Description People occasionally ask me how I got as good as I am. Although I'm far from the best fan-artist out there, I thought I'd make this helpful guide to help people learn the process of constructing a cartoon character out of simple shapes. Also, this joke is so very old.

I know it was meant as a joke but... that's basically how I do it. I don't bother with stick limbs or spines for ponies anymore.

You just made me realise why ponies are so popular on dA (apart from whole huge MLP fandom). You can construct like half of character just with circles and ovals.

When I do sketches, it's more of odd blobs connected with lines, and everything sort of appears from there. XD And even if this is an old joke, me lovies it!

Similar to Kliban's step-by-step instructions on how to draw a cat. Kliban, of course, got more & more crude & insulting with each book, and , if the Bible is true, he had to answer to God for all the insults and such he dumped on Jesus.

I normally draw 3 circles then just draw how i feel like. but i trying to keep the legs and body about the size of the head diameter. I did a speed drawing about a week ago [link]

Fox-E [2012-01-10 11:39:37 +0000 UTC]

You know, it's easy to take this as a joke, or arrogance, or haughtiness or so on and so forth, but it just occurred to me that it's actually a really good point.

It's so easy for me to sit here and think and plan and draw and redraw stuff over and over and over again forever, which honestly kind of ruins the fun of it, so I just tried literally drawing only stickponies, then simply drawing the rest of the damn horse, and (probably unsurprisingly) it worked!

I mean I know it sounds arrogant and all, but it's like...do a quick sketch, be it with circles, guides, gestures, what have you, then just fill in the rest of it! Don't even need to OCD over quality or anything, just ride your skills and experience along to the completion of the drawing.

Let it happen, I guess is one way of putting it. It's really hard not to sound like a bad pseudo–intellectual, but I think it boils down to too much thinking, not enough doing.

That's how I did my first drawings ever, and they turned out stupendously, so it's interesting that I'd forget that (or not even be aware of it in the first place) until like half a year later.

Anyway, thanks GM. Intentionally or unintentionally, you just helped me learn a MAJOUR lesson in art.

Gotta love this joke, no matter how old it gets... I think it's funny that a lot of people work with geometry this way. Maybe I'm just shit or something, but I've always practiced a work of flow called "just f*cking wing it".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GiantMosquito In reply to BambooDew [2012-01-10 11:39:02 +0000 UTC]

That shows in your work. You're pretty good though, and I think it'd make you better. Give it an honest try: Once you get the hang of it, constructing objects and figures out of simple, perspective-correct shapes first should lend a more solid, three-dimensional character to your pieces.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BambooDew In reply to GiantMosquito [2012-01-10 12:38:24 +0000 UTC]

I'll try to implement it a bit more, but so far, my results usually end up better when I just start sketching without any geometrical shapes and then erase and improve upon that initial sketch

Most of them just go to step two, in my experience. The ones that actually have step one are slightly useful.
