Description Here's the final page of the first issue! What does Albion's loss mean in the grand scheme when Eggman has the Genesis Wave up his sleeve? Yes, I'm still keeping that master plan in the comic, only things may play out differently this time... Do you readers expect to see major changes to Mobius? Will Sonic team up with Mega Man again? How will Mecha Sally factor into this? I've also enabled the "Request Critique" function for this page if you want to review the issue as a whole. I'd love to know what you think.

CREATOR'S NOTES:
So now that the first issue is complete, let me give you some general notes. First, let me thank all of you who have stuck with the comic so far. While it took months to draw, I wrote this issue in only one day. I was pumped for this project and had the basic layout already planned in my head. The purpose of this issue was to introduce Team Fighters and the echidnas while wrapping up Endangered Species. Although ES was originally planned as a four-issue story, I disapproved of the concept to begin with. To me it just seemed like another unnecessary obstacle in Sonic's mission to retrieve Sally and I wanted to get it out of the way as quickly as possible. So while 19 pages might seem a bit short to liberate Albion, it's only because I was eager to steer the story back on track and move forward on the main quest. If you prefer a longer redaction of Endangered Species, Archie Sonic Online are currently working on an extended cut. Having said that, there's plenty still to do in Albion, and Knuckles has his part to play yet...

I've had a blast making Sonic Retold so far. I feel like I'm at my best when drawing this comic and my enthusiasm for more pages is strong. Production on the second issue is currently underway, but the truth is that things have been slow for one simple reason: I'm short on cash. Low funds means that I spend more time making a hard living than drawing the comic, which really bums me out. However, you can change that. I set up a Patreon page for readers who want to support this comic and expedite its development.

THE MORE PLEDGES I RECEIVE ON PATREON, THE SOONER I WILL BE ABLE TO RELEASE THE NEXT ISSUE!
I really want to get Sonic Retold #2 out as soon as possible, but with my low income it will be months before that happens. However, I want to give a major shout-out to LundenOtter for committing a whopping $100 a month to my Patreon - far in excessive of the highest reward tier! I can't thank him enough for that and it will help shorten the interval between issues. I hope others will consider donating; there are plenty of rewards on offer if you do, including writing an Off-Panel strip at the end of each issue! So with that said, thanks for reading Sonic Retold, and I hope you stick around while I work on the next part. Let's do it to it!

Hey I have an idea
You could use the Furious 7 poster as the cover for the next issue replacing the fast and furious crew with the freedom fighters.
It's just a suggestion if you don't use it I won't be angry.
Great job on the comic.

Seems Lien-da didn't realize the full scope of what she was getting herself into, and what Eggman planned.
I don't have a full critique for you on this one, but I will say that Eggy's got a really dramatic, diabolical moment here, but his pose seems to be lacking the energy of motion or movement to really drive home the impact.  Though Lien-da's face registers a decent amount of shock and horror, and the ominous Sally in the foreground is a nice touch.

Go Mecha Sally.

Ironically, if Eggman created a world of robians, I wonder if he'd be a loving god to his metal worshippers having gotten what he wanted.

This first issue is extremely well done. Keep in mind that I'm someone who hasn't really followed the comics in general (and given the uncertain fate of the actual series it's probably for sadly good reason at this point), but I'm absolutely thrilled with what you've done so far. I can't promise being able to support you on Patreon, but I absolutely will if I can. Amazing job on this whole thing.

All I can say is oh... my... God. This is too amazing for words. The art, the construction, everything is just beautifully handed out. I see no faults whatsoever; it generally looks like an Archie comic. This is what should have happened. The time and effort you put into this is ASTOUNDING. You honestly should work for Archie (but I guess you kinda don't want to since of how they are now).

I wish I could support you with everything, but sadly I'm quiet poor. Otherwise I would have given you like so much money ;-; You deserve all this support!

Well, I'm working on a critique, but those things are hard since they take an intense amount of analysis (and I don't always have the brain power for it), so it might take a while. As a regular comment, this is a nice place to end the issue. One conflict resolved (for the most part) and a nice lead-up to the next issue that dangles the possibilities in front of us without revealing too much.

You're seriously going to kill all the curiosity in me if you really go through with the Megaman crossover. I doubt you will (I suspect you like taunting us), but my secret hope is that the threat of using the Genesis Wave is as far as this will go. If Remington comes out of nowhere and does a little kamikaze act to prevent it from taking place, I will definitely cheer.

A minor note I'd like to bring up just because I've never actually seen anyone deal with the idea... If Bunnie gets Legionized (which I don't think would have happened for reasons I will leave out for now) are you going to use her original design? Seems a waste... I mean, why in the world would the writers make her all-flesh only to turn around and put her exactly back the way she was before? Not that you would have to go by anything they would or wouldn't do, but it feels self-defeating to reuse the old design. Not like I'm trying to be weird or anything, but if I was her, I'd definitely request that any machinery stay away from my womanly parts. I always wondered how she and Antoine fulfilled their marital duties if she was physically incapable of certain activities.

glitcher In reply to JanikaCheetah [2017-03-07 00:42:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the feedback, JanikaCheetah. I can certainly sympathize with the notion that returning Bunnie to her previous form seems a little tail-backwards in light of the new lease on life she gained in Sonic #232. To tell you the truth, I'm currently batting around ideas for Bunnie and Antoine and the script is not yet complete, so their future is still nebulous. I got the sense from the comics that Bunnie might seek Uncle Beauregard's help to regain her bionics - something I explored in a previous illustration - but whether or not it pans out that way in Sonic Retold is another matter. I need to consider what's best for Bunnie, her relationship with Antoine, and the connection to the overall story before deciding on her fate.

And don't worry, you won't be disappointed by the inclusion of the Genesis Wave. Trust me.

JanikaCheetah In reply to glitcher [2017-03-09 15:13:32 +0000 UTC]

One other thing... I really got no sense of how many Legionnaires escaped. We only saw Lien-Da leave in her shuttle, though she instructed Gae-Na to get out too. And how do the Albion echidnas intend to keep a bunch of captives who have possibly dangerous cybernetic parts? Can't exactly keep them imprisoned forever.

(I don't know why you featured my comment. It wasn't even very good.)

glitcher In reply to JanikaCheetah [2017-03-10 12:23:57 +0000 UTC]

I featured your comment because I appreciate the fact that not only do you express your opinion on the current pages, but you share your thoughts on how you anticipate the rest of the story will play out. It's feedback like this that tells me the comic is stirring your imagination, which is the best kind of compliment I can receive. As for Lien-Da's escape, maybe I could have added a few more shuttles fleeing the scene, but it's worth noting that Lien-Da ordered Gae-Na to escape earlier, and Lien-Da was delayed by her confrontation with Sonic, so she would have been one of the last to leave Albion. As for the captive Legionnaires, that will be explored in next issue as well as further along in the story. There is much work to do in Albion yet.

I look forward to seeing more of this, this is truly exciting.

OK, so you are doing this in "issue" format. I thought you were going to do every story line without breaks. Glad to know this one isn't finished yet. I would've been like "where's the rest of it?". So far, I think this is a good continuation. However, the whole death of Komi-Ko thing kinda bothers me. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind having characters being killed off in a comic. But the gruesome way in which it was done seems a bit too dark in matching the tone of the original comic. Obviously, I'm ok with your continuation ignoring the old mandates placed on the original because they were mainly pointless and hampering towards good-storytelling. Let me put it this way. The Sonic comic, while enjoyed by people of all ages, was mainly made for the younger crowd. Would you want your kid reading a comic with something that dark in it, especially when it doesn't seem to mash up with the rest of it. Just saying, you might want to watch how dark you make this thing. Either way, I look forward to your future writing.

Definitely a shocker. I think there might have been a backlash from horrified readers (and probably their parents, in the case of the younger audience) that resulted in the Archie team deciding not to go such a graphic, sickening route anymore.

A lot of readers mentioned how dark that scene was. I believe a comic can display an edgier tone while remaining appropriate for all ages. You'll notice that I've refrained from including any profanity, graphic violence or other adult themes, which is in keeping with the suitability of the comics. Legionization is an established concept, and we've seen this sort of techno-organic surgery in previous issues, such as Bunnie's assimilation in Sonic #152. If the scene appears dark here, it's only because Sonic comics have lost their grit today. I feel like a poignant death scene is an effective way of showing how a comic can be mature without being unfit for young readers.

zakfett92 In reply to glitcher [2017-03-07 05:29:22 +0000 UTC]

I understand what you're saying. Like I said, I'm OK with characters getting killed off. Still, this seems a bit off to me for a few reasons. For one thing, it doesn't seem like we got to know Komi-Ko well enough. I can probably count her number of appearances on one finger, most of which were non-speaking. To make people feel more sadness for her loss, it might have made sense to have Remington find her alive and then, during a counterattack by Eggman's forces, she gets killed in the crossfire. That would've given us an emotional death scene without the disturbing imagery of what you wrote. Also, the circumstances of her death don't seem to hold up. Eggman already had perfectly good legionization techniques. Why would he change them? And why would they forcefully do it on her? From what I remember, there were a fair number of minions who would've volunteered for it. And why would they keep her conscious during the operation? That's pretty much asking for it to go wrong right there. It looks like they did the operation with the direct intent of harming the patient; essentially medical torture. In spite of the things she's done, I can't imagine Lien-Da doing something like this against someone who she didn't feel had personally wronged her. I could see her wanting to perform such an operation on Knuckles or Julie-Su or even Remington, but not some random echidna woman she probably didn't even know. Above all, I still can't conceive that, even at their darkest, Archie Comics would've put something like this in. It feels too much like you killed off a character just to get a rise out of the audience. Your comic is essentially meant to be a continuation of theirs before the reboot, without the mandates. That being said, you need to ask yourself something when writing this thing: even if SEGA was okay with it, is this something Archie Comics would do? Still, if there's too much backlash against it, I suppose you can always bring her back. Characters that die in comics don't necessarily stay that way. In this case it would be easy. You could just write that she hadn't really died, but that her consciousness had gone into a dormant state due to the shock. Having dark moments in a story can do well for development, dark for darkness' sake can be detrimental. Anyway, this is just how I see it. I still think you're doing a good job for the most part, and look forward to seeing future issues. I just hope you don't plan to kill off characters left and right.

glitcher In reply to zakfett92 [2017-03-07 10:32:00 +0000 UTC]

Fair points. I would compare Komi-Ko's death to that of Théodred in The Lord of the Rings. He's a character who was already a casualty of war upon introduction, but the emotion of his death is less about Théodred himself and more about the effect it has on his loved ones. That's what I'm going for here. Even if you don't remember Komi-Ko, you can clearly see how distraught Remington is over her loss and feel more sympathy for him in this scene. Besides, I don't see how featuring Komi-Ko getting shot to death is less disturbing than finding her already dead. Wouldn't that be even darker?

Concerning the surgery itself, I picture that extensive mechanical prosthetics would be similar to how Logan became Weapon X. In the comics, he wasn't fully sedated because the surgeons needed to map the neural activity from the brain to the claws. In Komi-Ko's case, readers assume that the screams were heard during the operation itself, but it could also have happened during brief revivals where the surgeons needed to test the integrity of the nervous system. This probably led to cardiac arrest. I wouldn't underestimate Lien-Da's involvement in it either. Any woman capable or murdering her own father wouldn't balk at experimenting on a stranger - especially if she thought it would provide a method for more extensive Legionization, which is what I wanted to convey here.

At the end of the day, Komi-Ko is gone. I'm not going to cheapen her death with a miraculous return, because I'm more concerned about how Remington will move forward from here. If you feel like I'm treading where Archie dare not, I'll take that as a compliment. It's a surefire sign that I'm not constrained by the sanitized tone of the comics and can feature poignant scenes that are lacking in today's issues. It may not be what Archie does, but I believe this is what Archie needs.
