A very special page, this. Not part of the storyboard, it was improvised on the day and inspired by Flordeoro's concern for Sally.
A big reason why Sonic's chase to retrieve Sally was so stale in Archie's comic is because of how poorly it expressed Sonic's emotional state in this ordeal. Issue #236 is where things fell apart. By then, Sonic seems to have accepted Sally's transformation and is joking about while trying to subdue her. It was very tone-deaf and demeaning to how anxious readers must feel for them. It was sad to see Archie lose focus on how Sally's fate affects Sonic. I'm not suggesting that the comics needed to be all angsty and melodramatic, but they needed to maintain a sense of Sonic's anxiety underneath his cocky veneer.
While I was planning to address this topic later, Flordeoro's comments reminded me that I was in danger of falling into the same trap as Archie by ignoring Sonic's feelings for too long. After Lien-Da's taunting in the last issue, Sally must always be on his mind... and in his dreams. I believe this page illustrates how worried Sonic must be for Sally and how much he misses her. It's the emotional heft the story needed.
So barring an annotation on the page, do you recognize which issue Sonic's flashback is from?

Well damn poor sonic seems he is having a hard time right now but its not going to get any easy from hear that is for sure.
As for the joking about while trying to subdue her.
I say it as one thing and this is just me if he shows worry and all that while fighting her Mecha Sally could use and and all feeling that Sonic has for her on him which is something I am really shocked never happened, heck I remember that Mecha Sally used this on Amy saying to her "If you destory me then you can be with Sonic." So I think he was jocking so the weakness of him losing her would not be affected in his battles with her, but that may just be me and I could be over thinking it all.
So Mecha Sally knows about her friends which I was shocked was never used in the comic really.

I don't think Sonic's jovial nature in Archie comics is to mask his anxiety. That's too rich for the frustrating writing during that arc. 
Anyway, what do you mean "Mecha Sally knows about her friends which I was shocked was never used in the comic really"? You just said she made a personal attack against Amy.

Yeah I noticed it as well maybe it was wishful thinking that the writer would try and hide this pain that Sonic was in when he had to fight Sally, I mean its the one he loves after all.
What I mean is she will know just how to push them in the wrong way like she did with Amy, as it was only used on just her and only her, but its been a big while since I have read them after all but I never remember Mecha Sally using such means on Tails or the others.
Like with Tails mocking him and saying he always got in the way, and the worse could have been with Sonic saying either she never loved him, or something worse.
Like I said it seems just Amy was used to be messed with but none of the others, and as this comic has shown it can get very dark which is a good thing

THIS!^ I totally agree. The fact that Sonic was made generally more shallow (couldn't be sad, cry, etc.) did cheapen the storytelling of that arc. I missed the personal stakes that were shown in Pre-SGW.

I can tell you purposely made Sally's face with the shadow across it, but can you tell me why? Seems to me that it would have been far more emotional if he'd been able to see her eyes. Nice choice on the setting of the nightmare, too. I'm sure he would have jumped in to save her, but it would have been tough all the same.
But mainly seeing how much Sonic cares about her in a non-platonic way is a relief I can't fully find words to describe. Seeing the story moving along is great, but this reminder of their relationship restores that lost sense of urgency in the originals.

Strange, Flordeoro sent me a PM just yesterday saying "good touch to don’t let us see Sally’s eyes, her body language was very... eloquent". Hiding Sally's eyes is not just present in the water, but also in the panel 2 flashback. That was deliberate. It's a motif that serves as a reminder how Sally is still out of Sonic's reach and he can't see the look in her eyes. It conveys a sense of disconnection that accentuates Sonic's loss. The eyes are a window to Sally's true self, and it makes the chance to see them again a more powerful incentive for Sonic to bring her back.

Well, I see the this. (Please correct me if I’m wrong) that we are seeing it’s a Sonic’s nightmare, so we aren’t seeing exactly a “real” Sally, we are seeing Sonic’s feelings and thoughts about her and her situation.
In the flashback, we see than Sonic remember about her and the meaning than she has in his life.
In the 3th panel she looks lost, telling us than Sonic thinks than she is searching someone or something to help her.
in the 5th panel she is simply in danger. She is caught by their enemy telling us than Sonic thinks than she has afraid, and that fact than makes Sonic feeling terror (and we can see it in his face in the 6th panel)
To dont show us her eyes make us (the reader) to try to understand Sallys feelings and thoughts (than really are Sonic’s interpretations about her) by the position of her body, and that make us feel the things than Sonic are feeling
Specially un the 5th panel her afraid it’s so alive... I even can hear her screaming “HELP!” But if I’m understanding the explication than Glitcher give us, it’s important than that sound can’t be heard, because the message it’s than Sonic can’t reach her... neither the sound of her voice, neither her eyes
Well... that’s what I understand...

Well, I had ten whole minutes to write something *dances gleefully* and just decided to give my impression of the page rather than analyzing every single panel. I think I may give up on trying to evaluate artistic value and stick to what I actually know. Stories are my forte.
I agree with all you said except for perhaps the guilt. I don't see anything here that implies he feels he was at fault, but more his distress over Sally in both heartache and anxiety. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've never seen Sonic to be one for blaming himself needlessly.

And you are right, I haven’t arguments to say than Sonic feels guilt... that just a feeling than I receive, basically because in the flashback he is remembering than Sally wants to be at his side, and she was robotiziced working with him...
I used to think than one of the things than Sonic and Sally has in common its the fact than they feels responsable about things than aren’t really their fault, but they feel than they MUST to repair it (he as heroe, she as princess) but again... I really haven’t arguments to support that theory, and the page doesn’t tell us that. Just was an... idea than cross my mind.

Oh, thank you! Liyu's setting is my favorite: medieval fantasy drama. She has so much creativity and imagination, and mixing it into the Sonic franchise just about guarantees a gold winner in my book.
Well, feeling responsible and feeling guilty aren't the same. A person who feels responsible will act quite differently from someone who feels guilty. For instance, Bunnie left Knothole because she felt guilty and useless. If she'd felt only responsible, she probably would have stayed by Antoine's side while he was in the coma.

Yeah Sonic isn't allowed to feel emotions because Sega thinks thats cool? Which is really odd considering Japan gave us the shounen genre and it's a VERY popular trend that the male lead is immensely emotional.

According to artist Ben Bates, had there been no reboot and no Megaman Worlds Collide crossover either, than Issue 250 would've been the story where Sally gets deroboticized.
I must ask, are you going to honor that original plan and have your version of Issue 250 be that story, or is it happening early?

A fair question. Although to be frank, I don't think I've honoured much of anything outlined in Ian Flynn's Lost Hedgehog Tales while writing this story. I don't consider myself terribly well-informed on the background planning and intended course of the comics before things went south, which is why I'm only using what's been canonically depicted in Sonic issues to pursue my own version of events. The goal of Sonic Retold is not to follow the writer's original intentions as closely as possible, but to illustrate my own vision for the continuation of the series. So at this point, there's no telling when Sally will be deroboticized.... if she's deroboticized at all.

I think you can add a little more grin to Robotnik. And I think the square teeth might work a little better but the overall image of him violently abducting her is still terrifying. Red eyes are definitely the best part and having them hidden under his glasses means it's a rare sight (after he goes full on berserk and wants to annihilate everything).

One time I had an idea for a comic cover where it's one of those prize claw machines with Eggman at the controls, and all the plushie prizes are the Freedom Fighters and innocent people.
Life and death for them, little more than an amusing game of choice for him.
