Description As I promised to some of the people here, I'm releasing the first tutorial here.

This is the tutorial for how to do soft cell shading on Photoshop, based on my experience.

The version of Photoshop used in the tutorial is 6. If you use later versions, names of tools/modes and/or allocation of shortcut keys might be different.
I'm working on Windows, so if you use Mac please change these notations as: Ctrl to Command, Alt to Option.

I just hope it helps you.

Ummm, excuse me... This may seem silly, but I just can't get the lineart-color-change. I'm a lil stuck here... I have cs3, does that make a big difference on that sub-step? O.o

if you used an example besides manga it would be better. Manga style is overused.

I have a question on stage one... If the layer is locked how do you use the brush on that layer?

and im assuming the kanji layer is the original picture, and the line is the trace? am i right or am i way off...idk im a bit confused but open to learn.

can you help me please?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

getty In reply to Myeternalsin [2008-10-26 01:01:18 +0000 UTC]

I'm not saying to lock the layer. I'm saying to lock the transparancy of the layer.

That's really helpful, I just got a question, can dodge be used on a separate layer? I am pretty sure I'll use too much of it, and I don't want to ruin the whole pic, and is dodge only used on humans or it can be used on animal's fur too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

getty In reply to Espeon4ever [2008-10-22 09:58:16 +0000 UTC]

It depends on your artistic sensibility, so I can't really tell you if. Anyway thanks.

can dodge be used on a separate layer? I meant, using dodge without grouping.

Awesome tutorial, and easy to understand. ^^ But, the grouping doesn't work for me. D:

I'm using Photoshop CS3. Do you know if there's anything I might have missed or if I need to do something else?

getty In reply to Sphirya [2008-10-01 10:30:59 +0000 UTC]

Use Ctrl-Alt-G instead of Ctrl-G. The name of the function has been changed to "Create clipping mask" as well.

Hello there and thanks for this awsome tutorial! I'm having a bit of a problem though I scan my pictures into my computer I don't use a tablet or anything like that. when i scan it it also of course picks up the color of the paper. when i put it into photoshop i cant color the line art without getting everything else messy. when i go to select->color and then select it and delete it it looks fine. but then when i go to select things with the wand tool i get a bunch of pesky translucent pixels... any advice? thanks in advanced~
