Description So this is my first deviantART gallery post. It's pretty indicative of what I do when left to my own devices. I start with a pencil drawing, scan it in, and then do this digital chiaroscuro thing to it.

There's really no story behind this illustration. I just wanted to draw a crotchety old alchemist and his apprentice who's obviously had enough of the old man's constant rambling about animal innards and such.

Excellent character designs! I love the looks on the faces of these two. They really do seem to have life and history, though you claim they just sort of popped into your head for a single drawing.

The details are wonderful- I love the look of the room that these two are in. There is so much texture around the place: wood, stone, fur, feather, and wax. - And the light from the fireplace and the candles creates a very believable light-source.

Great character designs. Great colors. Great detail. And great realistic touches to a cartoonish drawing.

This is beautiful. I know you said there's no story behind it. But it's as if the pic WANTS to tell a story. That's the beauty of it. If that makes any sense.

You know what the first word out of my mouth was? "Bloody" and the second was "hell," the next three were "that is amazing!"

I just saw this as a Daily Deviation and I can see why already! Your attention to detail is amazing, and the alchemist looks so deep, like I could tell his whole personality from this picture!

Definitely a favourite, and a watch.

I'm sure someone's mentioned this, but that's one tough bastard to be able to hold a boiling cauldron bare-handed like that.

Other than that, the detail and everything is excellent!

I never thought of it as boiling.....just sort of oozing and giving off noxious vapors. Otherwise, yeah, you're right, that would be quite a feat.

Your attention to detail is lovely, things like the angle of the slop in the cauldron and the bend in the alchemist's finger on the book really bring it to life. The only thing I might say is that compared to the candle flames the fire looks rather rushed and unconvincing, and the mantelpiece looks slightly to narrow for the cat. However with those aside it is wonderful.

On the subject of the cat...I used to see my cat lie down on some things I thought were too small for a rat, let alone her fat butt. LOL!

That cat is going to fall off the hearth and become dinner.

I really love the lighting in this, it makes the picture feel very warm and inviting, and helps give a better feeling to what the character's may be thinking.

For example, the boy is probably rolling his eyes as he's being lectured/rambled at for the lighting is too poor to read by, and the alchemist is not even looking at his book; perhaps he knows/thinks the alchemist is just making things up to sound important, or the alchemist simply knows the book by heart.

I also love the noses of both characters, they're very fitting.

Great job, George!

It's so great that you pay special attention to it. I've seen a lot of amazing artists who always leave it as an afterthought. It really gives your picture character! :3
