Description
This was a goodwill commission that I did on behalf a friend who had some outstanding medical bills. The client wanted a depiction of his dwarf character, who wields a rifle with an axe bayonet attached to it. Part of the character concept was that his attire was that of a Roman legionary soldier.Since the weapon is such a unique one concept-wise, I wanted to put a lot of emphasis on it through composition and value placement.

The gun-axe (especially the flintlock variety) have been created before in real life. However, most combination weapons were not practical or cost-effective in actual combat compared to dedicated ranged and melee weapons, hence rarely produced.
Nevertheless, there is nothing wrong with taking some creative liberties.

Pencil, then sealed that with acrylic matte medium before painting.

I must have that gun. Square Enix could learn much from this character. Screw gun swords, rifle axes are ten times cooler (if gun swords had a cool level of 1 instead of 0).
Dude, you should do more acrylic. This looks great.

Good work with the pose (the hand must've been tricky). I like the colors you have chosen. I just feel that you have applied the paint rather thinly (as though you were painting with watercolor).

Yeah, I guess I'm still in "watercolour mode", so to speak.

The BlunderAxe? My god its GENIOUS!
Also, this piece looks really impressive! The colouring and shading a la dwarf are incredible, and you certainly have put a lot of focus into the weapon - it certainly stands out and it very well done
I'll admit that I think that the lighting could be improved slightly on the dwarfs back, as he ends up as the same shade as the BG (or make a slightly darker/lighter/whatever BG) but then again you might have been aiming for that effect, in which case ignore this little bit
But overall I'd say it is a marvellous piece. Very well done. VERY well done indeed (not that I need to tell you, I am but a novice, and you are... well... hella lot better than I )

Noble of you to do that, bro. If I thought anyone would bought my crap I'd have done the same.
Always get a kick out of your style, your creations never disappoint. The intensity on his face and tension in his body are well illustrated. We are left to imagine the horrors that have him in this state. Love a painting that make's you use your own imagination. Well done, as always.

Good work matey, again, I'd like you to ramp up the contrast. Maybe for your next one you could add a more direct light source. That would help I think

4 hours from when I sealed the pencil lines to the board to when I finished. Acrylics dry quickly, meaning I can layer colours quickly.

I like your friends' dwarf concept; and you excecuted it nicely in this painting. I especially like the axe bayonet, it's an unusual idea (for me anyway; I don't see that kind of thing often).
