Description
i made this model for a international 3d competition, sponsored by Boxx workstations, (hence the name).the objective of the competition was to create a mining dorid, that is a self guided robot that has 3 operating modes, mine, flight and attack mode.
this model was done in 3d max, and the textures were done in photoshop.
i have spent allot of time and though in to this piece, and over all i like it very much ,
i planned this droid so that it will be a mass production, very crude, massive, like a catapillar, that will have no problem drilling ,and mining in the harshest enviorments, even his head and sensors were planned to take a beating and still function.
hope you guys like it

I like desigh of this robot. But, what for two miniguns are necessary for the miner?

well, it was a part of a competition,
the brief required the robot to have defense mechanisms,
if it was up for me, i would not have put these guns on the robot
so i agree with you
but it was done a long time ago,
thanks for the comment, cheers

Lol, didn't know miners had to fight and attack
Seriously though, this model and it's textures are great! This robot looks bad ass, I love the different modes you gave it, very creative!

Go to Pixar and demand that they let you design for them. If they don't, I will beat their brains out with a lead pole, because obviously aren't using them if they don't hire you.
.....Sorry, I'm a mite overzealous.

well if it was internatinal 6ht or 7th is a good place, i'm sure this experience will help you out the next time, and you'll get a better place.... a boxx computer... uhm, sounds like it wasn't that cool, or was it?

oh it was cool , the computer wasnt just any computer.. it was one of the most powerfull pieces you money could have bout at the time...
the experience is acutaly the only thing i gained.. and it was worth it.. because the next one i make will be better.. you know... .

Definitely deserves a daily deviation. Its so nicely designed and functional. Where do you learn to do this kind of modelling, Id like to learn!
Great work. Keep it going.

i respect effort. no matter how completely awesome the design may be, i respect effort. no matter how well done the textures and details are done, i respect effort. no matter how freakin awesome the transformations look (especially since they work), i respect effort. that's why this is a fav in the highest sense of the word. reallly, really awesome

fantastic work, and a well deserved DD. Do you think you could make a short movie of how it transforms? I'm sure it would look awesome in motion!

i tried to make the movie, the animation is ready by the way .. but my comptuer is too weak to pull it off , beacuse this model is very high ploy...
maybe one day...

mm, how much power would you need then?
I've only used LW7 for 3D animation. Problem is, ther version I got is only for macOS9, and I'm running OSX, so I had to open it in classic mode (OS9, basically) but it doesn't seem to share RAM that well. I've only animated a few basic things really, nothing too detailed.
I either need to upgrade LW to 8 (or wait for 9) or upgrade my RAM...or probably both.
ANyway, it would be great to see your creation in motion. I'll look out for it if you ever do get it work

well, im actually using a PC and not a Mac.. and the problem is my hardware is just not suitable to handle that enormous complexity of a model..
if you are using MAC i dont think that you will be able to get out the most out of your lightwave..

dtownley1 In reply to gizmoaseth [2005-10-19 10:03:36 +0000 UTC]
yeah, I think it's one of the few things PC's are good for, high-end 3D work. Upgrade it to a ludicrous speed, and you can sit back and relax
But I'm not doing anything as complex as your work right now anyway. If I had a version for OSX the increase in performance would be clearly noticeable. Still, a G5 would be nice *sigh*
I hear that LW9 is going to operate very differently though, with improved subpatching, completely new texturing abilities, and a much more forgiving modeling system. It's looking very interesting. I have no idea when it will come out though, or even if it's already out.

This got a Daily Deviantion award a couple of months ago... doesn't make sense for it to have one again.
Just wondering what the deal is.
It is a great 3D design none the less.
