Description This was taken during my reserve duty in Gaza, 2004.

The man in the photo is an officer in my unit, called Ofer.
Two hours after this was taken we were ambushed by Palestinians forces and if it wasn't for Ofer resourcefulness, this photo would have been the last I had ever taken.
We all got out safe, while the Palestinians retreat after a while.

This photo was shot through Night vision.

The night vision gives it a very dark, sinister feel. Ofer in the foreground and the truck in the background is very iconic.
Glad everyone made it out of there.

lovely shot.... and i am so glad tht u survived

though war is the most disgusting thing that man has ever created... the same war brings out amazing leadership qualities in men who lead their soldiers into combat.

Such officers appear to be the most respected and revered by their units. isnt it?

I often disagree with people that war is unnecessary. Sometimes war is necessary. sometimes we need to fight against forces that are evil. Wt i do support is peace with all countries and all religions

I do hope someday our leaders realise that war-mongering in the name of religion and past grudges will take us to our doom.

Officers in reserve duty are just like regular soldier, only they lead the unit in combat situations. I myself am a commander in reserve duty

War should be a last resaurt, after all have been tried.
I think in Israel situation not all have been tried, but the other side need to try too.
It's difficult to achive peace when the both sides aren't willing to give up war.

I pray for better.

Thanx

I love this! The perspective is wonderful! Almost like he's towering over the land he watches. The night-vision creates a great effect that I can't really describe. I guess it's just the stillness of night brought out... I hope you know what I mean And thank goodness you're still here, or we wouldn't have your amazing photograps

Take care my friend!

The intensity in this pic is weighted down by its story. It's an insight to another culture that many aren't aware of and think it doesn't effect their lives. This picture is incredible in it makes you wonder. It makes you wish. All five of my uncles where in the military and survived. Great job! Glad you lived

I'm against any kind of war, and I'm sure that it was your duty. Anyway, I think that this siege isn't necessary, never has been necessary. They want to live peaceful too, not frightened like nowadays. Just have nothing to loose and defend the few things they still own. Jewish people should have forgotten the past. Palestinians don't deserve the same suffering.

I have no intesion of making this photo a political argument.
Who is right and who is wrong has nothing to do with the photo.

I wish for peace with all my heart, and I wish everybody will feel the same.

i love the ways he stand, altho i think war is horrible, just the idea of groups of human beings having to kill each other for no reason (not that having a reason would be less stupid) makes me deeply sad,

this image made me see u difrently, i mean we never think that some guy could have been throught war, and then all the marks that keep mostly inside a head:traumas, etc..

well, it seems you found a great direction to yours.. ART!!

War is stupid but so is terror, holocaust and rape. I'm sorry to say the uman race does it all.
Each one of us defines what he is not by the world he lives in (that you can't choose), but by the way you live.
I live in peace, but regretfully I'm at war. I wish for better days.

Thank you!

(and your description adds meaning and hits the spectator).

Getting really cold reading this...
I'm so glad you still are alive

If I could do a wish right now, or in the near future, I'd wish for all those innocent citizens on both sides, who dont support violence in any way, that one day there will be peace in the area where you live...
and not only in your area, but everywhere on earth...

*yup, I know... sometimes I really am a dreamer*

Too many families, villages, suns, daughters, fathers, mothers allready died as well on the Israeli as on the Palestine side...

And I can understand from each side in the conflict that persons who lost loved ones due to the other party that they kinda dont really care about the losses on the other side and that they wanna take revenge... and I think if I would have been born there, I would be the same... but maybe this way it is an ending circle... of course I'm easy to talk... I didnt loose family in there... I still think though it's so sad to see human beings fighting and killing eachother... They say we are the most developed 'animal' on earth... we are thinking about what we are doing... we are aware of ethics...
I'm vegetarian because I'm not even able to let another animal die, just because I would get food, In my opinion I can as well eat plants if I survive on that too... and I am wondering what would bring me to killing other people... on the other hand... maybe I would not need that much to do so... you know the movie 'das experiment' ? This movie made me really quiet, impressed and also afraid... it was an experiment... random people selected for it... some of the people got the function of guards, some of the people got the role of prisoner... it was horrible if you see what happens when you give just normal random people from the street different power positions without control...

ok, in fact I just wanted to say that I'm happy that you are still here with us and I'm showing up with a whole story again... If I see something like this or read somthing like this, my thoughts always go around and around in my head... I think you also must feel quite powerless that you cant change anything about things happening in your country, 'cause even I living here feel powerless each time I read about the conflict.

When will the human race finally see that violence only breeds violence? And that everyone is equal?

Take care of yourself!
Tineke
