Description

Guys...

I did it.
I finally did it.

I GOT A SURFACE PRO 3!!!

Oh my gosh, this thing is wicked cool!  I can't believe all the things it can do...

It was a bit of a challenge finding a piece of software to go with it, though, since Microsoft switched from Wacom to N-Trig for their 3rd generation Surface.  There's only three drawing programs out there that boast compatibility with N-Trig technology.  Sketchbook Pro works well for initial sketches and it has awesome shape templates, but I didn't like how it did lineart.  Adobe Photoshop does lineart really well, but it doesn't have a built-in brush stabilizer.  (Though there is a stabilizer plug-in available for purchase, but using it means losing pen pressure sensitivity.)  Finally, there's Manga Studio... and it wins.  Great pencils for sketching, awesome pens for lineart, all sorts of rulers for perfectly straight lines and round ellipses/curves, and figure guides out the wazoo, not to mention an awesome stabilizer.  Colouring will take some getting used to, but it's pretty diverse in its options.

Anyway, this drawing was done from start to finish all in Clip Studio Pro (Manga Studio) on my Surface Pro 3.  It took me all day.  ALL.  DAY. Hopefully the process will speed up for future drawings.  As for why it's Blossom surfing... I just picked an idea that came to mind that I liked and went with it.  (Heh, I guess you could say this is what Blossom did after she left the tutorial. )

Who knows? Maybe she left to go get changed but when she saw the waves at a beach she was probably like: "I think I'll stay in my swimsuit for a little longer..." then she probably grabbed her surf board and here she is now. Huh? Am I right or am I rrrright?

*GASP*
*Ahem!* Excuse me for my state of shock. This is such a beautiful piece! What
first caught my eye was the different shading on Blossom. She looks a bit shiny.
And it looks wonderful!!! But my favorite thing is the wave. Like, it looks wonderful!
I will say you could have added a bit more white color to the piece, but overall, it looks so
beautiful!! >w< I can't wait to see what else you have in store for us with that new program!
Keep up the awesome work, Senpai!

*revives you* Bloom!~ No more lying down for you! You just got back from vaycay, girl.

Aw, thank you!  It's funny you mention her being shiny, because I did my usual dark shading first, and the MOMENT, the INSTANT I added that swipe of white watercolour for the shine, my eyes said, "YES! That's what I've been waiting for!" It looked so real!  I will definitely use that again.

The wave was so much fun, drawing backgrounds was one of the biggest things I was looking forward to when I got a touchscreen tablet.  It's something you just can't replicate with mouse and keyboard... And yes, I should have added some white splash under the surfboard I was just so happy when the shading started looking good that I didn't think to go back.

Don't worry; there'll be lots more to come!

I am! And I'm slowly but surely learning its ins and outs.
The waves were the most fun part! (That and the sun reflections )

Aw, thank you! I'm glad you like my art.  No need to be shy; I like talking about my process!

The waves took some time to finalize, but the most important thing to remember is to draw the farthest thing first (so the closest things, the things on top, get drawn last.)  I started with the general shape of the large crests of water, working from right to left (again, back to front) in a continuous candy cane-shape stroke.  Then, I emphasized two of the wave sections by making a couple of dark blue strokes, which get blended to their left (so the right sides stay crisp).  Next, I drew the curled tips of water by first filling in the light blue (again, right to left) and then outlining them with white.  Finally, these white and blue strokes get mixed together with the blend and finger smear tools, so it looks frothy.  Add a few stray trickles of water for a motion effect, and bam!  Surf's up!

Hope that helps!
