyone else is loyal to Hawke, but he is loyal to the Chantry, so that may be why.

Carver died in my playthrough, so I got Bethany to dote on. The girl is even cuter than Merrill at times. >__<

Please do. ^__^ Having a little sister like Bethany (even if only virtual) would improve anyone's life. She is by far the most reasonable and nicest NPC in the game, and also, she and Merrill were the two main reasons I sided with the Mages in the end, even though I played as a Warrior with Templar specialization.

Yeah but the problem is I like being Mage so much haha. I sided with the Templars on my first play-through just to see how it's like (I like the Mage side better), in the end after I killed Orsino, Meredith turned to me and said "Hey, you are a mage as well. Kill!!" so I killed her as well.

I like DA2 more than DAO, too, even though I admit that DAO is technically superior. Maybe that's because the themes of having to make a living in a foreign city and losing family members are very familiar to me.

I think hardcore gamers usually enjoy DAO a bit more, I struggled a bit with DAO but not DA2. Strange, I'm related to the main story as well, moving to a foreign city, losing friends & family blah blah blah haha

Back on topic, yes, I think DAO is more about gameplay and DA2 is more about story and characters. The writers said in one interview that they tried to subvert BioWare's usual story formula in every way in DA2, and that they succeeded, which is great if you ask me. ^^

Well no one died fortunately 
DAO has a very difficult combat system, plus my Grey Warden barely talks at all so it takes the immersion away from the game :/ I still don't know why a lot people hate DA2

I don't think DAO was that difficult, but then again, I grew up on Dungeons & Dragons.
As for why so many hate DA2, I have a personal theory that it has nothing to do with objective flaws of the game or even many players' personal homophobia (which is an oft-cited argument). I think it is mainly caused by the fact that there are no endings that can be considered inspiring or happy in DA2. In DAO, you could have both depressing endings (Warden or Alistair dies) and inspiring ones (Loghain redeems himself or everyone lives), and ditto in DAA. But in DA2, you lose everything you worked long and hard to achieve either way, which is always frustrating. Some players can see past it and admire the game's good aspects, while others cannot and look for pretexts to dislike it. ^^
Btw, it's the same situation with Mass Effect series. ME1 had a very inspiring ending, ME2 even more so, but ME3 inevitably ends in tragedy for Shepard, which is even more frustrating than Hawke's tragedies, because you can import the same Shep from ME1/2.

Having just get back to gaming for a long period of time, I'd rather take it easy for now.
Yeah I find your answer pretty satisfying, Hawke went from zero to hero then zero again, plus she lost all of her close family (except for her uncle) in the process, it's pretty hard to take, I don't dislike DA2 ending as much as I dislike ME3 ending. Maybe Bioware writers are sadists hahaha
